Vine Line EXTRA: October 2010 sneak peek

01_VL_1010.p1.pdf.r72.jpgThe October issue of Vine Line, being mailed out right now, is an issue you won’t want to miss.

Editor Michael Huang sat down with general manager Jim Hendry to ask him the questions fans are clammoring to know: What moves does Hendry plan to make in order to avoid completely rebuilding? How does he evaluate the progress at the minor-league level? What does he think of Mike Quade’s performance in the manager’s seat?

The story gives a lot of insight into where the Cubs are headed this off-season.

You’ll also find recaps of the Andre Dawson and Billy Williams ceremonies held at Wrigley Field over the past few weeks, including exclusive photography from Stephen Green. And if you’ve ever been interested in knowing how the pros chart pitches from scout’s row, you’ll find a Cubs CrossOver walking through the fundamentals and purpose of logging every pitch a Cubs hurler throws.

Well, you figure the farm system has gotten us pretty much an entire team the last few years –

SP – Carlos Zambrano, Rich Hill, Randy Wells
RP – Carlos Marmol, Sean Marshall, Michael Wuertz, Jeff Samardzija, Angel Guzman, Will Ohman, David Aardsma

C – Geovany Soto, Koyie Hill, Jake Fox
1B – Micah Hoffpauir
2B – Mike Fontenot
3B – Casey McGehee
SS – Starlin Castro, Ryan Theriot
LF – Eric Patterson, Matt Murton
CF – Angel Pagan, Felix Pie
RF – Tyler Colvin
UT – Ronny Cedeno, Darwin Barney, Bobby Scales, Sam Fuld

Now, if Hendry didn’t keep trading guys away for peanuts, the team would be in much better shape. A number of those guys were moved in transactions we got little or nothing in exchange for. Not to mention the horrible contract signings in recent years (Soriano, Marquis, Bradley, Jones), overpaying guys well past their prime, or when they’ve got bad career stats. And trading away or letting go of good starting pitchers like Maddux, Lilly, and Harden, with nothing to show for it but some defensive shortstops (Izturis and DeWitt)?

We’d have a great team if not for the giant weight holding it down and sabotaging it, GM Jim Hendry.
