Cubs Minor League Recap: 8/24/15

Iowa, South Bend and Mesa all grabbed victories Monday, while Tennessee salvaged a doubleheader split. Myrtle Beach’s offense was held in check, and Eugene’s game was suspended due to a power outage. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league Cubs action:

Iowa scored eight runs in the fourth and blanked Fresno, 9-0.

  • 3B Javier Baez (.315) went a perfect 4-for-4 with a double (14), a home run (13), a walk, a stolen base (16), two RBI (57) and three runs scored. Baez extended his hitting streak to nine games (20-for-42/.476) with eight multi-hit games in that stretch.
  • C Taylor Teagarden (.319) went 2-for-4 with a double (8), plated three runs (26) and scored once, extending his hitting streak to six games (.565/13-for-23).
  • LF John Andreoli (.286) finished 2-for-5, swiped a base (28) and scored once.
  • RF Adron Chambers (.275) went 2-for-4 and scored once.

Tennessee split a twinbill at Chattanooga. The Smokies surrendered three runs in the third inning of Game 1, falling 4-2, but topped the Lookouts in Game 2, 4-1.

  • C-DH Willson Contreras (.326) compiled a 4-for-6 day with a solo homer (8) and a walk in Game 1 and a double (31), stolen base (2) and run scored in Game 2.
  • SS Jonathan Mota (.242) had three hits on the day in five at-bats, blasting a solo homer (1), driving in two (13) and scoring once.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 8/23/15

Myrtle Beach mounted a late-inning comeback, South Bend snapped a losing streak, and Mesa took the win in extras on Sunday. Only Eugene lost, and they did so surrendering a lead in extras. Iowa had the day off, while Tennessee was rained out. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

The Pelicans scored four runs in the ninth and contained Frederick’s late rally, topping the Keys, 9-7.

  • 3B Ben Carhart (.258) enjoyed a 3-for-5 day with two home runs (6), four RBI (20) and three runs scored. He has homered in back-to-back games and extended his hitting streak to five games (.444/8-for-18).
  • C Victor Caratini (.244) went 2-for-4 with a double (25) and a two-run homer (4).
  • DH Cael Brockmeyer (.247) finished 2-for-4 with a double (6), a two-run homer (3) and two runs scored.
  • CF Pin-Chieh Chen (.277) went 2-for-5 with an RBI single (29) and one run scored.

It was a successful day for Cubs affiliates, as Iowa, Myrtle Beach and South Bend all claimed victories on Sunday. Eugene also picked up a win as four pitchers combined for a no-hitter. Eugene recorded its fifth no-hitter in franchise history as four pitchers combined to blank Everett, 3-0.

  • RHP Preston Morrison (3.0 IP, 4 K), LHP Kyle Twomey (3.0 IP, BB, 3 K), RHP Luis Hernandez (2.0 IP, 2 BB, 4 K) and RHP Trey Masek (1.0 IP, 1 K) contributed to the Ems first no-hitter since 1968. Morrison has allowed just one run in 13.2 innings this season, including four consecutive scoreless appearances (10.0 IP).
  • RF Kevonte Mitchell (.171) went 2-for-3 with a double (6), a run scored and an RBI (9).

 

Cubs Minor League Recap: 8/13/15

South Bend and Myrtle Beach cruised to victories Thursday, but the rest of the Cubs affiliates all came out on the losing end. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (65-53)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Second Place (-6.0)

Iowa gave up four unanswered runs in the final four frames, dropping an 8-4 decision to Nashville.

  • 2B Tommy La Stella (.500) went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in his first game with Iowa.
  • CF Matt Szczur (.300) extended his Iowa hitting streak to 14 games (.367/22-for-60), going 2-for-4 with a double (12).
  • 1B Christian Villanueva (.268) reached base twice, going 0-for-2 with a run scored and two walks.
  • LHP Eric Jokisch made his first appearance with Iowa since June 9.

Tennessee Smokies (23-23)

Third Place (-5.5)

Tennessee scored twice in the ninth, but could not complete the comeback, falling 4-3 at Chattanooga.

  • CF Albert Almora (.270) went 2-for-3 with a double (20), a walk and a run scored. He has hit safely in 10-straight games (.513/20-for-39), including eight multi-hit efforts, and is batting .423 (22-for-52) in 13 August games.
  • LF Jacob Hannemann (.240) went 2-for-5 and is hitting .333 (17-for-51) in 12 August contests.
  • RHP Pierce Johnson has posted a 1.80 ERA (4 ER/20.0 IP) in three August starts.

