It was a night for high-profile visitors at Wrigley Field this past Tuesday, as Justice Sandra Day O’Connor ceremoniously handed the official game ball to the umpires and Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn threw out the first pitch and helped conduct the seventh-inning stretch.
O’Connor was in town to promote one of her latest projects, ourcourts.org, a website that teaches children the importance of civics and active participation in the U.S. democracy. O’Connor spearheaded the project which supports teachers by offering free materials and information on civics.
Vonn lent her arm and singing voice while in town to root for her Colorado Rockies. While she originally hails from Minnesota, Vonn now lives in Colorado and has adopted the Rockies as her team, all the while skiing them, too. Vonn is the most decorated women’s skiier in U.S. history, culminating in her gold medal performance in the downhill at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.
It was inspiring to see two heralded representatives of our country at Wrigley Field. It was even more inspiring to see two women who have achieved such lofty heights in both athletics and civil service. Here are a couple of photos of them.
