Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/11/14

Tennessee scored some late runs to earn a victory, and Kane County battled back to salvage a doubleheader split Wednesday. Iowa took a loss while Daytona was rained out. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (33-30)
3rd Place (-1.0)

Fresno scored seven runs in the first three innings to rout the visiting Iowa Cubs, 10-1.

  • 1B Josh Vitters (.215) snapped a three-game hitless skid, going 3-for-4 with his 21st RBI of the year.
  • LF Ryan Kalish (.214) posted his third multihit game, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases (3).
  • LHP Zac Rosscup (2.25) struck out the side in the seventh inning in his third outing as part of a major league rehab assignment.
  • LHP Jeffry Antigua (3.06) scattered two hits over three scoreless innings of relief.

Tennessee Smokies (31-34)
2nd Place (-11.0)

Tennessee scored a late run in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat visiting Mississippi, 3-2.

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.359) extended his hitting streak to six games (.458/11-for-24), going 2-for-4 with his Southern League-leading 56th RBI.
  • RHP P.J. Francescon (7-4, 3.41) worked a scoreless eighth to pick up his team-leading seventh win.
  • RHP Armando Rivero (1.71) converted his 10th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

Kane County Cougars (44-22)
1st Place (+8.5)

GM 1: Kane County managed just two hits in a 2-1 loss in the first game of a doubleheader at Peoria.

  • 3B Jordan Hankins (.313) went 1-for-3 with a double (14) and his 27th RBI of the season.
  • CF Ryan Sweeney (.000) went 0-for-3 in the second game of his major league rehab assignment.
  • RHP Michael Wagner (3.93) worked a scoreless inning. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last three relief appearances (6.0 IP).

GM 2: Kane County avoided the doubleheader sweep with a 4-3 victory over Peoria.

  • 3B Jordan Hankins (.319) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI (28).
  • CF Jacob Hannemann (.236), SS Carlos Penalver (.245) and DH Ben Carhart (.295) all had two hits apiece.
  • RHP Tyler Bremer (2.32) struck out the side in the seventh inning to convert his eighth save.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/9/14

Iowa pounded out 17 runs for an easy win, while Kane County wrapped up the first-half home schedule in fine fashion Monday. Tennessee lost in extras, and Daytona’s bats sputtered. Here are the highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (33-28)

Christian Villanueva and Rafael Lopez each belted grand slams to lead the Iowa Cubs to a 17-2 demolition over host Fresno.

  • LHP Tsuyoshi Wada picked up the win, giving up one earned run over six innings pitched.
  • SS Javier Baez (.239) kicked off the scoring with a first-inning solo homer. He tied a career-high with four runs and is now hitting .364 (8-for-22) with two home runs and six RBI in seven June games.
  • C Rafael Lopez (.313) went 2-for-5 with a ninth-inning grand slam and a career-high seven RBI (7).
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.228) reached base four times, going 2-for-5 with two walks, a grand slam and a season-high five RBI (26).
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.275) registered his fourth game with at least three hits, going 3-for-6 with two runs scored.
  • 1B Logan Watkins (.304), CF Ryan Kalish (.189) and RF Brett Jackson (.202) all had two hits apiece.
  • Iowa set season highs in runs (17) and walks (11) while tying a season-high in hits (17).
  • The last time Iowa recorded two grand slams in one game was August 12, 2006, at Memphis, when Micah Hoffpauir and Lou Montanez turned the trick.

Tennessee Smokies (30-34)

Jacksonville’s Alex Burg hit a walk-off 10th inning home run to beat the Smokies, 8-7.

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.357) homered for the third-straight day, going 2-for-5 with his Southern League-leading 22nd blast of the season. Bryant has five home runs in nine June games after clubbing 12 in 29 May games.
  • Bryant was named the Southern League Hitter of the Week for June 2-8, his second-consecutive weekly award and third this season. Bryant batted .417 (10-for-24) with seven runs, three doubles, three homers, five RBI and six walks in seven games during the stretch.
  • SS Elliot Soto (.184), C Charlie Cutler (.327), 1B Dustin Geiger (.226), LF Anthony Giansanti (.245) and 2B Jeudy Valdez (.236) all had two hits apiece.

