Cubs Minor League Report: 8/21/16

Only Myrtle Beach was able to secure a victory on Sunday, but the other Cubs affiliates weren’t as lucky. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor-league Cubs action.

Iowa Cubs (58-71)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Third Place (-13.0)

Iowa allowed two runs in the first inning and could not rally back, falling 4-1 vs. Memphis.

  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.316) extended his hitting streak to nine games (.400/16-for-40), going 2-for-4. He has 14 RBI during the nine-game stretch.
  • C Tim Federowicz (.286) went 2-for-4 with an RBI (32).
  • RHP Jake Buchanan (4.53 ERA) fanned six, giving up two earned runs in seven innings of work. It’s his third quality start in his last four outings.

Tennessee Smokies (21-33)
Southern League (Double-A)
Fourth Place (-14.0)

The Smokies lost 5-2 vs. Jacksonville, their eighth loss in the last 10 games.

  • 1B David Freitas (.285) went 2-for-3 with a walk, a solo homer (3) and two runs scored.
  • 2B Ian Happ (.272) reached twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk.
  • RF Lane Adams (.236) went 1-for-3 with a double (2) and a walk. He has hit safely in four straight games (.286/4-for-14).

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (35-21)

The Pelicans scored two in the ninth and one in the 10th to walk-off with a 7-6 win over Lynchburg.

  • DH Ian Rice (.248) was 3-for-5 with a game-tying two-run homer (6) in the ninth inning and the game-winning RBI single in the 10th frame. He scored twice and collected three RBI (26).
  • SS Andrew Ely (.248) had his first three-hit game with Myrtle Beach, going 3-for-4 with a RBI (12).
  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.245) went 1-for-3 with a walk, a solo homer (8) and two runs scored.
  • RHP Tommy Nance (3 IP, 1 H, 4 SO) threw three scoreless innings to collect the win. He has not allowed a run in his last five outings (8.1 IP).

South Bend Cubs (36-20)
Midwest League (Single-A)
First Place (+0.5)

South Bend collected 12 hits but left 13 runners on base in a 3-2 setback at Lansing.

  • LF Roberto Caro (.248) went 4-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI (17) and two stolen bases (4). It marked his first four-hit game of the season.
  • C Alberto Mineo (.250) went 2-for-5 with an RBI (22), his third multi-hit game in his last four contests.
  • RF Eddy Martinez (.259) was 2-for-4 with a double (23).
  • RHP Greyfer Eregua (3 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) recorded his third straight outing of at least three innings. He has not allowed an earned run in his last five outings (13.2 IP).

Eugene Emeralds (17-7)
Northwest League (Short-Season A)
First Place (+3.0)

Eugene lost its second straight game, registering just two hits in a 4-1 setback vs. Everett.

  • 2B Trent Giambrone (.308) collected both of the team’s hits, going 2-for-3 with a solo homer (3). He has hit safely in six straight games (.571/12-for-21).
  • RHP Erling Moreno (0.45 ERA) gave up one earned run in five innings. It’s the first run he’s allowed in 20 innings with the Emeralds this season.

Cubs Minor League Report: 7/15/16

South Bend split its doubleheader Thursday while Eugene and Mesa secured victories. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor league Cubs action.

Iowa Cubs (41-51)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Third Place (-12.0)

The I-Cubs returned from the All Star Break and lost a one-run game to Las Vegas, 3-2.

  • RHP Joe Nathan (1 IP, 2 SO) made his first rehab appearance at Triple-A.
  • RF Mark Zagunis (.281) went 2 for 4 with an RBI (17).
  • 2B-LF Juan Perez (.255) was 2 for 2 with a run scored and a stolen base (10).
  • 1B Dan Vogelbach (.311) went 1 for 4 and added his organization-leading 61st RBI. He is riding a seven-game hitting streak.

Tennessee Smokies (9-11)
Southern League (Double-A)
Fourth Place (-3.5)

The Smokies dropped the series-opening contest to host Montgomery, 6-1.

  • 2B Ian Happ (.371) tallied his 10th multi-hit game at Double-A (out of 18 games with an at bat) by going 2 for 4.
  • LF Bijan Rademacher (.298) went 2 for 4.
  • 1B Ben Carhart was 1 for 4 with a double (4), the lone extra-base hit for Tennessee.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (11-10)

First Place (+1.0)

Myrtle Beach could not take advantage of a quality start and lost to Frederick, 4-3.

