Cubs Minor League Recap: 7/14/14

One of the Cubs’ top prospects hit for the cycle, helping Daytona to an extra-innings win, and Mesa jumped back into a first-place tie after a successful Monday. Both Tennessee and Kane County dropped games in the late innings, and Iowa had the day off for the Triple-A All-Star Game Tuesday night. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor action:

Tennessee Smokies (13-12)
T-1st Place (–)

Charles Cutler tied the game in the fifth with a two-run, inside-the-park home run, but the Smokies offense couldn’t break the tie, falling 6-5 at home to Jacksonville.

  • Cutler (.335) finished 2-for-4 with two runs, his third homer of the season and two RBI (31).
  • LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.270), 3B Christian Villanueva (.292) and CF Jae-Hoon Ha (.213) all had two hits apiece.
  • Villanueva had two of Tennessee’s five doubles—the remaining three came from SS Addison Russell (.222, 1 2B), 2B Stephen Bruno (.281, 19 2B), and PH Dustin Geiger (.226, 20 2B).
  • RF Jorge Soler (0-for-3, RBI) was named the Southern League Hitter of the Week for the period from July 7-13, hitting .556 (10-for-18) with four runs, two doubles, four homers and eight RBI in six games.

Daytona Cubs (15-8)
1st Place (+0.5)

Albert Almora’s triple in the 13th helped him complete the cycle and lift Daytona over host Juptier, 13-8.

  • With his 5-for-7 night, Almora (.276) became the first Daytona Cub to hit for the cycle since Brett Jackson on June 14, 2010. He also drove in a career-high five runs, beginning when he and SS Marco Hernandez (3-for-7, 3 R, HR, RBI) hit back-to-back homers to lead off the game.
  • 1B Dan Vogelbach (.274) and 3B Jordan Hankins (.250) each added three hits. Vogelbach drove in two (46), while Hankins tallied his second double.
  • LF Bijan Rademacher (.290) went 2-for-5 with a run, his sixth homer and two RBI (35).
  • RF Billy McKinney (.286) and 2B Gioskar Amaya (.272) each had two hits.
  • After RHP Starling Peralta (3.92) blew his third save, allowing three runs over three frames, RHP Zack Godley earned the win with a scoreless 12th inning.

Kane County Cougars (17-7)
1st Place (+1.0)

Visiting Beloit scored two in the ninth inning to beat Kane County, 3-2.

  • Kane County managed just four hits, including a two-run double (12 2B, 21 RBI) from SS David Bote.
  • RHP Daury Torrez (2.81) delivered his ninth quality start (6-1) in 17 tries, going seven innings and allowing no earned runs. He has allowed zero earned runs in four of his last five starts.
  • Torrez was succeeded by RHP Michael Wagner (1-2, 3.51), who surrendered two runs to suffer his first blown save and second loss of the season.

Boise Hawks (17-14)
2nd Place (-2.0)

Boise and Spokane scored all of their combined 17 runs in the first four innings, with host Boise winning, 11-6. C Mark Zagunis became the first Hawk to hit for the cycle since Demond Smith on August 4, 1994, vs. Everett.

  • Zagunis launched his first professional home run in the fourth inning en route to becoming one of two Cubs minor leaguers to hit for the cycle yesterday. He finished 4-for-5 with three runs and four RBI (12). His total hits, runs and RBI all set new professional career highs.
  • 2B Jason Vosler (.286) also notched his first professional home run in his seventh game with Boise, finishing 3-for-4 with a run, the homer and two RBI (5).
  • RF Jeffry Baez (.273) extended his Northwest League-leading hitting streak to 17 games (.366/26-for-71), going 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

Mesa Cubs (10-8)
T-1st Place (–)

Mesa moved into a tie for first place with a 5-1 win at the AZL Giants.