Daytona Cubs (25-37)
5th Place (-17.5)

Daytona managed just six hits in a 2-0 loss at Clearwater.

  • SS Marco Hernandez (.281) and C Willson Contreras (.282) recorded multihit efforts.
  • LHP Rob Zastryzny fanned a season-high nine, and RHP Stephen Perakslis struck out the side in the eighth inning.

Kane County Cougars (43-21)
1st Place (+8.5)

Kane County wrapped up its first-half home schedule with a 2-1 victory over Cedar Rapids.

  • 1B Jacob Rogers (.244) and SS Daniel Lockhart (.275) drove in Kane County’s runs.
  • LHP Michael Heesch (1-0, 4.91) tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first win of the year.
  • RHP James Pugliese (1.23) fanned five over 2.2 perfect relief innings to record his fourth hold.
  • RHP Tyler Bremer (2.40) worked a spotless ninth to convert his seventh save of the campaign.

Iowa continued its run of day game success Sunday, but Tennessee and Daytona couldn’t hold on late in their games, and Kane County had its winning streak snapped . Here are the highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa improved to 18-3 in day games this season with a 3-0 victory over visiting Colorado Springs.

  • SS Javier Baez (.230) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and his 29th RBI of the season.
  • 1B Chris Valaika (.294) batted cleanup and went 2-for-4 with one RBI (29).
  • RHP Dallas Beeler posted his fourth-straight quality start, going seven innings and striking out five. Iowa leads the PCL with 37 quality starts.
  • LHP Zac Rosscup (2.45) tossed a scoreless eighth in the second game of his rehab assignment.
  • RHP Blake Parker (1.08) worked a scoreless ninth to earn his 13th save of the campaign.

Tennessee Smokies (30-33)

Jacksonville scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Smokies, 6-5.

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.356) homered for the second-straight day, as he went 2-for-4 with his Southern League-leading 21st blast of the season. He also leads the league with 54 RBI.
  • 1B Dustin Geiger (.222) went 1-for-4 with a ninth-inning solo homer.
  • RHPs Lendy Castillo (4.50), Zach Cates (0.00) and Tony Zych (5.00) combined to toss four scoreless innings of relief.

Daytona Cubs (25-36)

Clearwater scored five runs in the seventh inning to defeat visiting Daytona, 8-7.

  • CF Albert Almora (.250) and SS Marco Hernandez (.276) each drove in two runs.
  • 2B Gioskar Amaya (.275) went 1-for-3 with a run, a walk and two RBI (19).
  • LHP Andrew McKirahan (0.95) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Kane County Cougars (42-21)

Kane County had its four-game winning streak snapped, falling at home to Cedar Rapids, 3-2.

Tennessee, Daytona and Kane County all racked up victories Wednesday while Iowa had the afternoon off. The Cubs organization is a combined 8-0 over the last two days. Here are the highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Tennessee Smokies (28-31)

Tennessee won its second-straight game, beating visiting Birmingham, 4-1.

  • RHP Joe Gardner picked up the win, giving up one earned run over 6.2 innings, fanning five and walking none.
  • 3B Kris Bryant (.348) went 0-for-3 to snap his seven-game hitting streak. He walked once and has now reached base safely in 20 of his last 21 games.
  • 1B Dustin Geiger (.234) went 1-for-3 with a fourth-inning, two-run homer.
  • LF John Andreoli (.231) went 1-for-3 while swiping his league-leading 27th and 28th stolen bases.
  • RHP Arodys Vizcaino (2.61) worked a scoreless ninth inning for his first save of the season.

Daytona Cubs (23-34)

Daytona scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Jupiter, 4-2.

  • LHP Rob Zastryzny gave up two earned runs over five innings, fanning four.
  • RHP Jose Rosario (3-4, 4.10) earned his third win in relief, spinning three scoreless innings and fanning five.
  • All-Star LHP Andrew McKirahan (1.00) fanned two in a scoreless ninth for the save (5).
  • SS Marco Hernandez (.261) ripped a two-run double in the eighth, bringing his RBI total to 23.

Kane County Cougars (39-20)
1st Place (+7.5)

Kane County beat Clinton on a walk-off fielder’s choice in the 10th inning, edging the LumberKings, 5-4.

