Cubs Minor League Recap: 5/12/15

South Bend’s bats carried the Cubs to a win, while Tennessee split a doubleheader on Tuesday. Iowa came up short against Nashville, and Myrtle Beach was postponed. Here are some notes from yesterday’s Cubs minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (15-17)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Third Place (-7.0)

Iowa dropped the first game of a four-game home series against Nashville, 6-3.

  • 2B Javier Baez (.265) went 2-for-4 and crushed a solo home run in the sixth inning.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.281) went 3-for-4, blasting his third homer of the season in the seventh inning.
  • LF John Andreoli (.293) hit a double, extending his hitting streak to five games (8-for-19/.421).
  • SS Arismendy Alcantara (.235) drove in a run. He has recorded a hit in the last six games.

Tennessee Smokies (17-15)
Southern League (Double-A)
Second Place (-2.0)

Game 1: Tennessee rallied in the eighth inning to top Montgomery, 7-6.

  • RHP Frank Batista (1.53) gave up two earned runs in 5.0 innings, striking out six.
  • C Willson Contreras (.337) went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. He extended his hitting streak to five games (7-for-16/.438).
  • 1B Dan Vogelbach (.352) went 3-for-3, walked once and scored twice.
  • SS Elliot Soto (.300) went 2-for-5 with an RBI double in the eighth inning.
  • DH Kyle Schwarber (.311) blasted his sixth homer and walked once.
  • CF Jacob Hannemann (.180) hit an RBI triple in the eighth inning to give the Smokies the lead.

Game 2: Myrtle Beach gave up 10 runs in the eighth inning, falling to Montgomery, 14-0.

  • RHP Corey Black (3.68) gave up two earned runs and struck out six in 6.0 innings.
  • SS Elliot Soto (.298) and CF Albert Almora (.279) recorded the lone hits for the Smokies.

South Bend Cubs (17-15)
Midwest League (Low-A)
T-Third Place (-3.0)

South Bend knocked five doubles and a triple in a 5-3 victory over Lansing.

  • 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.211) and 2B Jason Vosler (.256) each went 2-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and one run scored.
  • SS Gleyber Torres (.324) went 2-for-3, hit a double, walked once and scored once.
  • CF Rashad Crawford (.288) had a multi-hit game and earned his 14th RBI.
  • RHP Jeremy Null (0.74) collected his fourth win and fourth quality start, giving up one earned run in 6.0 innings and striking out four. He has allowed just three earned runs over 36.2 innings of work this season (six games).
