Cubs Caravan rolls
The 2009 Cubs Caravan officially got underway yesterday, and Vine Line staff photographer Steve Green was on hand to document some of the events.
Two charters loaded with Cubs coaches, players and front office brass traveled to several schools and hospitals around Illinois and Chicagoland. It all kicked off with a nice luncheon at Harry Caray’s Restuarant where the media was also on hand, seen interviewing left-hander Sean Marshall (right).
Along with most of the returning team, a couple of newcomers were seen at the luncheon, right-handed reliever Kevin Gregg and outfielder Joey Gathright.
Gregg commented that he was excited to see so much energy about baseball in the winter–a welcomed change and a first for him compared to other teams for which he’s played. Gathright told the media he was excited to get started on the season already. Playing at Wrigley Field made him even more amped up for the season to start.
At the various stops, players read some of their favorite kids books. Jeff Samardzija (below) read “Max’s Dragon”, by Kate Banks, for the Spotlight on Reading program.
But before that, tonight the third annual Len & Bob Bash happens at the House of Blues. The lead guitarist from Rage Against the Machine, Tom Morello, will be performing.
NOTE: The Springfield trip was cancelled because the schools that were to be visited were closed due to the sub-zero temperatures.