  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.227) and DH Erick Castillo (.237) both had two hits. Castillo also had an RBI (3).
  • 1B David Bote (.291) reached three times, going 1 for 2 with two walks. He also scored a pair of runs.
  • 3B Jason Vosler (.269) went 1 for 4 with a double (25) and a run. His 25 doubles are tied for third place in the Carolina League.
  • Trevor Clifton (3.23 ERA) registered his fourth quality start of the season with a six-strikeout effort across six innings. He allowed three earned runs.

South Bend Cubs (14-7)

The SB-Cubs split their doubleheader at Clinton. South Bend was held scoreless for 13 straight innings on the day before erupting for five runs in the seventh inning of the second game to top Clinton, 5-4.

  • Preston Morrison (2.40 ERA) fanned six in 5.1 innings, giving up one earned run. He extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 30.1 IP before allowing a pair of runs in the third inning. It is his first loss since June 3.
  • 1B P.J. Higgins (.283) went 3 for 4 with a double (21), two RBI (27) and a run in the second game.
  • 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.324) combined to go 3 for 6 with a run between the two contests.
  • CF Donnie Dewees (.273) was 2 for 4 with a double (15), RBI (50) and a run in Game Two.
  • RHP Dillon Maples (0.2 IP, 1 BB) notched his second save of the season in Game Two. He has not allowed a hit or a run in 3.2 IP over four appearances with South Bend.

Eugene Emeralds (18-9)

The Emeralds snapped their three-game losing streak by topping Tri-City, 4-2.

  • 3B Wladimir Galindo (.220) went 2 for 4 with two doubles (5) and two RBI (13). It’s his third multi-RBI game of the season.
  • LF Kevonte Mitchell (.207) was 1 for 4 with two RBI (8).
  • CF Robert Garcia (.291) went 2 for 5 with a stolen base (4). He has a hit in six of his last seven games.
  • Jose Paulino (0.64 ERA) gave up one earned run in six innings, fanning eight. He has allowed only two earned runs over 28.0 IP (five starts) so far this season. He has fanned 30 and has walked only two batters.
  • RHP Jared Cheek (1 IP, 1 SO) has converted all five save opportunities this year.

Mesa Cubs (9-10)

  • SS Isaac Paredes (.269) was 4 for 4 with two runs scored and a stolen base (1). He is 6 for 8 over his last two games.
  • C Jhonny Pereda (.231) went 1 for 4 with a triple (1). He also knocked in three runs (6) and scored a run.
  • 1B Kevin Zamudio (.241) and CF Zach Davis (.250) both went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
  • Javier Assad has not allowed an earned run in three of his four starts this season.
  • RHP Ho-young Son (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 SO) earned the win in his first professional pitching appearance since playing 65 games as an infielder with Mesa and Eugene in 2014-15.

Cubs Minor League Report: 4/19/16

Only Tennessee picked up a win Tuesday, as Iowa fell behind early, Myrtle Beach lost in walk-off fashion, and South Bend left too many on base. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s Cubs minor-league action:

Fourth Place (-4.0)

Iowa fell behind 6-0 after three innings and could not claw back, falling 7-5 at New Orleans.

  • CF Albert Almora (.324) went 3 for 4 with a run scored, an RBI (4) and a stolen base (1). He has hit safely in five straight games (8 for 19).
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.262) went 3 for 5 with a triple (1), a run scored and a stolen base (3).
  • 1B Dan Vogelbach (.405) reached base three times, going 1 for 3 with a double (4), two walks and two runs scored. He has hit safely in 10 of 11 games and has a .500 OBP in 44 plate appearances.
  • C Willson Contreras (.421) scored a run in his fifth straight game, going 1 for 3 with a walk and an RBI (5).

Tennessee Smokies (6-7)
Southern League (Double-A)
T-Second Place (-3.0)

The Smokies tallied nine runs on just seven hits in a 9-3 win over visiting Montgomery. The Smokies have won back-to-back contests for the first time this season.

  • DH Bijan Rademacher (.452) led the offense, going 2 for 4 with two homers (4) and four RBI, including a three-run shot in the fourth inning. Earlier in the week, Rademacher was named Southern League Player of the Week for April 7-17.
  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.182) reached three times, going 1 for 2 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI (2).
  • 2B Chesny Young (.262) went 1 for 3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases (5), his second straight game with two steals.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (6-7)

Myrtle Beach blew a three-run, eighth-inning lead, falling in walk-off fashion in the ninth, 6-5, at Winston-Salem. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Pelicans.

