Cubs right-hander Jeff Samardzija was named the NL Co-Player of the Week, along with Marlins rookie Jose Fernandez, for his two dominating starts against Washington and San Diego. The Shark posted an impressive 1.59 ERA, allowing three earned runs over 17.0 innings pitched, and picked up 12 strikeouts versus only two walks.
On Monday, Samardzija tossed his second complete game of the season, pitching 9.0 innings of one-run ball in an 11-1 drubbing of the Nationals at Wrigley Field. On Saturday, the 28-year-old held the Padres to two earned runs over 8.0 innings in a 3-2 victory at PETCO Park.
The last Cub to win the award was Ryan Dempster, who shared the honor with the Diamondbacks Jason Kubel for the week of June 4-10, 2012.
