To bolster their bullpen, the Cubs acquired right-hander Henry Rodriguez from the Nationals Tuesday night in exchange for Kane County right-hander Ian Dickson.

In 17 relief appearances with the Nationals this season, the 26-year-old Rodriguez was 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 18 innings. He limited opponents to a .203 batting average against, including a .194 mark by right-handers and a .211 mark by left-handers. Rodriguez was designated for assignment by the Nats on June 4.

The Venezuelan native, whose fastball has averaged 98 MPH over his career, has pitched all or part of five seasons with the Athletics and Nationals, posting a career 5-7 record with 11 saves and a 4.23 ERA in 143 innings. He had career-high nine saves last year in Washington.

Dickson was 2-2 with a 6.88 ERA in 35.1 innings this year for Single-A Kane County. The 22-year-old was a 35th-round pick by the Cubs in the 2011 Draft.

To make room for Rodriguez on the 40-man roster, the Cubs designated Eduardo Sanchez for assignment. They had claimed the right-handed pitcher off waivers from the Cardinals on May 21.
