Cubs Minor League Recap: 5/31/15

One big inning boosted Iowa, and Myrtle Beach continued its winning ways Sunday. Tennessee couldn’t get the bats going in a loss while South Bend’s game was suspended in the fourth inning due to rain. It will be continued today, with the regularly scheduled game to follow. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league Cubs action:

Iowa Cubs (25-24)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Second Place (-9.0)

Iowa scored seven runs in the seventh inning to defeat host El Paso, 8-4.

  • RHP Felipe Paulino gave up one earned run over 4.0 innings pitched in the no-decision.
  • CF Matt Szczur (.337) has now hit safely in six straight games (10-for-24), after going 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored yesterday. He finished May with a .364 average (20-for-55) in 16 games.
  • SS Javier Baez (.306) collected his fourth three-hit game, going 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. He batted .314 (33-for-105) with five doubles and five homers in 29 May games.
  • RF Jonathan Mota (.284) went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. He tied a season high with three RBI.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.272), C Taylor Teagarden (.289) and PH Adron Chambers (.245) each collected a multi-hit game and scored a run.

Tennessee Smokies (27-23)
Southern League (Double-A)
Second Place (-3.0)

Tennessee dropped the final game of its five-game homestand against Mobile, falling 5-1.

  • C Kyle Schwarber (.327) collected his fourth straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. He has gone 11-for-22 (.500) in his last six games.
  • RF Billy McKinney (.298) went 2-for-3 and has hit safely in six of his last seven games.
  • RHP Andres Santiago (4.24) allowed just one run on three hits in 4.0 innings of relief.

Myrtle Beach (31-16)
Carolina League (High-A)
First Place (+6.5)

Myrtle Beach won its fifth game in the last six contests, cruising past Potomac, 7-2.

  • RHP Tyler Skulina (4.07) gave up two earned runs in 6.0 innings of work, striking out three to pick up the win.
  • LF Chesny Young (.362) went 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored.
  • 1B Jacob Rogers (.247) went 2-for-4 with a walk, a solo home run and two runs scored.
  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.267) drove in a team-high three runs, going 1-for-4 with a homer.
  • RHP Fernando Cruz (0.00) tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, picking up a save in his first appearance with Myrtle Beach.
