Right-hander Joe Blanton (1-0, 4.03 ERA in the NL) makes his first career start against the Cubs. Blanton and Harden face each other for the first time after spending 2004-08 as teammates in Oakland.
Welcome back, Scott Eyre
After walking onto the field for the 2008 team photo yesterday, Jim Hendry, Crane Kenney, Kerry Wood and several other players shook hands and chatted with Scott Eyre over by home plate. Scott was wearing a gray sleeveless Phillies shirt and shiny red shorts, but otherwise looked like the same friendly guy he was in his two-plus years here.
It’s good to see that Scott has found success with Philadelphia, throwing 7.2 scoreless innings since joining them Aug. 7.
Everyone in the front office was buzzing today after yesterday’s win over the Nationals put the team 30 games over .500, with the best record in the majors.
DeRo with homers in four straight games (and a career-high 18) … Geovany finding the bleachers for his 19th home run, tying a franchise record for a rookie catcher … Harden throwing 109 pitches over seven innings, allowing just a solo home run.
And perhaps topping it all was Kosuke slugging a pinch-hit, no-doubt home run down the rightfield line. He said after the game that what made him feel so good about the home run was how much it mattered to his teammates.
Interesting tidbit from Pat and Ron yesterday: Kosuke worked with Lou and hitting coach Gerald Perry on his swing this weekend. They recommended he spread his feet a little more so that he doesn’t have to take such a large stride for his swing. The hope was to help him shorten his swing. Sure enough, yesterday’s home run stroke on Steven Shell’s 2-0 pitch looked pretty compact …
Some around the office have argued that this team reminds them most of the 1984 Cubs. What do you think?
Right-hander Jeff Karstens (2-2, 2.25 ERA) pitches for Pittsburgh. It’s the second time the Cubs will have faced Karstens since the Pirates acquired him from the Yankees in July. Let’s also hope this time is better than the first: Karstens threw six shutout innings Aug. 1 despite allowing nine baserunners.

I just got out of the press conference with Jim Hendry; quotes to follow.
The Cubs this afternoon acquired RHP Rich Harden and RHP Chad Gaudin from the Athletics. In exchange, Oakland got RHP Sean Gallagher, OF Matt Murton, IF/OF Eric Patterson and minor-leaguer C Josh Donaldson.
Harden, 26, is 5-1 with a 2.34 ERA in 13 starts this season. This year, like previous ones, he has spent time on the disabled list. As a side note, his contract signed in 2005 has a club option for $7 million next year.
Gaudin, 25, is a reliever known for his deadly slider and is 5-3 with a 3.59 ERA in 62.2 innings this year (including six starts).
So, Cubs fans, what are your thoughts?
