Cubs Minor League Recap: 4/28/15

Iowa claimed both games of its doubleheade while hot bats carried Tennessee to a win Tuesday. Meanwhile, Myrtle Beach continued its recent struggles and South Bend had a bad inning in a loss. Here are some notes from yesterday’s Cubs minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (9-10)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Third Place (-5.5)

GM 1: Iowa cruised past Colorado Springs in a 7-1 victory.

  • CF Arismendy Alcantara (.182) blasted his first home run and triple of the season, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • SS Jonathan Mota (.342) went 2-for-3, plated two, walked once and scored once.
  • RHP Donn Roach (2.31) tossed his third consecutive quality start, giving up one earned run in 6.0 innings. He has allowed two runs over 18.0 innings in his last three starts.

GM 2: 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.200) crushed his second home run of the day as the I-Cubs topped Colorado Springs, 6-3, to sweep the doubleheader.

  • RF John Andreoli (.244) went 2-for-3, hit two triples and scored twice.
  • 1B Mike Baxter (.381) went 2-for-2, walked twice and scored once.
  • C Rafael Lopez (.225) plated three with the eventual game-winning double (3) in the top of the seventh inning.

Tennessee Smokies (11-6)
Southern League (Double-A)
First Place (+3.0)

Tennessee notched a season-high three homers in a 7-6 victory over Chattanooga.

  • C Kyle Schwarber (.388) went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, three RBI and one run. He has recorded a hit and RBI in his last seven appearances, five of which were multi-hit games.
  • CF Jacob Hannemann (.750) went 3-for-4 in his first game with the Smokies, including a solo homer.
  • RF Bijan Rademacher (.271) went 2-for-4, hit a home run, two RBI and scored twice.
  • C Willson Contreras (.327) and SS Elliot Soto (.273) also had multi-hit games. Soto drove in a run as well.

Myrtle Beach (9-8)
Carolina League (High-A)
T-First Place (–)

Myrtle Beach suffered its fourth straight loss, falling 3-2 at Wilmington in 10 innings.

  • RHP Jen-Ho Tseng (3.14) surrendered just one earned run on three hits in 5.0 innings of work, striking out two.
  • 2B Wes Darvill (.214) hit his second double of the campaign.
  • C Victor Caratini (.200) and LF Mark Zagunis (.231) each picked up an RBI for the Pelicans.
  • RHP James Pugliese (2.45) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and fanning two.

South Bend Cubs (9-10)
Midwest League (Low-A)
T-Fifth Place (-4.0)

South Bend fell 8-5 in the series opener at West Michigan after giving up three runs in the sixth inning.

  • LF Charcer Burks (.328) went 3-for-4, plated one, swiped a base and scored once.
  • CF Rashad Crawford hit his first triple of the season, recorded an RBI and scored once.
  • SS Gleyber Torres (.302) added a run-scoring double and scored a run.
  • 2B Chesny Young (.299) also knocked a double, recorded an RBI and scored once.
