Cubs Minor League Report: 7/19/16

Only Mesa was able to pick up a victory Tuesday, while Iowa, Tennessee and South Bend all had the day off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor league Cubs action.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (13-13)
Carolina League (High-A)
Second Place (-0.5)

Myrtle Beach collected 12 hits, all singles, in a 13-7 setback at Winston-Salem.

  • 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.236) went 4 for 4 with a walk, a run scored and two RBI (60). He has hit safely in five straight games (.409/9 for 22) with seven RBI.
  • CF Rashad Crawford (.255) was 3 for 5 with three runs scored, his second three-hit game in three days. He is batting .353 (24 for 68) in 16 July games.
  • 2B David Bote (.314) went 2 for 4 with two runs scored, his third straight multi-hit game.
  • SS Andrew Ely (.188) added a multi-hit game, going 2 for 5.

Eugene Emeralds (22-10)
Northwest League (Short-Season A)
First Place (+6.0)

The Ems could only muster three hits as they lost to Hillsboro, 8-2. Eugene can clinch the first-half South Division title with a win tonight.

  • 1B Chris Pieters (.297) connected for a two-run homer (2) in the first inning. He was 1 for 4 with two RBI (16) and a run scored.
  • RF Robert Garcia (.298) was 1 for 4 with a run scored. He his lone hit was a double (9).
  • 2B Yeiler Peguero (.264) went 1 for 4 with a stolen base (3).
  • LHP Bryan Hudson (3.51 ERA) gave up one earned run in four innings. He has allowed one or fewer earned runs in four of his six starts this season.

Mesa Cubs (13-10)
Arizona Rookie League
T-First Place (–)

The Mesa Cubs put up a three-run eighth inning to top the host AZL Dodgers, 7-6.

  • RHP Jed Carter (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 SO), the 15th round pick from Auburn University-Montgomery, made his professional debut in relief.
  • SS Isaac Paredes (.309) was 4 for 5, drove in a run (11) and scored once. He is 13 for 24 in his last six games.
  • RF Luis Ayala (.345) finished 2 for 5 with a double (3) and two runs scored.
  • 1B Kevin Zamudio (.234) was 1 for 5 with a double (7), two RBI (14) and a run scored.
  • 3B Rafael Mejia (.196) and C Michael Cruz (.234) both tallied a double.
