Roster move
To move away from the 13-man pitching staff the Cubs had gone with since the July 8 trade for Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin, the team today recalled slugger Micah Hoffpauir from Triple-A Iowa. Right-handed pitcher Jon Lieber was placed on the 15-day DL with a right foot strain.
The Cubs begin the second half tonight in Houston. Manager Lou Piniella held a workout last night to get the team tuned up after the three-day layoff. The only players excused were the eight invited to the All-Star Game.
