Kris Bryant, the Cubs’ first-round pick and the second-overall selection of the 2013 draft, was named the 2013 Golden Spikes Award recipient Friday. The award is handed out by USA Baseball to the best amateur ballplayer in the nation.
The third baseman from the University of San Diego batted .329 with a .493 on-base percentage and led the NCAA in home runs (31), walks (66), runs (80), total bases (187) and slugging percentage (.820).
Bryant beat out right-hander Tyler Beede of Vanderbilt and infielder Colin Moran of North Carolina, who was drafted sixth overall by the Marlins. The last Cubs prospect to win the Golden Spikes was Mark Prior in 2001.
