Cubs catcher Geovany Soto was the August recipient of the National League Rookie of the Month Award presented by Gillette. In 24 games, Soto hit .355 (27-76) with five doubles, three home runs and one triple, while driving in 21 and scoring 17 times. The 25-year-old also had a 1.010 on-base plus slugging percentage during August.
Soto beat out three other rookies for the honor, including fellow Cub Jeff Samardzija, who posted a 1-0 record with a perfect 0.00 ERA, while striking out 13 in 14.1 IP.
In addition to presenting the award, Gillette will also donate $5,000 in the name of Soto to one of the Cubs’ official charities. Fans get a 20 percent say in all Gillette Rookie of the Month voting at www.mlb.com/gillette
