Cubs claim reliever Carlos Gutierrez

The Cubs claimed right-handed pitcher Carlos Gutierrez off waivers from the Twins Wednesday.

The 26-year-old went 2-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 10 relief appearances last year at Triple-A Rochester, striking out 20 and walking three in 16 innings pitched. He had surgery on his shoulder in July and has since resumed throwing.

The 2008 first-round pick of the Twins has gone 15-20 in his minor league career with a 4.11 ERA in 136 appearances.

Catcher Anthony Recker was designated for assignment to make room. He was acquired from Baltimore on Aug. 27 and hit .167 (3-for-18) with one home run and four RBI in nine games with Chicago.
