Cubs Minor League Recap: 5/25/15

Myrtle Beach recorded a shutout victory, and Tennessee earned a win in a rain-shortened game Monday, but both Iowa and South Bend couldn’t get it done. Here are some notes from yesterday’s Cubs minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (22-21)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Second Place (-8.0)

Iowa dropped the series opener to Reno, 8-3. The I-Cubs belted two homers in the setback.

  • 1B Taylor Davis (.371) blasted a solo homer in the second inning. It extended his hitting streak to seven games (15-for-28/.536, 11 XBH)
  • RF Rubi Silva (.279) went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in the second inning and a stolen base. He has driven in eight runs in the last four games.
  • CF Arismendy Alcantara (.252) went 3-for-4, swiped a base and scored once, extending his hitting streak to eight games (12-for-34/.352).
  • LF Adron Chambers (.241) went 2-for-4 with two doubles.

Tennessee Smokies (24-21)
Southern League (Double-A)
Second Place (-4.5)

Tennessee took the final game of the five-game series, topping Montgomery, 6-4. The game was called with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning due to rain.

  • DH Willson Contreras (.317) went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and a double. He recorded three RBI and scored twice, extending his hitting streak to six games (9-for-22/.409).
  • LF Jacob Hannemann (.196) went 1-for-3, plated two and walked once.
  • RHP Felix Pena (3.33) tossed his fourth quality start and fanned a season-high nine batters in 6.0 innings.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (27-15)
Carolina League (High-A)
First Place (+5.5)

Myrtle Beach blanked Potomac in the series finale, 3-0. The Pelicans took the four-game series, 3-1.

  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.276) went 2-for-4, knocked a double and plated two. He went 6-for-17 (.352 AVG) with two home runs, a double and four RBI in the series.
  • SS Chesny Young (.366) went 2-for-4 with a double and one run scored.
  • RF Mark Zagunis (.314) went 1-for-4 with an RBI double.
  • RHP Jen-Ho Tseng (4.26) had his first scoreless outing, holding Potomac to just two hits while fanning a season-high six batters in 6.0 innings of work.

South Bend Cubs (20-25)
Midwest League (Low-A)
Seventh Place (-6.0)

South Bend split the four-game series with Bowling Green after suffering a 12-8 loss. Five SB-Cubs had multi-hit games, and the team recorded 15 hits in the loss.

  • SS Gleyber Torres (.340) went 3-for-5, plated two and scored twice.
  • C Cael Brockmeyer (.324) went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in the seventh inning, extending his hitting streak to six games (9-for-22/.409).
  • 3B Jesse Hodges (.240) crushed a solo homer in the second inning.
  • 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.236) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. It marked his third consecutive multi-hit game and extended his hitting streak to four games (7-for-16/.438).
  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.204) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
  • DH Gioskar Amaya (.231) went 3-for-5 and scored once, marking his second three-hit game of the campaign.