  • DH Alberto Mineo (.362) hit his first homer of the season, finishing 2-for-4.
  • 2B Bryant Flete (.333) singled and drove in two (5).
  • LF Kevonte Mitchell (.250) went 1-for-3 with two runs, a walk, and two stolen bases (3).
  • LHP Carson Sands (1-0, 0.00) struck out two in a scoreless sixth to earn his first professional win in his second game with Mesa.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 7/13/14

The Cubs minor league system had a successful Sunday, with only Iowa taking a loss. Meanwhile, Mesa was rained out. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (51-46)
2nd Place (-0.5)

Iowa managed just three hits in a 5-2 loss to visiting Oklahoma City.

  • 2B Logan Watkins (.277), SS Chris Valaika (.289) and 1B Lars Anderson (.254) all recorded a hit.
  • RHP Dae-Eun Rhee (6.43) allowed one run on three hits and struck out three in three innings of relief.

Tennessee Smokies (13-11)
1st Place (+0.5)

Tennessee used a seven-run fifth-inning to snap a three-game skid and beat visiting Jacksonville, 14-8.

  • RF Jorge Soler (.426) recorded his first career multihomer game, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two home runs and a career-high five RBI (17).
  • 2B Stephen Bruno (.281) went 3-for-5 with two runs, three RBI (28) and one stolen base (5).
  • SS Elliot Soto (.233) and LF Anthony Giansanti (.233) had two hits apiece.
  • RHP Zach Cates (2-1, 2.25) tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory.

Daytona Cubs (14-8)

Daytona won its second-straight game, beating host Jupiter, 6-2.

  • RHP Tayler Scott pitched six scoreless innings to earn the win.
  • RF Billy McKinney (.261) went 1-for-4 with a home run and four RBI (8).
  • C Chadd Krist (.214) went 2-for-3 with a second-inning, two-run homer.
  • RHP Zack Godley (5.01) tossed a scoreless eighth inning.

Kane County Cougars (17-6)

GM 1: Kane County held visiting Beloit to just three hits in a 3-1 victory.

  • RHP Jen-Ho Tseng gave up three hits over seven innings and surrendered just one run to earn the win.
  • DH Kyle Schwarber (.382) and 1B Jacob Rogers (.265) had two hits apiece.

GM 2: Kane County beat Beloit 6-5 to complete the doubleheader sweep.

  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.267) went 2-for-3 with two home runs and a game-high four RBI (15).
  • LHP Michael Heesch (2-0, 3.18) allowed one run on two hits in one inning of relief to earn the win.

Boise Hawks (16-14)

Boise recorded 11 hits in a 6-2 victory at Eugene.

  • 3B Jesse Hodges (.264) and 1B Alex Tomasovich (.275) had two hits apiece.
  • RF Jeffry Baez (.273) extended his hitting streak to a season-high 16 games (.364/24-for-66).

Cubs Minor League Recap: 7/10/14

Of the Cubs minor league affiliates, only Kane County picked up a win Thursday. Mesa had the day off and will resume play Friday. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (49-44)
1st Place (+0.5)

Iowa scored their lone run on a solo shot from 3B Kris Bryant, falling to host Omaha, 7-1.

  • Bryant (.329) led off the seventh with his ninth home run since joining Iowa and 31st of the season. He has hit safely in 18 of his 23 games as an I-Cub.
  • C Rafael Lopez (.280) recorded the first four-hit game of his career, tallying four singles in four at-bats.
  • 1B Logan Watkins (.265) went 1-for-4 with his 11th double of the season off of Omaha’s Tim Collins. The two-bagger was his first extra-base hit off of a lefty this season.

Tennessee Smokies (12-9)
2nd Place (-0.5)

Entering the ninth knotted at four, the visiting Suns out-rallied the Smokies to win, 6-5.

  • RF Jorge Soler (.405) hit his third home run in his last three games, finishing 2-for-4 with a run, a walk and two RBI (12). He has reached base safely in all but one of his 11 games with the Smokies this season.
  • SS Addison Russell (.143) recorded his first two hits with the organization in his third game with Tennessee. His seventh-inning single snapped an initial 0-for-12 skid.
  • 1B Dustin Geiger (.222) finished 2-for-4 with his fourth double in as many games and 18th of the season.

