Being a lifelong Cubs fan, I was in Texas when Fergie was with the Rangers, so I went to watch him. It was a rainy day with the Rangers leading 1-0 into the top of the 5th inning. It was obvious that the game was going to be called soon when Fergie took the mound. He through 9 pitches for three strike outs and the game was called when he left the mound. That’s the kind of control he had. He should have been in the hall on the first ballet but we all know that Cubs players have to wait longer to get in if they get in at all.
There are a lot of people who would agree with you. But just knowing the discussions we’ve had over the years about retiring Fergie’s number, we just had to wait until Maddux was done. I think it turned out for the best.
