Cubs Minor League Report: 5/17/16

Tennessee overpowered its opponent, and South Bend pitching carried the load in wins Tuesday. Iowa couldn’t hold on, and Myrtle Beach was rained out, with a doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor-league Cubs action.

The I-Cubs could not overcome an early Reno lead and fell to the Aces, 5-3.

  • RF-CF Juan Perez (.292) went 2 for 5 with a solo homer (2). He has a hit in five consecutive games (6 for 15/.400).
  •  C Willson Contreras (.339) reached base three times, going 1 for 2 with two walks and an RBI (19).
  • CF Albert Almora (.333) went 1 for 4, extending his hitting streak to 14 games.
  • SS Munenori Kawasaki (.268) finished 1 for 3 with a triple (1) and a walk.
  • LHP Gerardo Concepcion (2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB) finished the game and extended his scoreless innings streak to 26.2 IP, dating to last season.

The Smokies went 6 for 12 with runners in scoring position to top Birmingham, 9-4.

  • RHP Tyler Skulina (3.76) picked up the win, striking out seven and surrendering just one earned run on two his in six innings.
  • SS Carlos Penalver (.230) reached base four times, going 3 for 3 with a walk. He had a pair of doubles (9), two RBI (18) and three runs scored.
  • RF Bijan Rademacher (.309) finished 3 for 4 with two doubles (5), two RBI (17) and a run scored.
  • 1B Ryan Dent (.138) notched his second multi-hit game of the season, going 2 for 4 with a double (1) and three RBI (6).

South Bend pitchers fanned 10 batters and only allowed five hits en route to a 2-1 victory.

  • CF Donnie Dewees (.304) went 1 for 4 with two RBI (28). He has knocked in nine runs in his last four games and leads the Midwest League in RBI.
  • 2B Andrew Ely (.292) finished 2 for 4 with a double (6) and a hit-by-pitch.
  • 3B Jesse Hodges (.345) went 1 for 3 with a triple (1), a walk and a run scored.
  • SS Bryant Flete (.257) reached base three times, going 1 for 2 with two walks and a run scored.
  • LHP Carson Sands (3.26 ERA) pitched five innings, giving up one earned run. It’s the only run he’s surrendered in his last 16 innings.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 9/14/15

Myrtle Beach claimed Game 2 of the best-of-five Mills Cup Championship Series, blanking Wilmington on the road, 2-0. The Pelicans play for the Carolina League title on Wednesday at home.

  • DH Victor Caratini (.438) went 2-for-3 with two doubles (3), drew a walk and drove in both of the Pelicans’ runs (6). It marked his second game-winning RBI of the playoffs.
  • CF Pin-Chieh Chen (.333) finished 2-for-4 and scored twice.
  • RF Jorge Soler went 1-for-4 in his third rehab game.
  • RHP Tyler Skulina earned the win, tossing 5.0 scoreless frames and surrendering just one hit.
  • RHP David Berg earned his second save with a perfect ninth inning.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 9/7/15

South Bend closed out its campaign with a win, and Tennessee salvaged a doubleheader split to end the year. Both Iowa and Myrtle Beach finished the regular season on a losing note. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s Cubs minor league action:

Iowa allowed seven runs in the final two innings, falling 7-4 in the season finale at Round Rock. Iowa finished 80-64, the fifth-most wins in Iowa’s Pacific Coast League history.

  • CF John Andreoli (.277) went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a stolen base (33). It was his second straight multi-hit game. He led the team in stolen bases.
  • DH Mike Baxter (.279) finished 2-for-4 with a triple (3) and a run scored.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.259) went 1-for-4 with his team-high 18th home run.

Tennessee closed out its 2015 season by splitting a doubleheader at Biloxi.

  • C Willson Contreras went 4-for-4 in Game 1 to raise his batting average to .333, clinching the Southern League batting title. Contreras is the first Smokies player to win the batting title since Joe Gate in 1978 and the sixth overall in club history. He finished the season with a six-game hitting streak (.444/12-for-27).
  • RHP Neil Ramirez fanned one batter in 1.0 scoreless inning of relief, collecting the win in Game 1.
  • SS Bryant Flete (.195) and C Tyler Pearson (.150) each tripled in Game 2, the only extra-base hits on the day for Tennessee.

Myrtle Beach allowed five runs in the second inning, dropping a 5-4 decision at Wilmington in the regular season finale. The Pelicans will face Winston-Salem in the best-of-three Southern League Division Championship Series beginning Wednesday.

  • 1B Jacob Rogers (.249) finished 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI (69).

Iowa and Eugene continued their winning ways, and Tennessee rolled to a victory Thursday. But Myrtle Beach and South Bend were defeated in one-run games, while Mesa was rained out. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league Cubs action:

  • 2B Javier Baez (.316) went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base (17), extending his hitting streak to 13 games (.439/25-for-57) with 12 runs scored and 13 RBI during that stretch.

First-place Eugene won its fourth straight game, topping visiting Spokane, 2-1.

