Tune in to the MLB Network this Saturday at 7:15 p.m. CT to see pitchers Andrew Cashner and Blake Parker, and infielders Starlin Castro and Josh Vitters. All four will be playing for the East Division in the Arizona Fall League Rising Stars Game.

And when it comes down to top prospects in the Cubs organization, you can't get much bigger than these four. Vitters and Cashner are the Cubs' 2007 and 2008 first-round draft picks, respectively. At just 19 years old, Castro might just be the Cubs prospect gaining attention the fastest. And Parker is a converted infielder who looked good as a part-time closer in Double and Triple A this season.

Vitters is hitting for a .360 AVG/.385 OBP/.460 SLG line over 12 games in the Arizona Fall League, but he has made it his goal to work on his third-base defense while playing with the game's top minor-leaguers.

"I know my bat will be there," Vitters told Vine Line earlier this year. "I want my defense to be up there with the best of them."

With the system stocked with good infielders, vice president of player personnel Oneri Fleita has been able to slowly move Vitters up the ladder, splitting his time between Class-A Peoria and Daytona this season. But the 20-year-old's natural hitting ability has only drawn rave reviews.

"When you first watch him take batting practice, he can really drive the ball," Peoria manager Marty Pevey told Vine Line. "He has as quick of hands as any young player. I'd say his hands are as quick as Bob Horner back with the Braves when he came out of Arizona State."

The Vine Line blog will have more on Castro, Cashner and Parker later this week.

Five or six photographers stood outside the Captain Morgan Club in the Wrigley Field concourse awaiting the Ricketts arrival to the press conference.

If Quentin Tarantino had captured the moment, it surely would have been in slow motion. The four Ricketts--Peter, Todd, Laura and Tom--did their best "Reservoir Dogs" impersonation walking side by side, looking like a quartet of gunslingers.

They just bought the Chicago Cubs. They should feel confident!

Tom discussed everything from payroll, tickets, the "Triangle" Building, Wrigley Field, naming rights, Lou Piniella....The entire press conference went off without a hitch. Well, almost.

As she started to add to a comment made by Tom, Laura Ricketts' microphone shut down. Being the nice brother that he is, Tom--who was wearing a clip on mic--snuggled up next to his sister, who used the clip-on to finish her statement, to the laughter of the media and ancillary audience. I was standing next to Comcast SportsNet producer Bob Albrecht and I remarked:

"Wouldn't it be great if she planted a nice kiss right on her brother's face right now?"

"I was thinking the exact same thing," Bob said.

Though she didn't, the moment made for a very good photo-op.

The siblings discussed how each had come to be a Cubs fan, despite growing up in Omaha.

All had gone to school in Chicago and found themselves caught up into Cubs mania. Peter, who currently is the only sibling living in Omaha, recalled his college days.

"I came to Chicago in 1982 to attend the University of Chicago," said Peter, who lived above Sports Corner on the corner of Addison and Sheffield. His brother Tom came to live with him. "By 1984, it was hard not to get into the Cubs. I lived with my brother, and he slept overnight in line to get bleacher tickets."

Sister Laura came and stayed with her brothers one summer and got hooked as well.

"I became immersed in the culture of Wrigleyville," Laura said.

After the press conference and an interview immediately following, Tom is whisked away for even more appointments. He still looks relaxed and poised.

"How are you holding up," Cubs President Crane Kenney asks.

"Good. Real good," Tom replies.

"Well, hang in there. It's a marathon." In baseball, no truer words have been spoken

That's probably good considering the Ricketts family have said on numerous occassions that they are in it for the long haul. That's good news.

Hey, Cubs fans! Welcome to the family.

The Ricketts siblings have done just about every sort of media shoot and interview possible.

The weather didn't cooperate with the day, so the press conference was moved into the Captain Morgan Club. Just outside the Club, the Ricketts family poses for photos for Michigan Avenue Magazine. They have been coached well, as Laura Ricketts remarks, and understand what the media requires. But Tom said this morning that if the media relations department does their job, fans won't see the Ricketts in the newspapers. But he is realistic.