Daytona Cubs (12-7)
T-1st Place (–)

Dunedin jumped ahead with a five-run fourth and never looked back, topping the Cubs in Daytona, 7-4.

  • SS Marco Hernandez (.293) finished 3-for-5 with his 10th double of the season. It marked his 23rd multihit game of the season and his fourth three-hit performance.
  • LF Bijan Rademacher (.285) knocked two doubles in four at-bats, bringing his season total to 16. His two RBI bring him to 32 on the season, the third-highest total on the team.
  • The team went just 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position, but managed to produce four runs from seven hits and four walks.

Kane County Cougars (14-5)
1st Place (+1.5)

The Cougars scored early and often at Quad Cities, tallying three in the top of the first en route to a 9-5 win over the River Bandits.

  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.238) set a season high with eight total bases, including his first homer with Kane County and two doubles (6).
  • 2B Ben Carhart (.283) had his third multihit game in his last four, finishing 3-for-5 with a run and three RBI.
  • CF Jacob Hannemann (.267) went 2-for-5 with his 13th double of the season.
  • SS Carlos Penalver (.224) also notched multiple hits, singling twice and walking while scoring two runs.
  • RF Kevin Brown (.364) launched his second homer in three games since being promoted to Kane County.
  • RHP Jose Arias (1.82) recorded the final two outs for his second save of the year.

Boise Hawks (14-13)

Boise pitching allowed nine runs on 19 hits and two errors as the Hawks fell, 9-3, at home.

  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.275), C Mark Zagunis (.366) and 1B Alex Tomasovich (.255) recorded two hits apiece.
  • Eight of Boise’s nine hitters recorded a hit. 2B Giuseppe Pappacio (.197), the lone hitless Hawk, also contributed offensively with a sacrifice fly in the third.
  • RHP Josh Davis (1-1, 7.11) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four earned runs in 0.2 frames.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 7/9/14

Iowa claimed an extra-innings victory, Boise continued its winning streak and Daytona took the first game in the doubleheader Wednesday. Kane County couldn’t drive in runners and Mesa was defeated again. Meanwhile, Tennessee had the day off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (49-43)

Logan Watkins hit a 14th-inning, solo home run to lift the Cubs over host Omaha, 2-1. Watkins’ blast was the only hit the I-Cubs recorded in their last 10 innings of the game.

  • Watkins (.265) finished the game going 1-for-6 with the home run.
  • LF Josh Vitters (.217) went 1-for-5 with a double (12) and one RBI (30).
  • LHP Eric Jokisch finished with a career-high 11 strikeouts while recording his 11th quality start, giving up one earned run over seven innings.
  • LHP Michael Heesch (1-0, 0.00) earned the win in his Triple-A debut, tossing three scoreless innings.
  • LHP Zac Rosscup (2.61) picked up his third save of the season.

Omaha’s Brian Bocock hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat Iowa, 7-6.

  • RF Brett Jackson (.213) went 1-for-4 with a second-inning, two-run homer.
  • DH Ryan Kalish (.226) went 2-for-3 with two runs, a double (7), and a sixth-inning, three-run clout.
  • 3B Kris Bryant (.351) went 1-for-4 before being ejected in the eighth inning by the home plate umpire for arguing balls and strikes. It was Bryant’s first professional ejection.

Tennessee Smokies (12-8)

Tennessee held host Birmingham to just four hits in a 7-3 victory.

  • C Luis Flores (.286) went 1-for-3 with two walks, a double (2) and a game-high three RBI (5).

  • Boise has scored 10 or more runs in three-straight games. It’s the first time they have achieved that feat since July of 2010.

The Mesa Cubs committed three more miscues in a 6-4 loss to the visiting AZL Indians. Mesa has 15 errors in their last three games.

Iowa continued its winning streak, Tennessee hurled a shutout, Boise racked up another victory and Mesa rallied for a win Wednesday. Meanwhile, errors cost Daytona, and Kane County couldn’t prevent a few big innings. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa won its fifth-straight game, beating visiting Omaha, 4-3.

