Cubs Minor League Recap: 8/19/15

Cubs affiliates racked up seven victories Wednesday, with every team picking up at least one win. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (68-56)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Third Place (-7.0)

Iowa scored four runs in the second and cruised to an 8-2 victory at Salt Lake.

  • RF John Andreoli (.286) went 3-for-5 with an RBI (28), two stolen bases (26) and two runs scored.
  • SS Javier Baez (.302) went 3-for-4, drove in one (49), drew a walk and scored once, extending his hitting streak to five games (.478/11-for-23) with five consecutive multi-hit efforts.
  • 2B Chris Valaika (.267) went 2-for-4 with a double (20), an RBI (31) and one run scored.
  • DH Tommy La Stella (.300) went 1-for-1, knocked a double (2), plated one (4), drew two walks and scored once.

Tennessee Smokies (25-26)

Third Place (-6.0)

Tennessee split a doubleheader with Montgomery. The Smokies secured a 7-6 walk-off victory in the ninth inning of the first game, but fell to the Biscuits, 4-2, in a rain-shortened Game 2.

  • DH Taylor Davis (.342) blasted a solo homer (5) in Game 1 and went 1-for-2 with an RBI single (12) in Game 2. It extended his hitting streak to six games (8-for-20/.400).
  • LF Bijan Rademacher (.255) went 2-for-3 and scored twice in the first game.
  • SS Jonathan Mota (.156) finished 1-for-3 and plated two runs (7) in Game 1.
  • RHP Felix Pena (4.10) tossed a complete game (5.0 innings) but took the loss.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (32-20)

Myrtle Beach swept a doubleheader at Winston-Salem, allowing just three runs in 16.0 innings.

  • LF Kevin Brown (.240) crushed a solo home run (4) in Game 1.
  • 3B Jason Vosler (.247) went 1-for-3 in Game 1 with an RBI (13) and one run scored.
  • RF Pin-Chieh Chen (.272) went 1-for-5 and knocked his 14th double in Game 2.
  • RHP Jen-Ho Tseng (3.62) fanned a season-high seven batters and tossed his sixth quality start.

South Bend Cubs (27-24)

Third Place (-7.0)

South Bend won their third straight contest, topping Dayton, 8-3.

  • CF Rashad Crawford (.286) went 2-for-4, knocked a triple (4) and plated a season-high-tying four runs (43).
  • SS Gleyber Torres (.302) hit a two-run homer (4) in the sixth inning for his lone hit of the day.
  • 3B Matt Rose (.353) went 1-for-2 with an RBI (8), two walks and one run scored. He has recorded a hit in his first nine outings with South Bend (12-for-34).
  • RHP Trevor Clifton (4.34) tossed his third consecutive quality start and has fanned seven batters in back-to-back starts.

Eugene Emeralds (12-9)

Second Place (-1.0)

Eugene scored five runs in the first to roll to an 11-5 victory at Boise. Five Emeralds had doubles and six recorded RBI.

  • DH Frandy Delarosa (.274) finished 3-for-6 with a double (19), three RBI (27), a stolen base (10) and a run scored. He has six RBI in his last three games.
  • RF Ricardo Marcano (.253) went 3-for-5 with a double (3), two RBI (12) and two runs scored.
  • 2B Sutton Whiting (.250) went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, an RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored.

Mesa Cubs (12-7)

Mesa blanked the AZL Padres, 6-0, despite being outhit 9-8.

  • RF Daniel Spingola (.529) went 2-for-3 with a triple (2) and plated two runs (7). He has recorded three consecutive multi-hit efforts with two doubles, two triples and six RBI during that stretch.
  • LF Roberto Caro (.242) went 1-for-3, earned an RBI (9) and scored twice.
  • DH Dan Vogelbach (.455) went 1-for-1 with a double (2) and three walks.
  • LHP Carlos Rodriguez (4.21) tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of relief and fanned a season-high eight batters without issuing a single walk.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 8/18/15

South Bend jumped out to an early lead, and Mesa scored some late runs in victories Tuesday. Iowa and Eugene both lost one-run games, while Tennessee and Myrtle Beach were rained out. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa allowed a run in the bottom of the ninth to fall to Las Vegas in the series finale, 6-5.

  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.235) went 3-for-4 and scored once, marking his seventh three-hit game.
  • SS Javier Baez (.291) went 2-for-5 with one run scored, extending his hitting streak to four games (.421/8-for-19).
  • 1B Mike Olt (.247) recorded a double (12) and drove in two runs (20).
  • PH Adron Chambers (.270) went 1-for-1 with a two-run single in the fifth (27).

South Bend Cubs (26-24)

Third Place (-7.0)

South Bend jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and held on for a 7-2 win over Dayton.