"It's hard--you can't have it both ways," he said. "You can't buy the team and become chairman without having a profile."

Tom and his siblings often try to break the tension with jokes and self-effacing humor. The echo of laughter and jokes are a welcome addition to the halls of Wrigley Field. Not that the corporate ownership of the Tribune was bad or difficult, but Tom stressed that he would like to change the culture of the organization to turn to one of a family.

The family's jocularity went a long way to the front office employees and those watching the Ricketts go through a photo shoot out in the rightfield stands.

Tom did draw a stark line in the sand between family ownership and corporate ownership, however.

"There are no other businesses for us to subsidize within the organization and we won't be caught up in quarterly reports," Tom said. "We have only one goal--and that is to win the World Series. We are going to reinvest every dollar into the team, Wrigley Field, and the facilities those people need to make us the best organization in baseball."

As the press conference gets rolling, Tom Ricketts takes the stage with his three siblings. It is notable that during the front office breakfast, as well as the press conference, Tom refuses to use the podium. I asked one of our human resources people where the podium was during breakfast. She replied, "He didn't want one."

Tom is relaxed and informal, staying true to that very down-to-earth attitude. If there is any sort of new attitude on the North Side from this family from Omaha, Neb., to Cubs fans it is:

They are one of you.

The Ricketts family closed the transaction on Tuesday, taking over 95 percent ownership of the Chicago Cubs. Today, they met with the front office before their 11:00 press conference.

If you've heard the Ricketts family is down-to-earth and that Tom met his wife in the bleachers, it's all true. Tom and siblings Peter, Todd and Laura have a very fan-friendly way about them. They could be your neighbor.

Perhaps the only thing that might have ruffled their unflappable personalities was the all of the media attention. Tom said he was looking forward to this day being done. But being the eighth ownership group in Cubs history might merit that attention and the family is keenly aware of it.

But it is an exciting time today. The front office met for breakfast and heard from their Chairman for the first time--at least for most of the employees not involved intimately with the transaction.

One message Tom hoped to get across is that after today, the work to establish the Cubs as the best organization in baseball begins. A phrase I caught summed it all up:

"It starts now," he said.

And in fact, so does the press conference!

After all, the man the Cubs welcomed as their new hitting coach at a press conference about an hour ago has resurrected the careers of many hitters or at the very least, helped some correct the sins in their swings.

"I'm a teacher first, a coach second," said the former Texas Rangers hitting coach. "I love to see talent in players and watch them get better....My ability to build rapport with players is good and my communications skills are strong.

"But there has to be a mutual trust between the coach and the player," Jaramillo added. "You still have to win them over. And when you tell a hitter something, it better work because it's all about results." photo by Kelsey Peters

And that is exactly what the Cubs are hoping Jaramillo will be able to do with a Cubs offense that finished 26th in the majors in 2009, scoring just 707 runs and hitting just .255.

"I think everyone in the game, from players to coaches to managers, put this man at the top of the field," said Cubs general manager Jim Hendry. "There's no higher standard for a major-league hitting coach than the one he set the last 15 years.

"It couldn't have come at a better time; we know we had some offensive deficiencies with some outstanding players some of which Rudy has been fortunate to work with in the past," Hendry added. "We're excited to round out a great coaching staff, and I know Rudy's ready to get to work."

Jaramillo has shown a penchant to work wonders with reclamation projects similar to the Cardinals' pitching coach Dave Duncan. With Texas, Jaramillo pulled career years out of Mark DeRosa, Milton Bradley and Gary Matthews Jr., not to mention one former Cubs slugger looking to hit a milestone.

"We got 94 RBIs and 22 home runs out of Sammy [Sosa]," Jaramillo said, referring to Sosa's 2008 campaign with Texas during which he hit his 600th homer. "And he didn't even get 500 at-bats. So I was very happy to work with Sammy."

