Cubs Minor League Report: 8/22/16

Iowa and Tennessee both picked up wins behind big innings, South Bend’s pitching carried the load, and Eugene was victorious in walk-off fashion Monday. Myrtle Beach had the day off and will resume play tonight. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor-league Cubs action.

Iowa Cubs (59-71)

Third Place (-13.0)

  • LF Bijan Rademacher (.288) went 2-for-3 with a walk, double (2), solo homer (1) and two runs scored. He has hit safely in six straight games (.450/9-for-20).
  • C Tim Federowicz (.291) was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer (8). He is batting .351 (13-for-37) with four homers and 11 RBI in his last nine games.
  • 2B Tommy La Stella (.280) finished 1-for-4 with a double (1) and run scored.
  • RHP Stephen Fife (3.26 ERA) pitched four scoreless innings, striking out four.
  • RHP Armando Rivero (2 IP, 2 BB, 5 SO) earned the win, striking out five batters in two scoreless innings of relief.

The Smokies scored five runs in the last two innings to defeat host Jackson, 10-7.

  • CF Lane Adams (.267) went 3-for-5 with two doubles (4), one run scored and two RBI (9).
  • 1B Victor Caratini (.297) reached three times, going 2-for-4 with a double (24), a walk and a run scored.
  • RF Kelly Dugan (.236) and DH Chesny Young (.302) each registered multi-hit games.
  • 2B Ian Happ (.270) hit a two-run homer (5) in the second inning, and C David Freitas (.284) added a solo shot in the eighth inning (4). Freitas has homered in consecutive games and has scored two runs in three straight contests.

  • RF Eddy Martinez (.261) was 2-for-5 with three runs scored, one RBI (65) and a stolen base (7).
  • DH Sam Tidaback (.375) went 2-for-4 with a double (1) and two RBI (2).
  • 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.320), LF Eloy Jimenez (.337) and SS Andruw Monasterio (.209) all added multi-hit games. Jimenez appeared in his first game since Aug. 14.
  • RHP Duane Underwood Jr. (0.00 ERA) has yet to allow a hit in two outings (5 IP) with Sound Bend, walking two batters and fanning seven in total.

Eugene snapped a two-game skid with a 1-0 walk-off victory in nine innings over Everett.

  • RHP Michael Knighton (2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 SO) recorded his 10th relief outing of at least two innings.

  • CF Luis Ayala (.277) went 2-for-5 with an RBI (18) and two stolen bases (18).

Cubs Minor League Recap: 7/10/16

Tennessee battled back, Myrtle Beach had a few big innings, and South Bend scored late as all registered wins Sunday. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor-league Cubs action.

Iowa closed out the season’s first half with a 7-4 setback at Colorado Springs.

  • LF Matt Murton (.339) went 2 for 5 with a run scored. He is batting .429 (15 for 35) in his last eight games, including six multi-hit efforts.
  • CF John Andreoli (.239) was 2 for 4 with a double (12), a walk and a run scored.
  • RF Mark Zagunis (.275) went 0 for 2 but walked twice, scored a run and drove in a run (16). He has reached base in 12 straight games.
  • RHP Drew Rucinski (5.83 ERA) gave up one earned run in six innings.

The Smokies rallied from a 3-0 deficit to claim a 5-4 victory over the visiting Lookouts.

  •  C Willson Contreras (.339) reached base three times, going 1 for 2 with two walks and an RBI (19).
  • CF Albert Almora (.333) went 1 for 4, extending his hitting streak to 14 games.
  • SS Munenori Kawasaki (.268) finished 1 for 3 with a triple (1) and a walk.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 9/14/15

Myrtle Beach claimed Game 2 of the best-of-five Mills Cup Championship Series, blanking Wilmington on the road, 2-0. The Pelicans play for the Carolina League title on Wednesday at home.

  • DH Victor Caratini (.438) went 2-for-3 with two doubles (3), drew a walk and drove in both of the Pelicans’ runs (6). It marked his second game-winning RBI of the playoffs.
  • CF Pin-Chieh Chen (.333) finished 2-for-4 and scored twice.
  • RF Jorge Soler went 1-for-4 in his third rehab game.
  • RHP Tyler Skulina earned the win, tossing 5.0 scoreless frames and surrendering just one hit.
  • RHP David Berg earned his second save with a perfect ninth inning.

South Bend closed out its campaign with a win, and Tennessee salvaged a doubleheader split to end the year. Both Iowa and Myrtle Beach finished the regular season on a losing note. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s Cubs minor league action:

  • CF John Andreoli (.277) went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a stolen base (33). It was his second straight multi-hit game. He led the team in stolen bases.
  • DH Mike Baxter (.279) finished 2-for-4 with a triple (3) and a run scored.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.259) went 1-for-4 with his team-high 18th home run.

Tennessee closed out its 2015 season by splitting a doubleheader at Biloxi.