  • CF Jacob Hannemann went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two doubles (7).
  • 2B Daniel Lockhart (.264) and 1B Jacob Rogers (.247) each recorded two hits apiece.
  • Four Kane County players were named to the Midwest League Western Division All-Star Team: C Will Remillard, INF Jordan Hankins, RHP Jose Arias, and yesterday’s starter and the Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May, RHP Paul Blackburn.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/3/14

All three Cubs minor league affiliates that saw action picked up wins Tuesday. Kane County had the day off and returns to the field Wednesday. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s games.

Iowa Cubs (30-26)
T-1st Place (–)

Iowa beat the Sounds, 4-2, to split the four-game series in Nashville, despite being outhit 11-6.

  • LHP Tsuyoshi Wada struck out five and gave up just one earned run over six innings to pick up the win and earn his seventh quality start of the year.
  • RHP Carlos Pimentel (3.97) threw 1.2 scoreless frames to earn the hold (1), and RHP Blake Parker allowed one run on his way to a four-out save (11).
  • LF Matt Szczur (.244) went 2-for-4 with a run and his eighth stolen base.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.230) hit his 16th double in the fifth and drove in his 21st run.
  • CF Ryan Kalish (.167) had an RBI single in Iowa’s three-run sixth, his only hit in four tries.

Tennessee Smokies (27-31)
2nd Place (-11.5)

The Smokies won for the first time since May 25, snapping an eight-game skid by blanking visiting Birmingham, 3-0.

  • RHP Matt Loosen gave up just four hits and no earned runs over six innings, striking out seven, to pick up the win.
  • 3B Kris Bryant (.353) clubbed a two-run homer in the fourth. Bryant leads the league with a .353 average, 19 home runs, 51 RBIs, 50 runs, 73 hits and 145 total bases. He also leads the Southern League in OBP (.460), slugging (.700) and OPS (1.160).
  • RF Rubi Silva (.240) and DH Anthony Giansanti (.238) notched two singles apiece.
  • In relief of Loosen’s third quality start, LHP Hunter Cervenka (1.61) earned his fourth hold with two scoreless frames, and RHP Armando Rivero (1.86) retired the side in the ninth for the save (9).
  • Bryant and Rivero were among six Smokies named to the Southern League North Division All-Star team. The other Smokies honored were LF John Andreoli, RHP Corey Black, SS Stephen Bruno and C Rafael Lopez, who will not play as a result of his promotion to Triple-A Iowa.

Daytona Cubs (22-34)
5th Place (-17.5)

Daytona held off a pesky Mets offense to win 6-5 at St. Lucie, despite being outhit 11-6.

  • RHP Starling Peralta (3-1, 3.29) relieved LHP Austin Kirk and earned his third win, allowing two earned runs over four innings.
  • RHP Stephen Perakslis (5.34) threw 1.2 scoreless innings for his first save.
  • 1B Dan Vogelbach (.267) went 2-for-3 with two runs, a double (11) and his 20th RBI.
  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.193) tallied his fourth multi-RBI game, going 0-for-3 with two walks and two RBI (24).
  • Four Daytona players were named Florida State League North Division All-Stars: 2B Gioskar Amaya, LHP Andrew McKirahan, RHP Felix Pena and LF Bijan Rademacher.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/1/14

Extra-base hits boosted Iowa to a win, and Kane County delivered a shutout victory Sunday. Tennessee couldn’t stop its losing streak, while Daytona’s bats were kept quiet. Here are the highlights from yesterday’s minor league action.

Iowa Cubs (29-25)

  • LHP Eric Jokisch gave up no earned runs over six innings, fanning five to get the win.
  • SS Javier Baez (.220) left in the bottom of the sixth inning after being hit by a pitch in the right wrist earlier in the game. He initially stayed in the game after being plunked in the third inning, and went on to steal both second and third base.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.235) went 2-for-4 with a fifth-inning, two-run homer.
  • PH Brett Jackson (.216) hit his third homer of the season, a pinch-hit, two-run shot in the seventh.
  • LHP Jeffry Antigua (3.29) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to earn the hold (1).
  • RHP Blake Parker earned his 10th save in 10 opportunities, striking out the final two batters of the game.