More than anything, Jaramillo isn't afraid to get into hitters' faces to make them work harder. He will make sure these players put in their time in the cage, veteran or rookie. He will also make sure they are prepared at the plate, physically and mentally.

"Sometimes players get complacent," Jaramillo said. "You have to reprogram those hitters. I will get them to believe in themselves."

This time it was to see Sam Fuld pick up his first major-league RBI. And of course, he did it with some style, hitting a home run to deep rightfield to get it done all by himself. Fuld made a name for himself -- and rewarded many of the organization's scouts and minor-league coaches who have praised him for his baseball IQ and plate discipline -- this season with a number of full-extension catches as well as a .299 batting average and .409 on-base percentage.

Being that it was Fuld's first home run, it was worth paying close attention to the dugout's reaction. Sure enough, the team gave Fuld the silent treatment while the outfielder beckoned them on a little bit. They held still until Fuld walked by Derrek Lee, who reached back to give him a big pat on the back.

"I kind of sniffed out what they were doing when I got back in there," Fuld told reporters. "But it meant a lot to me."

Once again, Cubs fans, you showed why you are the best in baseball. After Derrek Lee's eighth-inning flyout, the near-sellout crowd gave him a standing ovation for his outstanding season.

"I wasn't expecting it; I didn't know how to react," Lee told reporters after the game. "I appreciate it. It was really cool."

Thanks to all of our fans who supported us at the ballpark or across the nation by subscribing to Vine Line this season.

About 60 front office employees and their guests made the two-and-a-half hour trip up to Milwaukee. For the last three years or so, we've made a trip of some sort like this. Last year it was to Peoria, to see our Class-A Chiefs and then-skipper Ryne Sandberg.

Decked out in our best Cubs blue or some facsimile thereof, we cheered on our team to a 7-1 win. The enthusiasm was overwhelming....The staff bonding was palpable....We saw a great night of hitting from first baseman Derrek Lee and a solid outing from
right-hander Randy Wells. Also, rookie outfielder Tyler Colvin made a spectacular catch in the ninth inning, robbing the Brewers of a home run. Colvin then caught another running line drive to center to end the game. An auspicious start for the 2006 first-round pick, indeed.

But the main attraction was Miller Park's famous Klement's Sausage Race. The contest traditionally pits five cased meats against one another in a foot race that can only be described as whole-hog chaos.

Unbeknownst to us, however, our own Hayley DeWitte and Vijay Tekchandani were participating in the race! They successfully kept it quiet until it started filtering out into the stands where we were sitting. For those of you who don't

Hayley donned the "Hot Dog" costume, while Vijay became the "Polish".

And they were off!

Out of the gate, Vijay the Polish had good position in the middle of the pack, but the Italian Sausage blew right by him, along with the Brat. Hayley the Hot Dog pulled up the rear of the pack. Down the home stretch, Vijay maintained his lead on the Chorizo, but the Italian and Brat were just too many lengths ahead to catch.

Alas, try as their little legs might, Vijay the Polish came in third and Hayley the Hot Dog came in a distant fifth.

Despite coming up short of victory, the experience was "wurst" remembering.

"It was awesome," Vijay said. "I was on Cloud 9. I actually false started before they said go, so I took a step back right from the start. But I was really concentrating on not falling, to be honest."

Organized by the West Side Rooters Social Club, the event benefitted Chicago Cubs Charities, supporting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Major League Baseball Dominican Development Alliance.

Several current Cubs players joined Soto, including Alfonso Soriano, Aramis Ramirez, Derrek Lee, Carlos Marmol, Jake Fox, Sam Fuld, Randy Wells and John Grabow. Also present was "Mr. Cub" Ernie Banks, chairman of the West Side Rooters Social Club.

We talked to several players, in Spanish, about their charitable support:

VL: Why are you participating in the Rooters Ball?