  • RHP Erick Leal (4.27) pitched 5.0 scoreless innings, striking out four, to pick up the win.
  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.276) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base, marking his 12th three-hit game.
  • LF Ian Happ (.282) finished 2-for-3 with a double (5), a walk, a run scored and two RBI (17). Happ has 12 RBI in his last five games.
  • 2B David Bote (.255) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a two-run homer.
  • 1B Matt Rose (.344) and CF Rashad Crawford (.283) added multi-hit efforts.

Eugene surrendered five runs in the third inning, falling at Boise, 5-4.

  • CF Donnie Dewees (.257) recorded a season-high four hits (4-for-5), swiped two bases and scored three runs, extending his hitting streak to 11 games (16-for-48/.333).
  • 2B Frandy Delarosa (.268) went 1-for-5 with a double (18) and an RBI (24).
  • 3B Andrew Ely (.303) went 1-for-3 and plated one (9).

Mesa scored two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, topping the AZL Reds, 5-3.

  • LF Chris Pieters (.429) went 2-for-3 with two doubles (4), an RBI (4) and one run scored. He has recorded a hit in his first four games with Mesa (6-for-14), with four doubles during that stretch.
  • DH Daniel Spingola (.500) went 2-for-3, knocked a double (4), plated one (5) and scored once.
  • 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.288) also finished 2-for-3, drew a walk and scored once.

Eugene cruised to a victory, and Mesa secured both games of a doubleheader Monday. Meanwhile, Iowa couldn’t hang on in a loss, and Tennessee, Myrtle Beach and South Bend all had the afternoon off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Eugene won its third straight contest, topping Boise, 7-4. The Emeralds recorded 14 hits in the victory.

  • RF Alex Bautista (.250) went 3-for-4, drove in two (6) and scored once. It marked his first three-hit game of the season.
  • 2B Frandy Delarosa (.269) went 2-for-5 with two RBI (23) and one run scored.

Mesa swept the doubleheader against the AZL White Sox.

  • LF Daniel Spingola (.455) went 2-for-3 with a double (3) and a triple, plated three runs (4), swiped a base and scored twice in Game 1.
  • DH Chris Pieters (.364) went 2-for-3 with a double (2), three RBI and one run scored in Game 1.
  • 1B Jose Paniagua (.271) went 1-for-3 and crushed a two-run homer (4) in the third inning in Game 2.
  • RHP Santiago Rodriguez (3.38) tossed 3.0 shutout innings of relief in Game 2 to earn his first win of the season.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 8/16/15

It was a successful day for Cubs affiliates, as Iowa, Myrtle Beach and South Bend all claimed victories on Sunday. Eugene also picked up a win as four pitchers combined for a no-hitter. Tennessee couldn’t keep up in a loss while Mesa had the day off. Here are some notes from yesterday’s Cubs minor league action:

Iowa scored a run in the ninth inning to claim its second straight victory, topping Las Vegas, 4-3.

  • C Taylor Teagarden (.299) went 3-for-3 with a double (7), a walk and an RBI (21). It was his second-straight multi-hit game and fourth three-hit game of the season.
  • RF John Andreoli (.288) extended his hitting streak to five games (.389/7-for-18), going 2-for-5 with a double (18) and a run scored.
  • SS Javier Baez (.289) collected his second straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double (12), a walk, a run scored and a stolen base (14).

Tennessee allowed 10 unanswered runs over the final five frames, falling 11-4 at Chattanooga.

  • DH Willson Contreras (.331) went 2-for-4 with a double (30), two runs scored and an RBI (65). He is batting .397 (25-for-63) with 15 RBI in 16 August contests.
  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.284) and SS Jonathan Mota (.143) each singled and drew a walk.
  • LF Albert Almora (.268) and 2B Stephen Bruno (.271) each scored a run.

Myrtle Beach took the rubber match against Lynchburg, blanking the Hillcats, 2-0.

  • RF Chesny Young (.335) recorded his seventh three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a double (15) and a run scored. He is batting .321 (17-for-53) with five doubles in 13 August games.
  • DH Jordan Hankins (.227) went 2-for-4 with a double (5) and a run scored.
  • RHP Brad Markey pitched 6.2 scoreless innings, fanning four. He has allowed zero or one run in each of his seven appearances with Myrtle Beach, posting a 0.85 ERA (4 ER/42.1 IP) and earning victories in five of his last six outings.

South Bend earned a 4-1 victory over Wisconsin in the rubber match of a three-game set.

  • DH Ian Happ (.267) went 2-for-3 with a triple (1), a home run (4), a walk, two runs scored and three RBI (15). He has four homers and 13 RBI in his last eight games.
  • 1B Matt Rose (.321) went 2-for-4 and has hit safely in all seven games (9-for-28) with South Bend.
  • RHP Zach Hedges (3.73) gave up one earned run in 5.0 innings, striking out two.
  • RHP Michael Wagner (3.30) and RHP Alex Santana (3.09) each tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

Eugene recorded its fifth no-hitter in franchise history as four pitchers combined to blank Everett, 3-0.