Tennessee Smokies (26-30)
2nd Place (-12.5)

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.348) continued his torrid stretch with a two-run homer in the first, finishing 1-for-4 with a run, a walk, his 18th homer and three RBI (49). Bryant leads the league with a .348 average, 18 home runs, 49 RBIs, 48 runs, 70 hits and 139 total bases. He also leads the Southern League in OBP (.452), slugging (.692) and OPS (1.143).
  • SS Jeudy Valdez (.236) knocked two singles, scored the team’s third run and recorded one of Tennessee’s three stolen bases on the day. Others to swipe a bag included CF Jae-Hoon Ha (.215, 3 SB) and RF John Andreoli (.240, league-leading 26 SB).
  • RHP Tony Zych (1-3, 5.25) allowed an unearned run in the eighth inning, suffering his third loss.

Daytona Cubs (20-34)
5th Place (-17.5)

Daytona managed just four singles in a 6-0 setback at St. Lucie.

  • RHP Tayler Scott was handed the loss despite giving up just one earned run in 5.1 innings and striking out two.
  • In addition to the four singles, Daytona hitters reached once on an error, three times by walks and twice after being hit by pitches.

Kane County Cougars (38-17)
1st Place (+7.5)

Kane County blanked host Peoria despite being outhit 6-5. The Cougars won by a final score of 2-0.

  • RHP Justin Amlung allowed four hits and no earned runs while fanning eight and walking none, lowering his ERA to 1.54 and his WHIP to .88, both good for second in the Midwest League.
  • 3B Jordan Hankins (.288) recorded his 11th double and added a single to finish 2-for-4.
  • DH Ben Carhart (.290) recorded the third triple of his career and his first of the season.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 5/29/14

There were quite a few bright spots in an 0-5 day for the Cubs minor league affiliates Thursday. Top prospect Javier Baez continued his rebound with a multihit effort, Arismendy Alcantara hit his seventh triple of the season, and Kris Bryant clubbed his league-leading 16th home run. Here are the highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (27-24)
T-1st Place (–)

GM 1: Redbirds closer David Aardsma held the I-Cubs scoreless in the top of the seventh inning to close out a 2-1 victory for Memphis in the suspended game from Wednesday night.

  • SS Javier Baez (.229) recorded Iowa’s lone multihit game, going 2-for-3.
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.282) went 1-for-3 with an RBI (26) and his team-leading seventh triple.

GM 2: Memphis LHP Tim Cooney still had a no-hitter going with two outs in the top of the ninth inningbefore Alcantara spoiled his bid at history with a single to left field. The I-Cubs fell, 4-0.

  • Alcantara (.282) extended his hitting streak to five games with the two-out single.
  • RHP Alberto Cabrera (5.48) struck out two hitters in 2.0 scoreless innings of work.

Tennessee Smokies (26-27)
2nd Place (-10.5)

Tennessee lost its fourth straight one-run game to host Huntsville, as they fell 4-3.

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.347) went 1-for-4 and clubbed his Southern League-leading 16th homer of the campaign. Bryant has now homered in three of his last four games and is hitting .406 (41-for-101) with 28 runs, six doubles, 11 home runs and 33 RBI in 27 May games.
  • 2B Wes Darvill (.232) and 1B Charles Cutler (.330) each had two hits apiece.
  • RHP Joe Gardner has allowed just one run on three hits in two starts with the Smokies (11.2 IP).

Daytona Cubs (20-31)

Visiting Palm Beach recorded 11 hits in an 8-1 victory over Daytona.

  • DH Chadd Krist (.226) recorded Daytona’s lone multihit game, going 2-for-4.
  • RF Bijan Rademacher (.315) went 1-for-2 with a walk and his 12th double of the year.
  • LF Zeke DeVoss (.189) went 1-for-2 with a walk and drove in his sixth run of the campaign.

Kane County Cougars (36-18)
1st Place (+6.5)

Kane County had its four-game winning streak snapped in a 5-0 loss at Clinton.

  • DH Ben Carhart (.297) reached base four times, going a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk.
  • C Cael Brockmeyer (.350) posted his second three-hit game of the year, going 3-for-4.
  • 1B Jacob Rogers (.246) went 1-for-4 and has now hit safely in five of his last six games.