  • SS Andrew Ely (.321) finished 1-for-3 with a walk and scored the game-winning run in the eighth.
  • RHP Adbert Alzolay (2.09) collected his fifth win, tossing 6.0 innings of relief. He allowed two hits and one run while striking out nine batters. It was his seventh relief outing of at least 4.0 innings.

Iowa, South Bend and Mesa all grabbed victories Monday, while Tennessee salvaged a doubleheader split. Myrtle Beach’s offense was held in check, and Eugene’s game was suspended due to a power outage. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league Cubs action:

Mesa blanked the AZL Padres, 6-0, despite being outhit 9-8.

  • RF Daniel Spingola (.529) went 2-for-3 with a triple (2) and plated two runs (7). He has recorded three consecutive multi-hit efforts with two doubles, two triples and six RBI during that stretch.
  • LF Roberto Caro (.242) went 1-for-3, earned an RBI (9) and scored twice.
  • DH Dan Vogelbach (.455) went 1-for-1 with a double (2) and three walks.
  • LHP Carlos Rodriguez (4.21) tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of relief and fanned a season-high eight batters without issuing a single walk.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 8/18/15

South Bend jumped out to an early lead, and Mesa scored some late runs in victories Tuesday. Iowa and Eugene both lost one-run games, while Tennessee and Myrtle Beach were rained out. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth to fall to Las Vegas in the series finale, 6-5.

  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.235) went 3-for-4 and scored once, marking his seventh three-hit game.
  • SS Javier Baez (.291) went 2-for-5 with one run scored, extending his hitting streak to four games (.421/8-for-19).
  • 1B Mike Olt (.247) recorded a double (12) and drove in two runs (20).
  • PH Adron Chambers (.270) went 1-for-1 with a two-run single in the fifth (27).

South Bend Cubs (26-24)

Third Place (-7.0)

South Bend jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and held on for a 7-2 win over Dayton.

  • RHP Erick Leal (4.27) pitched 5.0 scoreless innings, striking out four, to pick up the win.
  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.276) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base, marking his 12th three-hit game.
  • LF Ian Happ (.282) finished 2-for-3 with a double (5), a walk, a run scored and two RBI (17). Happ has 12 RBI in his last five games.
  • 2B David Bote (.255) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a two-run homer.
  • 1B Matt Rose (.344) and CF Rashad Crawford (.283) added multi-hit efforts.

Eugene surrendered five runs in the third inning, falling at Boise, 5-4.

  • CF Donnie Dewees (.257) recorded a season-high four hits (4-for-5), swiped two bases and scored three runs, extending his hitting streak to 11 games (16-for-48/.333).
  • 2B Frandy Delarosa (.268) went 1-for-5 with a double (18) and an RBI (24).
  • 3B Andrew Ely (.303) went 1-for-3 and plated one (9).

Mesa scored two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, topping the AZL Reds, 5-3.

  • LF Chris Pieters (.429) went 2-for-3 with two doubles (4), an RBI (4) and one run scored. He has recorded a hit in his first four games with Mesa (6-for-14), with four doubles during that stretch.
  • DH Daniel Spingola (.500) went 2-for-3, knocked a double (4), plated one (5) and scored once.
  • 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.288) also finished 2-for-3, drew a walk and scored once.
  • LHP Ariel Ovando (0.53) earned the win, fanning four batters in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.
  • RHP Duane Underwood (0.00) drew a no decision in his first appearance since June 26.

Eugene cruised to a victory, and Mesa secured both games of a doubleheader Monday. Meanwhile, Iowa couldn’t hang on in a loss, and Tennessee, Myrtle Beach and South Bend all had the afternoon off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

  • 2B Frandy Delarosa (.269) went 2-for-5 with two RBI (23) and one run scored.
  • DH Donnie Dewees (.244) went 2-for-5 and scored once, extending his hitting streak to 10 games (12-for-43/.279).
  • LF Eloy Jimenez (.277) went 2-for-4 with a double (7), an RBI (17) and a walk.
  • 3B Adonis Paula (.270) went 1-for-3 and crushed a two-run homer (1) in the fifth inning.
  • SS Andrew Ely (.306) went 2-for-5 and scored once.
  • RHP Casey Bloomquist (1.69) tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief, surrendering just two hits and fanning four batters. He has allowed just two runs over 10.2 innings with the Emeralds.

Mesa swept the doubleheader against the AZL White Sox.

  • LF Daniel Spingola (.455) went 2-for-3 with a double (3) and a triple, plated three runs (4), swiped a base and scored twice in Game 1.
  • DH Chris Pieters (.364) went 2-for-3 with a double (2), three RBI and one run scored in Game 1.
  • 1B Jose Paniagua (.271) went 1-for-3 and crushed a two-run homer (4) in the third inning in Game 2.
  • RHP Santiago Rodriguez (3.38) tossed 3.0 shutout innings of relief in Game 2 to earn his first win of the season.