Geovany Soto: Well, growing up in Puerto Rico, I was lucky that I had everything I needed and I was healthy all my life. But I saw the needs around me, and I thought that, if I ever had the chance, I would love to help kids. And in this case, kids with diabetes need a lot of help. Also, when I was playing in the minors, I had a coach [Alan Dunn] whose son was diagnosed with diabetes. I had a really good relationship with him and his son, and that painful moment for them affected me because they were important to me.

Alfonso Soriano: Geovany invited me. I am here supporting him in this worthy cause. Tonight we are participating for the Chicago Cubs.

Jake Fox: No. 1, I have great respect for Geovany Soto, and when he invited me to participate, I did it gladly. This is a noble cause, and when a player of his caliber asks you to help, you do it because that's what friends are for. Another reason is that my wife has diabetes. She is a Type 1 diabetic, and every time I can help JDRF, I am first in line.

VL: We know some of the proceeds from this event will go to the Dominican Republic through the MLB Dominican Development Alliance. What does it feel like to know that you are helping the Dominican community?

Soto: The Dominican Republic is the sister island of Puerto Rico--they are next to each other--and every time I can help them, I do it, giving these kids something extra now that I can help.

Soriano: I am from the Dominican Republic, and when I was young, there were no organizations helping us on the island. I did not get help from anybody, and when I signed a contract [with the Hiroshima Carp] really young, 17 years old, and left for Japan, I felt I was not prepared to go there. If the major leagues can help these kids prepare better, it will be really good for them to have more knowledge.

Carlos Marmol: Yes, I feel honored that Geovany invited me. I would help not only the Dominican communities but any other country. Thanks to God that I see lots of people helping us. I hope this continues.

Ramirez: Not only that, even if the money was not going to the Dominican Republic, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is also really important. Many kids suffer from diabetes and I am here to support them too, it's not important if the money goes to Santo Domingo or not.

VL: As a baseball star, do you feel the responsibility to help and inspire Dominican kids?

Soriano: If all these kids who like baseball in the Dominican or the world see me as an inspiration to better themselves and succeed, it's something really big to me. We are all responsible and try to help because fans know us and respect our opinions.

Marmol: Yes, I do. As long as God gives me the opportunity to help others, I will do it gladly as thanks for everything that was given to me. I hope that the players after me will be willing to do the same.

VL: Jake, you are returning to play in the Dominican this winter. What have you learned from your experience there?

Fox: I will play for Licey in Santo Domingo, and I am grateful for all the help the team gave me to play there. I have a lot of respect for Dominican players. It's difficult to play baseball in another country because it's difficult to learn the culture, the way of life and get used to the food. I have new respect for the players that come here....I studied Spanish for two years. Also, I learned Spanish from the Latin players in the minors. My favorite players are the Latin players because they have a lot a heart for the game and they are always happy people.

VL: What is your favorite food, and where did you learn to speak Spanish?

Fox: I like tostones (fried plantains) a lot! It's my favorite food. I learned Spanish in college. I studied Spanish for two years. Also, I learned Spanish from the Latino players in the minors. My favorite players are the Latino players, because they have a lot a heart for the game and they are happy people, always.

It has been a long time since my last diary. We have been struggling in August and do need to start winning at this point of the season. We only have about 40 games left. The team and each player must perform at their best in order to win. I have been feeling good, although it is a little difficult to adjust to playing center- and rightfield positions, and to starting and coming off the bench.

On-base percentage? I am not really thinking about any number, but it is a good thing to get on base no matter what the situation is. I think this has been one of my offensive strengths since I was in Japan. Although I don't know if I have a good eye at the plate, I do have good vision!

I hit my 11th home run of this season, and it made it the 11th consecutive year of hitting double-digit home runs [since his rookie year in Japan]. I am not looking for a home run at the plate, but I am happy when I get it.

I am really proud of Mr. Takeshi Yamasaki, who achieved 350 home runs and 1,000 RBI the other day. It is simply fascinating. [Mr. Yamasaki is currently 40 years old and playing for the Touhoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan.] We had talked over the phone and he was really happy, but he also told me that he will do anything he can do to take his team to the playoffs. He also said I need to do my best for my team.