The Cubs minor league affiliates had a rough day yesterday, going 1-3 overall. But the Kane County squad extended its winning streak to four games, and Kris Bryant continued to mash at Double-A Tennessee. Here are the highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

GM 1: Memphis scored a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Iowa, 1-0.

  • CF Arismendy Alcantara (.282) went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to four games.
  • RHP Dallas Beeler was dealt the loss despite tossing his second-career complete game. He owns a1.35 ERA (2 ER/13.1 IP) over his last two starts.

GM 2: The second game of Iowa’s doubleheader at Memphis was suspended in the sixth inning due to rain. The game will resume today with Iowa trailing, 2-1.

Tennessee Smokies (26-26)
2nd Place (-9.5)

Huntsville recorded its third-straight, walk-off win over Tennessee with a 2-1 victory in 11 innings.

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.349) reached base five times, going a perfect 4-for-4 with a run, a walk, a double (14) and his league-leading 15th homer of the campaign. He’s hitting .412 (40-for-97) with 27 runs, six doubles, 10 home runs and 32 RBI in 26 May games.
  • RHP Arodys Vizcaino (3.24) struck out two hitters in a scoreless eighth inning of work.

  • C Willson Contreras (.267) posted his sixth multihit game in his last seven, going 2-for-4 with two RBI (11). He has raised his average 76 points over the last seven games (.191 AVG on May 19).
  • 2B Gioskar Amaya (.308) went 2-for-4 with his sixth double of the campaign.
  • RHP Stephen Perakslis (5.47) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

Kane County Cougars (36-17)

Kane County won its fourth-straight game, beating host Clinton, 7-1.

  • 2B Daniel Lockhart (.251) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and his 10th double of the year.
  • CF Trey Martin (.208) posted his second-straight multihit game, going 3-for-4 with a run, a double (5) and one RBI (17).

Daytona continued its hot streak with another win Tuesday, while Kane County padded its lead in the Midwest League’s Western Division. Tennessee dropped an extra-inning game, and Iowa was rained out. Here are the highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa pounded out a season-high 12 runs on 17 hits, beating visiting Memphis, 12-3.

  • LHP Eric Jokisch set down 11 of the first 12 hitters he faced before allowing his lone earned run in the fifth. He’s 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA (2 ER/15.1 IP) in his last two starts. Jokisch also went 2-for-3 with a run, a double (1) and two RBI (2) at the dish.
  • SS Javier Baez (.225) extended his hitting streak to 11 games, going 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles (9), three RBI (25) and one stolen base (4). He’s hitting .422 (19-for-45) with eight doubles, four home runs and 14 RBI during the streak. Baez has recorded seven RBI in his last two games.
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.281) reached base five times, going a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs scored, a walk, a double (14), a triple (6), two RBI (25) and one stolen base (10).
  • 1B Chris Valaika (.312) posted Iowa’s other four-hit game, going 4-for-4 with two RBI (26).
  • Javier Baez was named the Pacific Coast League’s Player of the Week for the week of May 19-25. He is the first Cubs position player to win the award since Welington Castillo from June 13-19, 2011. Baez batted .400 (12-for-30) with six doubles, and tied for the PCL lead with three homers and eight RBI to earn the honor.

Tennessee Smokies (26-24)

  • RHP Joel Pineiro turned in his first quality start of the season with Tennessee. Opponents are just 2-for-12 (.167) against him with runners in scoring position and two outs.
  • LHP Jeff Lorick (6.75) struck out two hitters over 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.

3B Jordan Hankins clubbed a pinch-hit solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift Kane County over Peoria, 5-4.

  • RHP Justin Amlung gave up one earned run over five innings, fanning four.
  • Hankins (.287) extended his hitting streak to four games (.545/6-for-11) with the walk-off homer.
  • 1B Jacob Rogers (.243) went 2-for-5 with a second-inning solo home run.
  • RHP James Pugliese (0.89) allowed just two hits in three scoreless innings of relief. He owns a 0.64 ERA (1 ER/14.0 IP) in eight May relief appearances.
  • RHP Jose Arias (1-1, 1.93) allowed one run over 1.2 innings of relief to earn his first win of the season.