  • RHP Jonathan Martinez (2.50 ERA) gave up two earned runs in six innings, striking out two in the no-decision.
  • SS Gleyber Torres (.130) went 1 for 4 with his first homer of the season, a solo shot in the first.
  • 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.278) also recorded his first longball, going 2 for 4 with a solo homer.
  • 3B Jason Vosler (.341) added a multi-hit effort, going 2 for 4 with a run scored. It extended his hitting streak to eight games (.433/13 for 30).

South Bend Cubs (6-6)
Midwest League (Single-A)
T-Fourth Place (-2.5)

South Bend collected 12 hits but just one run in a 12-1 setback at home vs. Bowling Green.

  • 3B Andrew Ely (.270) went 3 for 4 with a double (1), in his second straight multi-hit game.
  • RF Daniel Spingola (.394) extended his hitting streak to four games (9 for 18), going 3 for 5.
  • DH P.J. Higgins (.278) went 2 for 4 with a run scored and a walk.
  • C Ian Rice (.400) also went 2 for 4.

Cubs Minor League Report: 4/17/16

Both Myrtle Beach and South Bend were victorious in one-run games, but Tennessee gave up the lead late in a losing effort Sunday. Iowa was rained out. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor-league action.

The Smokies allowed two runs in the top of the ninth, falling at home to Montgomery, 5-3.

  • SS Carlos Penalver (.171) went 2 for 4 with two RBI (4).
  • 1B Victor Caratini (.194) added a multi-hit effort, going 2 for 4 with a double (2), a run scored and a walk.
  • LHP Gerardo Concepcion (2 IP, 1 H, 1 SO) tossed two scoreless innings of relief. He’s yet to allow a run in three outings (7 IP).

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (5-6)

Myrtle Beach collected 11 hits in a 4-3 win over host Carolina.

  • RHP Jake Stinnett (3.27 ERA) gave up two earned runs in six innings, striking out four for the win.
  • 3B Jason Vosler (.324) extended his hitting streak to six games (10 for 23), going 3 for 5 with two RBI (5). He has reached base in all 11 games this season.
  • 2B Ian Happ (.256) went 2 for 3 with a season-high two runs scored, two walks and a stolen base (2).
  • DH Rashad Crawford (.308) and 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.267) also recorded two-hit games.
  • RHP Jose Rosario (2 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) and RHP James Farris (1 IP, 3 SO) closed out the game with three scoreless innings.

South Bend Cubs (5-5)

South Bend evened up its record at 5-5 with a 5-4 victory over Fort Wayne, snapping a three-game skid.

  • RF Eloy Jimenez (.250) went 2 for 4 with a double (2), two runs scored and an RBI (4).
  • CF Donnie Dewees (.421) added two doubles (4), going 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored. He has seven multi-hit efforts in 10 games this season.
  • 1B Tyler Alamo (.400) went 1 for 4. He has hit safely in all four games he has played in this season (6-for-15).

Cubs Minor League Recap: 4/14/14

Tennessee let a lead slip away in the ninth, while offensive woes continued to plague Daytona in another one-run loss. Iowa and Kane County were both rained out, but LHP Tsuyoshi Wada was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for the week of April 3-13. Wada went 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA (1 ER/13.1 IP) while striking out 18 hitters in two starts against Nashville and Memphis. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action:

Visiting Jackson scored three runs in the ninth inning to beat Tennessee 6-4.

  • 1B Dustin Geiger (.300) went 2-for-4 and clubbed his Southern League-leading fourth home run.
  • Rafael Lopez (.333) hit his first homer of the season, a solo shot in the fifth inning.
  • RHP C.J. Edwards allowed his second career home run when Jackson’s Jack Marder took him deep in the second inning. Edwards has surrendered only two home runs in 198.0 professional innings.
  • LHP Austin Kirk (0.00) tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.
  • Tuesday’s scheduled contest between Tennessee and Jackson has been postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Thursday evening.

Daytona Cubs (2-9)
5th Place (-7.0)

Daytona dropped its seventh game in its last eight, falling at Dunedin 1-0.

  • RHP Felix Pena suffered the loss despite tossing his second career complete game. Daytona has now lost each of Pena’s three starts this season by identical 1-0 scores.
  • CF Albert Almora (.279) went 0-for-3 before leaving the game in the fifth inning with a nose bleed.
  • 2B Tim Saunders (.263) recorded a game-high three hits, going 3-for-5 with a double (3).