  • LHP Chris Rusin gave up one earned run over seven innings to secure the win.
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.310) went 2-for-4 with a run, a triple (11) and one RBI (40) to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. He’s batting .469 (23-for-49) with four doubles, two triples, two homers, nine RBI and 11 runs scored during his streak.
  • 3B Kris Bryant (.345) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, a double (5), an RBI (18) and one stolen base (1).
  • RHP Blake Parker (1.44) earned his 18th save of the year.

Tennessee Smokies (10-4)

Tennessee held visiting Montgomery to just three hits for a 7-0 victory.

  • C Luis Flores (.261) went 1-for-3 with a fifth-inning, solo home run.
  • LF Kevin Brown (.500) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double (1) and two RBI (4).
  • CF Jae-Hoon Ha (.218) went 2-for-4 with a run, a double (10) and a game-high three RBI (25).
  • RHP Pierce Johnson got the win in his return from the disabled list, pitching 7.1 scoreless innings and striking out five. Johnson hasn’t allowed a run in his last two starts, spanning 11.1 innings.

Daytona committed three errors in a 4-3 loss at Brevard County.

  • RF Brett Jackson (.205) went 2-for-3 with a game-high three RBI (11) and a triple (3).

GM 2: Brett Jackson hit a walkoff, three-run homer in the eighth inning to lift Iowa over Omaha, 7-4.

Boise Hawks (8-11)

Boise used a 19-hit attack to rout host Tri-City, 14-3. The 19 hits by the Hawks were their most since recording 20 hits vs. Yakima in 2009.

  • LHP Tyler Ihrig gave up two earned runs over six innings, striking out five and walking none to secure the win.
  • Jesse Hodges (.215) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two home runs and a career-high six RBI (12). The six RBI are the most by a Boise player since Kyler Burke had six vs. Vancouver during the 2008 season.
  • 1B Daniel Canela (.323) reached base five times, going a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored, a walk and one RBI (8).

Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/30/14

Iowa brought the big bats and came away with a walk-off win, but Tennessee lost in walk-off fashion while Boise’s opponents scored some big runs late on Monday. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (44-38)
1st Place (+0.5)

Josh Vitters hit a walk-off single with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to lift Iowa over Omaha, 7-6.

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.333) went 2-for-4 with an eighth inning grand slam.
  • DH Manny Ramirez (.375) went 3-for-4 with a seventh-inning, two-run homer.
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara went 1-for-4 with a run scored to extend his hitting streak to nine games. He’s batting .474 (18-for-38) with four doubles, a triple, two homers, eight RBI, and 10 runs scored during his streak. He was named the PCL Player of the Week for June 23-29, batting a league-best .517 last week with six multi-hit games.
  • RHP Marcus Hatley (2-1, 2.27) earned the win after tossing a scoreless top of the 10th inning.

Montgomery tallied a run in the top of the 10th inning to beat Tennessee, 3-2.

  • SS Elliot Soto (.185) recorded Tennessee’s lone multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double (4) and one RBI (6).
  • LHP Jeff Lorick (5.21) and RHP Lendy Castillo (2.74) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
  • RHP Matt Loosen was dealt a no-decision despite tossing his fifth quality start of the campaign.
  • Right-hander Dae-Eun Rhee has been named the league’s Pitcher of the Week for the time period between June 23-29. Rhee posted a 2-0 record and 1.42 ERA (2 ER in 12.2 IP), adding 13 strikeouts while only walking three.

Boise Hawks (7-11)
4th Place (-4.0)

Host Tri-City scored nine runs over the final two innings to beat Boise, 11-5.

  • CF Rashad Crawford (.259) went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a team-high three RBI (8).
  • LF Mark Zagunis (.333) and 3B Jesse Hodges (.183) each recorded two hits apiece.
  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.188) went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and his eighth stolen base of the year.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/26/14

In a full slate of minor league games Thursday, Tennessee and Kane County both pitched shutouts, Mesa secured a victory, and Iowa split a doubleheader. On the down side, Daytona gave up a late lead, and Boise’s bats were quiet. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (41-37)
2nd Place (-1.5)

Game 1: Iowa won the first game of the road doubleheader, topping the Sky Sox, 7-3.