  • C Willson Contreras went 4-for-4 in Game 1 to raise his batting average to .333, clinching the Southern League batting title. Contreras is the first Smokies player to win the batting title since Joe Gate in 1978 and the sixth overall in club history. He finished the season with a six-game hitting streak (.444/12-for-27).
  • RHP Neil Ramirez fanned one batter in 1.0 scoreless inning of relief, collecting the win in Game 1.

Iowa, South Bend and Mesa all grabbed victories Monday, while Tennessee salvaged a doubleheader split. Myrtle Beach’s offense was held in check, and Eugene’s game was suspended due to a power outage. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league Cubs action:

South Bend snapped a three-game skid, topping Fort Wayne in the series finale, 7-4.

  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.279) went 2-for-5 with a double (17), an RBI (27), a stolen base (29) and two runs scored.
  • 3B Jesse Hodges (.247) had two doubles (16), drove in one (31) and scored once.
  • DH Kevin Encarnacion (.272) went 3-for-4, scored twice and swiped two bags (5).
  • 2B David Bote (.258) went 1-for-4 and crushed a solo homer in the first inning, extending his hitting streak to six games (8-for-24/.333).

Eugene surrendered two runs in the ninth and ultimately fell to Spokane in the 11th inning, 4-3.

  • CF Donnie Dewees (.272) continued his tear with a 2-for-4 day that included a triple and one run scored. He has a 16-game hitting streak (.356/26-for-73) with 18 runs scored in that stretch.
  • LF Eloy Jimenez (.280) went 1-for-5, knocked a double (8), plated one (24) and scored once, extended his hitting streak to five games (.320/8-for-25).
  • SS Andrew Ely (.313) picked up his 12th RBI and added a hit.

Mesa scored in the 11th inning to best the AZL Giants, 1-0. Each team recorded just five hits.

  • DH Carlos Jimenez (.232) and C Marcus Mastrobuoni (.171) each recorded a hit.
  • RHP Duane Underwood (0.00) made his second scoreless start with Mesa, allowing just two hits in 3.0 frames.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 8/20/15

Iowa, Eugene and Mesa all won behind strong offensive showings, while Tennessee, Myrtle Beach and South Bend each came out on the losing end. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Third Place (-6.0)

Iowa bested Salt Lake, 13-2. Eight I-Cubs recorded an RBI, and 10 players picked up hits in the victory.

  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.262) went 3-for-6 with a home run (16), two RBI (71) and three runs scored. He has recorded an RBI in five straight games (six total).
  • DH Javier Baez (.303) finished 2-for-6 with a double (13), two RBI (51) and one run scored, extending his hitting streak to six games (.448/13-for-29) with six-consecutive multi-hit efforts.
  • 2B Tommy La Stella (.360) went 3-for-5, crushed a triple, drove in one (5) and scored once.
  • 1B Mike Olt (.246) recorded a two-run homer (7) and a double (13), finishing 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
  • C Taylor Teagarden (.303) went 2-for-5 and hit his fifth homer, a two-run shot in the fifth.
  • SS Chris Valaika (.270) went 2-for-5, hit an RBI double (21) and scored once.

Tennessee surrendered a season-high 17 runs, falling to Montgomery, 17-4.

  • LF Bijan Rademacher (.258) and 3B Jeimer Candelario (.288) each went 2-for-4 with a double. Rademacher extended his hitting streak to five games (8-for-20/.400)
  • 1B-P Wes Darvill (.169) finished 1-for-4, plated two (23) and scored once. He also made his first career pitching appearance, tossing a scoreless inning of relief while allowing just one hit.

Myrtle Beach allowed three runs in the final two frames, falling at Winston-Salem, 5-4, in walk-off fashion.

  • CF Pin-Chieh Chen (.274) went 2-for-5 with a double (15), an RBI (25) and a run scored.
  • 3B Jason Vosler (.259) finished 2-for-4 and drove in one run (14).
  • C Victor Caratini (.244) went 2-for-4.
  • RF Mark Zagunis (.274) went 1-for-5, knocked a double (23), earned a RBI (49) and scored once.
  • RHP Daury Torrez (3.93) recorded his fourth straight 6.0-inning outing and 11th quality start.

South Bend saw its three-game winning streak snapped, falling to Dayton, 7-2.

  • RF Jeffry Baez (.278) went 2-for-5 and scored once, extending his hitting streak to four games (.444/8-for-18).

Eugene’s offense recorded its second straight double-digit output, rolling to a 12-5 victory over Salem-Keizer.

  • RF Alex Bautista (.277) finished 3-for-4 with an RBI (7), a walk and two runs scored.

  • SS Andruw Monasterio (.262) recorded a season-high four hits, going 4-for-5 with a double (6), an RBI (16), a stolen base (5) and one run scored.
  • LF-CF Roberto Caro (.253) went 2-for-4, drew a walk and scored a season-high three runs.