Again, I would like to congratulate him on surpassing 1,500 hits, 1,000 RBI and 350 home runs. I do want to continue performing my best until the end, so please keep cheering for us.

But from what I am told, it was a much-preferred and welcomed alternative to the typical 4 AM wake-up call for 6 AM flights to further Pacific Coast League cities like Portland, Fresno and Salt Lake City.

Today, the guys were headed to Omaha, Neb., just a short two hours away down Interstate 80, and I was going with them.

Everyone's seen the 1988 film "Bull Durham" starring Kevin Costner. There's a classic scene where Costner's character Crash Davis is telling all his teammates about his time in the big leagues while strumming a guitar confiscated from a shrill Nuke LaLoosh.

Well, right-hander Justin Berg, who apparently plays in a band in his off-season, brings a guitar on the road, as does rightfielder Brad Snyder. But neither pulled out their axes on the bus.

"I only play in my hotel room," Berg said. However, during his brief cup of coffee earlier this season, I saw Berg's guitar in the home clubhouse. In fact, I saw the guitar before I saw Berg. But on this trip, the guitar and wa-wa pedals were stowed below.

Some guys slept, some guys just listened to music. Left-hander JR Mathes watched a movie on his laptop. It was surprisingly quiet, guys weren't even talking to each other much. Because Omaha was so close, manager Bobby Dickerson, who normally flies ahead of the team to rent a car for the staff, simply drove ahead in his own truck so that the staff would not have to rent a car. In the minor leagues, cutting costs is applicable all over.

Dickerson is a fair, but tough manager, who is not afraid of calling out a player, but will offer a pat on the back just as readily. At the Triple-A level, many of the players have "grown-up" responsibilities, supporting spouses and children, mortgages. In a short trip like this, he allowed several players who had family with them to drive themselves to Omaha. So the bus was a little light of personnel.

I asked infielder Bobby Scales--who himself is married-- about the seeming lack of interaction among his teammates. A veteran of nearly 11 minor-league seasons, Scales has seen a lot and his insight was enlightening.

"Part of it is the technology," Scales said. "You mentioned Bull Durham. Yeah, they put a lot of stuff in movies, but really, if you think about it, technology has changed things. Guys have a lot personal entertainment devices, so guys aren't really talking all that much. I think guys back in the day probably talked more because there was nothing else to do.

"The other thing is this team is very heavy on both ends, there aren't a lot of guys in the middle," Scales added.

"There are a bunch of older guys, maybe 27 or older then a bunch of guys 24 and younger. So there's a gap there. What do you talk about? I talk about my wife and my house, but these younger guys don't want to hear that."

The busiest guy on the bus was trainer Matt Johnson, whose duties also include acting as the traveling secretary--arranging bus and plane rides, keeping track of meal money and hotel arrangements. Or in the case of this photo, coordinating travel arrangements for the end of the season for outfielder So Taguchi, who lives in St. Louis.

"Sometimes there's a lot to do that isn't necessarily athletic training," said Johnson, the LaGrange Park, Ill., native said. "First and foremost, our job is to keep these guys healthy, but there are a lot of other things you have to do as well. It is the minor leagues."

I was commenting to Andrea Breen, Iowa's manager of media relations that the clouds covering Iowa will most likely meet me in Chicago when I return tomorrow.

It was business as usual for these farmhands, most of them strolling into the clubhouse around 10:00. Poker chips lay strewn across a table in case an impromptu game might just break out during a rain delay. Clubhouse manager Cleo Welch was busy cooking breakfast--big fluffy pancakes, some eggs.

Five guys were taking early cage work with hitting coach Desi Wilson. Utilityman Matt Matulia, catcher Chris Robinson, and infielders Darwin Barney and Bobby Scales were all taking their hacks.

Andrea told me that when she asked the players to fill out a questionnaire at the during the season, the player teammates voted as the "most intense" was Scales. In the cage, that was evident.

