Cubs Minor League Recap: 5/18/15

Iowa edged out a win, but Tennessee couldn’t get the bats going and South Bend continued its skid on Monday. Myrtle Beach had the day off and will return to action Tuesday. Here are some notes from yesterday’s Cubs minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (19-19)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Second Place (-7.0)

CF Matt Szczur went 4-for-4 with a run scored as the I-Cubs defeated Oklahoma City, 3-2.

  • Szczur (.327) has gone 5-for-7 with a double, two walks, two stolen bases and two runs scored in his first two games back with Iowa.
  • 1B Taylor Davis (.347) went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored. He’s 6-for-7 with five doubles in his last two games.
  • RHP Donn Roach tossed his seventh straight quality start, as he improved to a perfect 5-0 after pitching 6.0 innings and giving up just one earned run Monday. He has posted a 1.40 ERA (7 ER/45.0 IP) in those seven starts.

Tennessee Smokies (21-17)
Southern League (Double-A)
Second Place (-2.0)

Tennessee was blanked for the second straight game, falling 11-0 to visiting Jackson.

  • The Smokies mustered just three hits. DH Willson Contreras recorded the only extra-base hit, going 1-for-4 with a triple.
  • RHP P.J. Francescon (0.57) tossed a scoreless ninth inning. He has allowed just one earned run in 15.2 innings (11 games) this season.

South Bend Cubs (18-20)
Midwest League (Low-A)
Sixth Place (-4.0)

South Bend dropped its fifth game in the last six contests, falling 7-5 at Lansing.

  • C Cael Brockmeyer (.316) collected his fifth three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBI.
  • 1B-C Gioskar Amaya (.214) extended his hitting streak to five games (.333/7-for-21), going 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI.
  •  LF Charcer Burks (.316) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base. He’s hit safely in nine straight games (.293/12-for-41).
  • RF-1B Yasiel Balaguert (.218) went 2-for-3 with a walk.
  • The SB-Cubs collected 11 hits, all singles, in the loss.