Myrtle Beach scored five times in the fourth inning to roll to a 9-3 victory over Salem.

  • LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.273) went 1-for-4 with a double (13), an RBI (21) and two runs scored. He has hit safely in five-straight games (.364/8-for-22).
  • RF Chesny Young (.332) extended his hitting streak to six games (.346/9-for-26), going 2-for-5 with a run scored, two RBI (29) and a stolen base (9).
  • 3B Jason Vosler (.283) went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and two runs scored. He has drawn a walk in nine-straight games.

South Bend cruised to a 7-1 victory at Beloit in the rubber game of a three-game series.

  • LF Ian Happ (.238) blasted a grand slam in the fifth inning, for his second home run with South Bend. He finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and five RBI (10).
  • 2B David Bote (.243) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk. It was his second straight multi-hit game.
  • CF Rashad Crawford (.283) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.
  • RHP Dillon Maples (3.72) tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and fanning four.

Eugene collected just three hits in a 7-0 shutout loss against Everett.

  • CF Donnie Dewees (.242), 2B Frandy Delarosa (.274) and LF Eloy Jimenez (.273) each went 1-for-4 with a single.
  • RHP Scott Effross (0.00) tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. He has not allowed a run in two appearances (4.2 IP) this season at Eugene.

The Mesa Cubs scored twice in the first but could not hold on, falling 3-2 against the AZL Giants.

  • 3B P.J. Higgins (.317) went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run homer, accounting for all the team’s scoring. He is 5-for-8 with three runs and four RBI in his last two games.
  • LHP Carlos Rodriguez (4.76) tossed 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, fanning three batters. He has not allowed a run in seven of his last eight appearances.

Iowa continued its hot streak, Tennessee and South Bend both edged out wins, and Mesa rolled its way to victory Wednesday. Myrtle Beach lost a one-run game, and Eugene couldn’t get the bats going. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa won its fifth game in its last six contests, topping Nashville, 3-1. The I-Cubs have won 13 of 16 games.

  • RHP Dallas Beeler (5.16) gave up one earned run in 6.2 innings to pick up his fifth win.
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.233) went 1-for-3 and hit a solo home run in the seventh inning (12).
  • SS Javier Baez (.292) went 1-for-2 with a triple (2), an RBI (46), a walk and a run scored.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.269) also picked up an RBI (65), despite going 0-for-2.

Tennessee Smokies (23-22)

Tennessee scored two runs in the top of the 13th to beat Chattanooga, 4-2.

  • RHP Felix Pena (3.96) pitched 5.0 scoreless innings in a no-decision.
  • RF Billy McKinney (.286) went 2-for-5, knocked a double (26), drove in three runs (38) and drew a walk, extending his hitting streak to seven games (.379/11-for-29) with 10 RBI during that stretch.
  • DH Jacob Rogers (.242) went 1-for-5 and crushed his first homer with the Smokies, a solo shot in the seventh inning.
  • RHP Fernando Cruz (5.47) earned his second win, tossing 3.0 hitless and scoreless innings of relief, walking three and fanning one batter.

Myrtle Beach was unable to overcome an early deficit and fell at Salem, 5-4.

  • LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.273) went 2-for-4 with two doubles (12), an RBI (20), a walk and one run scored. He has hit safely in six of his last seven games.
  • 1B Ben Carhart (.234) finished 1-for-4, plated one (12) and scored once.
  • DH Jordan Hankins (.210) went 2-for-3 with a double (4) and drew a walk.
  • The Pelicans tallied seven doubles in the setback.

South Bend Cubs (22-23)

South Bend topped Beloit, 2-1. The two teams face off in the series rubber match tonight.

  • RHP Trevor Clifton (4.45) pitched 6.0 scoreless innings, fanning seven to pick up the win.
  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.273) went 2-for-5 with a double (15), a triple (5) and one run scored. He is hitting .458 (22-for-48) with 12 runs scored in 10 August contests.
  • 3B Matt Rose (.250) went 1-for-4 and blasted his first homer with South Bend. He has recorded a hit and an RBI in his first three games with the SB Cubs.
  • 1B Gioskar Amaya (.268) reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk, a triple (2) and an RBI (37). He has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games.

Eugene fell to Northwest League North leader Everett, 6-1. The Emeralds mustered just five hits.

