Cubs Minor League Recap: 8/10/15

A few Cubs affiliates were off Monday, but every team that took the field recorded a win. Tennessee edged out a victory while Eugene and Mesa each posted shutouts. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Tennessee Smokies (22-21)
Southern League (Double-A)
Third Place (-6.0)

Tennessee topped Jackson, 6-5, improving to 8-2 in the month of August.

  • DH Billy McKinney (.284) went 2-for-3 with a homer (3), a double (25), two RBI (35), a walk and two runs scored. It marked his third consecutive multi-hit and multi-RBI game.
  • C Willson Contreras (.343) went 2-for-4, plated one (63) and scored once, extending his hitting streak to 14 games (28-for-54/.519) with 17 RBI in that stretch.
  • CF Albert Almora (.264) went 2-for-4, knocked a double (18) and scored once. He has a seven-game hitting streak (.536/15-for-28), including six straight multi-hit games.
  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.338) extended his hitting streak to seven games (10-for-28), going 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI (19), a walk and one run scored.
  • RHP Ryan Williams (2.70) allowed just one hit in 6.0 scoreless frames to pick up the win, striking out five batters.

Eugene Emeralds (7-5)
Northwest League (Short-Season A)
T-Second Place (-1.0)

  • 3B Adonis Paula (.264) went 3-for-4, knocked a double (8), plated one (13), swiped a base and scored once.
  • 2B Frandy Delarosa (.259) went 2-for-5 with a double (13), an RBI (18) and one run scored.
  • CF Donnie Dewees (.241) went 2-for-5 and scored a season-high three runs.
  • SS Andrew Ely (.340) went 1-for-4 with two RBI (4), a walk, a stolen base and three runs scored.
  • RHP Preston Morrison (0.84) earned the win and fanned four batters in 3.0 shutout innings of relief.

Mesa Cubs (7-4)
Arizona Rookie League
First Place (+0.5)

The Mesa Cubs blanked the AZL Padres, 6-0. The Cubs swiped six bases in the victory.

  • DH Robert Garcia (.359) went 3-for-4 with a triple (4) that plated three runs (18), a stolen base (16) and two runs scored.
  • CF Darryl Wilson (.273) went 2-for-4, drove in one run (5), swiped a base (3) and scored once.
  • LF Donnie Cimino (.180) went 2-for-4 and scored once, marking his first multi-hit game.
  • RHP Dylan Cease (2.45) earned his first win, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings of relief, fanning three and walking two batters.
