Cubs Minor League Report: 7/21/16

It was a tough day for Cubs affiliates, as only Eugene was able to secure a win Thursday. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor-league Cubs action.

Iowa Cubs (43-56)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Fourth Place (-13.0)

Iowa out-hit the Bees, 12-10, but fell short in the runs column, losing 5-4 vs. Salt Lake.

  • LF Jorge Soler (.143) went 1 for 4 with a single in his second rehab game.
  • SS Munenori Kawasaki (.279) was 3 for 3 with a walk, his third three-hit game of the season.
  • 2B Logan Watkins (.290) finished 3 for 4 with an RBI (28).
  • DH Tim Federowicz (.330) was 2 for 5 with a run scored.
  • 1B Jeimer Candelario (.310) went 2 for 4 with a double (9) and two runs scored.

Tennessee Smokies (11-15)
Southern League (Double-A)
Fifth Place (-4.5)

The Smokies allowed four runs in the seventh inning and fell 5-3 at home to Mississippi.

  • 3B Gioskar Amaya (.185) was 3 for 4, his first three-hit game with the Smokies.
  • 1B David Freitas (.295) went 2 for 4 with a double (8), two runs scored and an RBI (19). He has four multi-hit games in his last six contests, including three straight two-hit games.
  • RHP Jen-Ho Tseng (3.03 ERA) gave up one unearned run in six innings.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (13-14)
Carolina League (High-A)
Second Place (-0.5)

The Pelicans fell behind 7-1 in the third inning and could not rally back, as they lost 9-4 vs. Wilmington.

  • CF Rashad Crawford (.255) was 1 for 3 with a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base (20). He is batting .352 (25 for 71) with 25 runs scored in 17 July games.
  • 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.236) went 1 for 4 with a two-run homer (13). He has eight RBI in his last three games.
  • RHP Tommy Nance (2 IP, 2 H, 1 SO) tossed two scoreless innings in his first outing with Myrtle Beach.

South Bend Cubs (16-11)
Midwest League (Single-A)
T-Second Place (-1.5)

South Bend collected just five hits, all singles, in a 3-1 setback vs. Burlington.

  • RHP Preston Morrison (2.24 ERA) fired six scoreless innings, striking out six versus just one walk. He has allowed just one earned run in his last six starts (39.2 IP).
  • 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.317) went 1 for 4 with a run scored, his fourth straight game with a hit.

Eugene Emeralds (24-10)
Northwest League (Short-Season A)
First Place (+7.0)

Eugene scored four runs in the first inning and held on for an 8-7 win over Vancouver.

  • 1B Jose Paniagua (.273) finished 3 for 4 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI (9).
  • LF Kevonte Mitchell (.229) went 2 for 5 with a solo homer (2), two runs scored, two RBI (12) and a stolen base (10). He has six RBI in his last six games.
  • CF Connor Myers (.296), 2B Vimael Machin (.400), SS Zack Short (.200) and C Sam Tidaback (.286) all recorded two-hit games.

Mesa Cubs (14-11)
Arizona Rookie League
First Place (+1.0)

Mesa lost in walk-off fashion for the second straight day, allowing two runs in the bottom of the ninth and falling 5-4 at the AZL Indians.

  • RF Ruben Reyes (.254) went 2 for 4 with an RBI (8).
  • RHP Dakota Mekkes (2 IP, 1 H, 4 SO) struck out four batters in two scoreless innings.
  • CF Jose Gonzalez (.099) and C Jhonny Pereda (.264) each collected a hit and scored a run.
