Cubs Minor League Recap: 7/11/16

Tennessee and Myrtle Beach both picked up wins Monday, while South Bend and Eugene both came out on the losing end. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor-league Cubs action.

Iowa Cubs (41-50)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Third Place (-12.0)

Iowa is off until Thursday for the All-Star Break. 1B Dan Vogelbach and RHP Armando Rivero will represent the Cubs at the Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Tennessee Smokies (9-8)
Southern League (Double-A)
T-Third Place (-1.5)

The Smokies won their second straight one-run game, defeating visiting Chattanooga, 7-6.

  • C Victor Caratini (.293) went 2 for 3 with a go-ahead three-run homer and two runs scored.
  • RF Billy McKinney (.271) and CF Trey Martin (.210) each went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.
  • SS Daniel Lockhart (.250) went 2 for 4 with two runs scored. He has three multi-hit games in his last four contests.
  • RHP Joe Nathan (1 IP) made his seventh relief appearance, tossing a scoreless inning. He has allowed two runs on three hits while walking none in 6.2 innings (2.70 ERA).

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (10-9)
Carolina League (High-A)
First Place (+0.5)

Myrtle Beach claimed its third-straight win with a 5-1 victory over host Wilmington.

  • CF Rashad Crawford (.249) went 2 for 4 with a go-ahead three-run homer, two runs scored and a stolen base (17). He has two hits and two runs scored in each of his last three games.
  • SS Gleyber Torres (.270) added a multi-hit game, going 2 for 5 with a double (18), an RBI (37) and a stolen base (17).
  • 1B David Bote (.296) reached three times, going 1 for 3 with two walks.
  • RHP Pedro Araujo (2.2 IP, H, 4 SO) has yet to allow an earned run in 8.1 innings with Myrtle Beach

South Bend Cubs (13-6)
Midwest League (Single-A)
Second Place (-1.0)

South Bend surrendered 14 hits in a 10-3 setback at home against Bowling Green.

  • 1B Josh Silver (.257) led the way offensively, going 3 for 4 with two runs scored. He has gone 7 for 14 with five runs scored in his last three games.
  • 2B Bryant Flete (.215) added two hits, going 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI (22).
  • 3B Jesse Hodges (.293) extended his hitting streak to five games (.429/9 for 21), going 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored.

Eugene Emeralds (17-8)
Northwest League (Short-Season A)
First Place (+5.0)

The Emeralds collected just four hits in a 7-4 setback vs. Hillsboro, marking their first two-game losing streak of the season.

  • CF D.J. Wilson (.163) reached twice, going 1 for 4 with a double (2), a walk and two RBI (7).
  • C Tyler Payne (.286) and RF Connor Myers (.250) each singled, scored a run and drove in a run.
  • LF Kevonte Mitchell (.203) went 1 for 4 with a double (4), two runs and a steal (6).

Mesa Cubs (8-9)
Arizona Rookie League
Third Place (-2.0)

Mesa had the day off. The Cubs return to action tomorrow at the AZL White Sox.