  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.294) led off the ninth with his ninth homer, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs, a double (20) and two RBI (35).
  • CF Ryan Kalish (.233) had his first three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4 with a run, his fourth double, two RBI (10) and two stolen bases (6).
  • 1B Chris Valaika (.306) added two singles, a run and his 37th RBI.
  • RHP Kyle Hendricks tossed his fourth-consecutive quality start, and 10th in 15 starts this season. He pitched six innings of two-run ball, striking out four, to pick up the victory.

Game 2: Player/coach Manny Ramirez made his season debut with Iowa, going 0-for-4 and reaching on an error as the I-Cubs fell in the nightcap at Colorado Springs, 7-6.

  • SS Javier Baez (.237) went 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles (13) and his team-leading 44th RBI.
  • Iowa totaled six doubles on the night—two from Baez and one each from 3B Kris Bryant (1-for-4, RBI), PH Ryan Kalish (1-for-3, R), C Eli Whiteside (1-for-3) and Alcantara (1-for-4, R).

Tennessee Smokies (6-2)
1st Place (+1.5)

Tennessee blanked host Jackson for a 4-0 victory.

  • RHP Corey Black pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, striking out three and picking up his third win of the season.
  • Five Smokies recorded two hits apiece—2B Stephen Bruno (.300), 3B Christian Villanueva (.364), RF Rubi Silva (.255), LF Jonathan Mota (.192) and SS Elliot Soto (.152). Villanueva has three-straight multihit games (7-for-13).
  • DH Charles Cutler (.322) hit a double (9) and knocked in a run (27) in four tries. He had the Smokies’ only extra-base hit.
  • Following Black’s 5.1 scoreless frames, LHP Hunter Cervenka (2.87) and RHP P.J. Francescon (3.12) completed the shutout, throwing two and 1.2 innings, respectively.

Daytona Cubs (5-3)
T-1st Place (–)

RHP Michael Jensen (L, 4-3) allowed visiting Dunedin to take the lead with two earned runs in the ninth, and Daytona lost, 5-3.

  • SS Marco Hernandez (.276) was the only Cub to record multiple hits, including his eighth double.
  • Team RBI leaders 1B Dan Vogelbach (.271, 35 RBI) and CF Albert Almora (.254, 34 RBI) each added one to their season totals.

Kane County Cougars (5-2)
T-2nd Place (-0.5)

RHP Daury Torrez tossed eight scoreless innings in a 5-0 victory over Wisconsin.

  • Torrez struck out seven and gave up five hits over eight innings in the win.
  • C Kyle Schwarber (.455), C Ben Carhart (.293) and 1B Jacob Rogers (.263) each went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Schwarber and Carhart hit their third and 15th doubles, respectively.
  • CF Trey Martin (.231) doubled in four tries and knocked in two (22).
  • RHP James Pugliese (1.24) polished off the win with a perfect ninth inning.

Boise Hawks (5-9)
4th Place (-4.0)

Boise managed just five hits in a 10-0 loss to visiting Hillsboro.

  • CF Rashad Crawford (.243) hit his second double and his third triple of the season.
  • DH Justin Marra (.325) went 2-for-3 with his fifth double. He leads the team with eight extra-base hits.
  • RHPs Greyfer Eregua (6.00) and David Garner (1.50) finished the game with four scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and fanning six.

Mesa Cubs (4-1)
1st Place (+0.5)

Mesa improved to a league-best 4-1, topping the visiting Athletics, 7-4.

  • DH Jorge Soler hit his first homer, a two-run shot, and finished 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. In three games this season, he is 5-for-10 (.500) with three runs, two doubles, a homer and four RBI.
  • CF Charcer Burks (.524) added a solo shot in the eighth. In five games, he is 11-for-21 (.524) with nine runs, four doubles, a triple, a homer, seven RBI and four stolen bases.
  • LHP Andin Diaz (1-0, 0.00) earned the win in his first appearance, spinning three scoreless innings and striking out two.
