Garrett Olson, we hardly knew ye

The Cubs acquired right-hander Aaron Heilman from the Seattle Mariners today, in exchange for shortstop Ronny Cedeno and left-hander Garrett Olson.

HEilman.jpgOlson was originally acquired from the Orioles on Jan. 18 for outfielder Felix Pie. His stay with the Cubs wasn’t very long–we didn’t even get him into an issue of Vine Line!

Cedeno, of course, had long been seen as one of our top infield prospects and made his impact as a valuable backup and occasional starter the last two years. He and Matt Murton graced the cover of our February 2006 Vine Line. However, with Ryan Theriot entrenched at shortstop and Mark DeRosa and Mike Fontenot playing regularly at second base the last couple of years, Cedeno found it hard to get on the diamond.

Heilman (right) looks like he could compete for the fifth starter’s slot in the Cubs rotation, as Heilman had made it clear to the Mets for a couple of years that he’d like a chance to start after serving as a top set-up man. Either that or he will continue to be that top set-up man for the Cubs. The Mets dealt Heilman to Seattle during the winter meetings in a multi-player transaction.