  • 2B Frandy Delarosa (.274) went 2-for-4, knocked two doubles (16) and scored once. It marked his third consecutive multi-hit game with four doubles during that stretch.
  • DH Ian Rice (.281) went 1-for-3, drove in one (12) and drew a walk. Rice has picked up six RBI in his last three contests.

The Mesa Cubs rolled over the AZL Rangers, 11-5. Seven AZL Cubs earned an RBI in the victory.

  • 3B P.J. Higgins (.317) went 4-for-5 and fell a homer short of the cycle, hitting a double (4), a triple (3) and two singles. He also recorded two RBI (7) and scored twice.
  • 1B Jose Paniagua (.275) finished 3-for-5, plated two (23) and scored once.
  • CF Darryl Wilson (.316) also went 3-for-5, belted a triple (2) and scored twice.
  • 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.285) recorded a 2-for-4 day with a double (4), an RBI (22), a walk and three runs scored.
  • SS Andruw Monasterio (.221) went 2-for-5, blasted a two-run homer and scored twice.
  • DH Daniel Springola (.500) was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a walk and one run scored.

Iowa, Myrtle Beach, South Bend and Mesa all picked up wins for the Cubs yesterday, while Tennessee and Eugene both struggled with the bats. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa opened the season’s second half with a 4-1 victory over the Memphis Redbirds.

  • LHP Tsuyoshi Wada made his second rehab start with Iowa, throwing 71 pitches in 6.0 innings. He walked none and struck out five.
  • RHP Rafael Soriano (0.00) made his first appearance with Iowa, striking out three batters and surrendering one hit in a scoreless inning of relief.
  • LF Junior Lake (.310) extended his hitting streak to seven games (.458/11-for-24), going 2-for-4 with a third-inning solo home run.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.261) went 2-for-4 with a double (16) and a run scored.
  • 1B Mike Olt (.219) went 2-for-4 with two doubles (6), one run scored and two RBI (6).

The Smokies surrendered nine runs on 11 hits as they dropped a 9-2 decision at Montgomery.

  • SS Elliot Soto (.275) reached base three times and scored both of the Smokies’ runs, going 1-for-3 with two walks.
  • RF Bijan Rademacher (.242), C Willson Contreras (.319) and 2B Sutton Whiting (.625) all collected a hit and drew two walks. As a team, the I-Cubs collected nine walks and left 11 runners on base.
  • RHP Starling Peralta (3.00) did not allow any hits or runs in 1.2 innings of relief.

Myrtle Beach scored a run in the fourth inning and held on for a 1-0 shutout win at Potomac.

  • RHP Jonathan Martinez recorded his longest scoreless outing of the season, tossing 7.0 innings with four strikeouts and no walks. He has allowed one or no runs in at least 7.0 innings in three of his last four outings and has won six straight decisions.
  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.270) went 1-for-4 with the team’s only run.
  • LHP Michael Heesch (1.48) collected his third save of the season, tossing a scoreless ninth inning. He has not allowed a run in his last three appearances (8.2 IP).

South Bend jumped out to a 9-0 lead after four innings and held on for a 10-6 win over Lansing.

  • LF Yasiel Balaguert (.301) extended his hitting streak to 13 games (.396/21-for-53), going 4-for-5 with a double (16), a solo homer and three runs scored. His four hits tied a season high.
  • 2B David Bote (.236) had his third straight multi-hit game, going 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI (18).
  • SS Gleyber Torres (.308) tallied his 10th game this season with three or more hits, going 3-for-5.
  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.205) went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI (15). He has hit safely in five straight games (.500/9-for-18).

Eugene mustered just four hits in a 4-0 shutout loss at home against Hillsboro.

  • LHP Kyle Twomey has tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in each of his last two outings.
  • RHP Pedro Araujo (3.93) fanned four batters in 2.0 perfect innings of relief.

Mesa Cubs (12-8)

The Mesa Cubs snapped a two-game losing skid, defeating the AZL D-backs, 2-1.

  • CF Robert Garcia (.403) went a perfect 4-for-4 with a stolen base (5), extending his hitting streak to four games (9-for-14). This was his second four-hit game of the season.
  • RF Alex Bautista (.255) went 1-for-4 with his first homer of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning that accounted for both of the team’s runs.
  • RHP Dylan Cease has tossed 6.0 scoreless innings across his last two outings. He has allowed just one earned run in 11.2 innings this season, striking out 10 batters and walking four.