  • RHP Preston Morrison (3.0 IP, 4 K), LHP Kyle Twomey (3.0 IP, BB, 3 K), RHP Luis Hernandez (2.0 IP, 2 BB, 4 K) and RHP Trey Masek (1.0 IP, 1 K) contributed to the Ems first no-hitter since 1968. Morrison has allowed just one run in 13.2 innings this season, including four consecutive scoreless appearances (10.0 IP).
  • RF Kevonte Mitchell (.171) went 2-for-3 with a double (6), a run scored and an RBI (9).

 

Cubs Minor League Recap: 8/13/15

South Bend and Myrtle Beach cruised to victories Thursday, but the rest of the Cubs affiliates all came out on the losing end. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa gave up four unanswered runs in the final four frames, dropping an 8-4 decision to Nashville.

  • 2B Tommy La Stella (.500) went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in his first game with Iowa.
  • CF Matt Szczur (.300) extended his Iowa hitting streak to 14 games (.367/22-for-60), going 2-for-4 with a double (12).
  • 1B Christian Villanueva (.268) reached base twice, going 0-for-2 with a run scored and two walks.
  • LHP Eric Jokisch made his first appearance with Iowa since June 9.

Tennessee Smokies (23-23)

Third Place (-5.5)

Tennessee scored twice in the ninth, but could not complete the comeback, falling 4-3 at Chattanooga.

Myrtle Beach scored five times in the fourth inning to roll to a 9-3 victory over Salem.

  • LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.273) went 1-for-4 with a double (13), an RBI (21) and two runs scored. He has hit safely in five-straight games (.364/8-for-22).
  • RF Chesny Young (.332) extended his hitting streak to six games (.346/9-for-26), going 2-for-5 with a run scored, two RBI (29) and a stolen base (9).
  • 3B Jason Vosler (.283) went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and two runs scored. He has drawn a walk in nine-straight games.

  • 2B David Bote (.243) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk. It was his second straight multi-hit game.
  • CF Rashad Crawford (.283) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.
  • RHP Dillon Maples (3.72) tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and fanning four.

Eugene collected just three hits in a 7-0 shutout loss against Everett.

  • RHP Scott Effross (0.00) tossed 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. He has not allowed a run in two appearances (4.2 IP) this season at Eugene.

The Mesa Cubs scored twice in the first but could not hold on, falling 3-2 against the AZL Giants.

  • LHP Carlos Rodriguez (4.76) tossed 3.1 scoreless innings of relief, fanning three batters. He has not allowed a run in seven of his last eight appearances.

Iowa continued its hot streak, Tennessee and South Bend both edged out wins, and Mesa rolled its way to victory Wednesday. Myrtle Beach lost a one-run game, and Eugene couldn’t get the bats going. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

  • RHP Dallas Beeler (5.16) gave up one earned run in 6.2 innings to pick up his fifth win.
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.233) went 1-for-3 and hit a solo home run in the seventh inning (12).
  • SS Javier Baez (.292) went 1-for-2 with a triple (2), an RBI (46), a walk and a run scored.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.269) also picked up an RBI (65), despite going 0-for-2.

Tennessee Smokies (23-22)

Tennessee scored two runs in the top of the 13th to beat Chattanooga, 4-2.

  • RHP Felix Pena (3.96) pitched 5.0 scoreless innings in a no-decision.
  • RF Billy McKinney (.286) went 2-for-5, knocked a double (26), drove in three runs (38) and drew a walk, extending his hitting streak to seven games (.379/11-for-29) with 10 RBI during that stretch.
  • DH Jacob Rogers (.242) went 1-for-5 and crushed his first homer with the Smokies, a solo shot in the seventh inning.
  • RHP Fernando Cruz (5.47) earned his second win, tossing 3.0 hitless and scoreless innings of relief, walking three and fanning one batter.

Myrtle Beach was unable to overcome an early deficit and fell at Salem, 5-4.

  • 1B Ben Carhart (.234) finished 1-for-4, plated one (12) and scored once.
  • DH Jordan Hankins (.210) went 2-for-3 with a double (4) and drew a walk.
  • The Pelicans tallied seven doubles in the setback.

South Bend topped Beloit, 2-1. The two teams face off in the series rubber match tonight.