Always quick with a smile and a guy who loves to talk about college football--especially his alma mater the University of Michigan--you'd never think Scales was that intense given his usually cheery disposition when we last saw him in Chicago. But there he was, talking and muttering to himself, motivating himself, trying to talk himself into squaring up the ball better and not swing a bad pitches. He takes his job very seriously, and after getting his first taste of the big leagues this year, he desperately wants to return.

Outside, the pitchers started throwing long toss; Jeff Samardzija looked relaxed, as did lefty James Russell. Playing a different kind of long toss was Micah Hoffpauir and Matt Craig. They were throwing the pigskin around a little bit.

As a guy who was with the big-league club most of the season, Hoffpauir is in the awkward position of being a strong consideration for a call-up but he has put up mediocre numbers at Iowa.

"I don't have any control over what happens in Chicago," Hoffpauir said. "My numbers aren't what they should be, but I've been working things out, trying to right the ship here."

He has tried to prevent the impending Sept. 1 date from hovering in his mind, despite his eagerness to return to Chicago. Like Scales, when you get that taste, you want more. There's something special when the skipper calls you in on that day.

"For younger guys, they probably aren't even thinking about [Sept.1]; they're just happy to be in Triple A," Hoffpauir said. "But for some older guys, they might be a little more disappointed. But I remember when me and Koyie Hill went up at the same time. Pat [Listach] called us in. We both had been up once already, so he told us together. But Casey McGehee hadn't been up yet. So when it was his turn, they called him in by himself to make it a little more special."

It was Chris Robinson's last game, too, chipping in a single for good measure. Afterward, he shook hands with every one of his teammates and coaches and set off to the Great White North and Team Canada. To a man, Iowa personnel and the team all said Robinson was one of their favorite players this year.

The I-Cubs took down the Redhawks again, 2-0, behind some fine pitching from Mitch Atkins, John Gaub and Blake Parker.

Even at Triple A, the Cubs were chasing the Cardinals.

The Iowa Cubs entered tonight trailing the Memphis Redbirds by a game and a half. I'm here doing a story for Vine Line following our Triple-A club. I wanted to see what life was like for Triple-A players leading up to the Sept. 1 call up day.

Not only that, I wanted to see what that proverbial minor-league bus ride was like. Thanks to Cubs farm director Oneri Fleita and Iowa Cubs media relations manager Andrea Breen, I was able to somehow weasel my way on to the bus for their Aug. 30 road trip to Omaha.

But before that, I am taking in two games at Principal Park, watching the I-Cubs take on the Oklahoma City Redhawks, the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers.

Before the game, I wandered around batting practice saying hi to a bunch of players and coaches. There were a lot of familiar faces, as many of them, like Andres Blanco, Micah Hoffpauir, Bobby Scales, Justin Berg, Jeff Samardzija, Mitch Atkins and Jeff Stevens, have seen big-league action this year. It was almost as if I were watching the Chicago club.

Blanco came over to me and laughed, "Hey, did they send you down, too?"

Hitting coach Desi Wilson was watching behind the cage while catcher Chris Robinson lined a shot to third where Andres Blanco, who has been battling a calf injury, snagged the ball that would have certainly speared teammate Nate Spears.

"There's baseball going on right now, you know!" yelled Hoffpauir.

Hoffpauir, who had made the big-league club out of spring training seemed to be in OK spirits, but there was a tinge of melancholy.

"How you doin' Hoffy?"

"I'm doing fine. Things in Chicago good for you?"

"It's been a little rough, as you might have heard."

"Yeah, well, it's still where you want to be, right?"

And that was when it hit me that even though the big-league team was struggling, as a player, the big-leagues was where he would rather be.

Don't get me wrong; he loves Des Moines, saying "it's a great city. Quiet. Clean. A lot like where I live now." But he'd trade it for a ticket back to Chicago in an instant.

The I-Cubs ended up winning 7-4. Robinson's last game is tomorrow, as he will be going to play with Team Canada. He was voted the team's MVP.