  • RHP Trevor Clifton (4.45) pitched 6.0 scoreless innings, fanning seven to pick up the win.
  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.273) went 2-for-5 with a double (15), a triple (5) and one run scored. He is hitting .458 (22-for-48) with 12 runs scored in 10 August contests.
  • 3B Matt Rose (.250) went 1-for-4 and blasted his first homer with South Bend. He has recorded a hit and an RBI in his first three games with the SB Cubs.
  • 1B Gioskar Amaya (.268) reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk, a triple (2) and an RBI (37). He has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 games.

Eugene fell to Northwest League North leader Everett, 6-1. The Emeralds mustered just five hits.

  • DH Ian Rice (.281) went 1-for-3, drove in one (12) and drew a walk. Rice has picked up six RBI in his last three contests.

  • 1B Jose Paniagua (.275) finished 3-for-5, plated two (23) and scored once.
  • CF Darryl Wilson (.316) also went 3-for-5, belted a triple (2) and scored twice.
  • 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.285) recorded a 2-for-4 day with a double (4), an RBI (22), a walk and three runs scored.

  • LHP Tsuyoshi Wada made his second rehab start with Iowa, throwing 71 pitches in 6.0 innings. He walked none and struck out five.
  • RHP Rafael Soriano (0.00) made his first appearance with Iowa, striking out three batters and surrendering one hit in a scoreless inning of relief.
  • LF Junior Lake (.310) extended his hitting streak to seven games (.458/11-for-24), going 2-for-4 with a third-inning solo home run.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.261) went 2-for-4 with a double (16) and a run scored.

  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.270) went 1-for-4 with the team’s only run.
  • LHP Michael Heesch (1.48) collected his third save of the season, tossing a scoreless ninth inning. He has not allowed a run in his last three appearances (8.2 IP).

  • RF Alex Bautista (.255) went 1-for-4 with his first homer of the season, a two-run shot in the fourth inning that accounted for both of the team’s runs.
  • RHP Dylan Cease has tossed 6.0 scoreless innings across his last two outings. He has allowed just one earned run in 11.2 innings this season, striking out 10 batters and walking four.

Myrtle Beach snapped its losing streak, Eugene rallied for a win, and Mesa secured a victory with a walk-off homer Tuesday. Iowa faltered late, and South Bend’s rally wasn’t enough. Tennessee had the day off and resumes play today. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Myrtle Beach recorded a shutout victory, and Tennessee earned a win in a rain-shortened game Monday, but both Iowa and South Bend couldn’t get it done. Here are some notes from yesterday’s Cubs minor league action:

Iowa dropped the series opener to Reno, 8-3. The I-Cubs belted two homers in the setback.

  • RF Rubi Silva (.279) went 2-for-4 with a solo homer in the second inning and a stolen base. He has driven in eight runs in the last four games.

South Bend split the four-game series with Bowling Green after suffering a 12-8 loss. Five SB-Cubs had multi-hit games, and the team recorded 15 hits in the loss.

  • C Cael Brockmeyer (.324) went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer in the seventh inning, extending his hitting streak to six games (9-for-22/.409).
  • 3B Jesse Hodges (.240) crushed a solo homer in the second inning.
  • 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.236) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. It marked his third consecutive multi-hit game and extended his hitting streak to four games (7-for-16/.438).

Tennessee cruised to a 9-2 victory at Jackson, drawing a season high 12 walks.

  • RHP Felix Pena (1.53) secured the win, giving up two earned runs in 5.2 innings pitched. He struck out eight and walked two.
  • DH Kyle Schwarber (.371) went 3-for-6 with a home run and a double, plating two and scoring twice. It was his third consecutive multi-hit game.
  • C Willson Contreras (.333) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, one RBI, two walks and two runs scored. Contreras had his fourth multi-hit game this season.
  • 3B Ryan Dent (.290) went 3-for-4 and picked up three RBI.

  • CF Jacob Hannemann (.280) went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, a stolen base (6) and two runs. It marked his fifth multi-hit game this season.
  • RF Billy McKinney (.325) also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.
  • C Ben Carthart (.235) hit a two-run double in the fifth inning. Carhart also walked and scored a run.
  • RHP Daury Torrez threw his first quality start to pick up the win, pitching 7.0 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and fanning one batter.

South Bend blanked Lake County 10-0 in the rubber game of the series. The SB Cubs outscored Lake County 26-3 over the final two games.

  • RHP Erick Leal picked up the win after pitching 5.0 scoreless innings, striking out six and walking just one batter.
  • RF Yasiel Balaguert (.188) went 2-for-4 with a triple and a three-run double to go along with one run scored.
  • CF Trey Martin (.267) picked up his sixth multi-hit game this season.
  • SS Gleyber Torres (.275) went 2-for-3 with two RBI, two stolen bases and one run scored.
  • 2B Chesny Young (.340) went 2-for-5, swiped a base and scored twice. Young is currently on an eight-game hitting streak (13-for-31) and has six multi-hit games on the season.
