Minor League recap: 9/3/13

Daytona waited out the weather and picked up a playoff win and Boise’s pitching was solid in a postseason victory Tuesday. Meanwhile, Tennessee will begin its playoff push Thursday. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Daytona Cubs

Daytona plated five, sixth-inning runs to defeat visiting Dunedin in Game 1 of the FSL Playoffs, 6-1. Game 2 of the best-of-three series is tonight at Dunedin.

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.667) recorded Daytona’s lone multihit effort, going 2-for-3.
  • RF Pin-Chieh Chen (.333) led off the bottom of the first inning with a double (1). He scored the game’s first run on a wild pitch later in the inning, putting the Cubs ahead 1-0.
  • DH Dan Vogelbach (.250) went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI (1).
  • RHP Corey Black scattered five hits while fanning seven to earn the win. Since joining the Cubs on July 26, Black has won five of his six starts and has more strikeouts (35) than hits allowed (27).
  • LHP Frank Del Valle (0.00) struck out two in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.
  • Dating to the regular season, the Cubs have won 12 of their last 13 games, including six in a row vs. Dunedin.

Boise Hawks

  • CF Kevin Encarnacion (.750) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a double (1).
  • RF Yasiel Balaguert (1.000) also recorded three hits, going 3-for-3 with a game-high two RBI (2).
  • 2B Dan Lockhart (.500) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double (1).
  • RHP Paul Blackburn tossed 7.0 shutout innings while fanning eight to earn the win. Blackburn is 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA (1 ER/15.0 IP) in his last three starts.
  • RHP Zack Godley (0.00) struck out three in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to convert the save.
  • Boise snapped a five-game losing streak dating back to the regular season.

Iowa continued its winning streak, Tennessee hurled a shutout, Daytona made it nine straight, and Mesa rode a big inning to victory Thursday night. But Boise slipped back into a first-place tie after a loss, and Kane County fell short. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (65-75)

Iowa won its fourth straight game, beating visiting Omaha 4-2.

  • RHP Casey Coleman earned the win, allowing five hits and two earned runs over six innings and striking out three.
  • 2B Edgar Gonzalez (.275) reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and one RBI (20).
  • SS Edwin Maysonet (.241) went 2-for-3 with a double (14) and one RBI (31).
  • RF Ty Wright (.283) went 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to eight games. He’s hitting .429 (12-for-28) during the streak.
  • RHP Alberto Cabrera (7.08) and RHP Marcos Mateo (2.03) each tossed a scoreless inning.
  • RHP Eduardo Sanchez (3.46) converted his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

Tennessee Smokies (39-26)

Tennessee allowed just one hit in a 5-0 victory over host Chattanooga.

  • RHP Neil Ramirez fanned five and allowed one hit and no earned runs in 4.2 innings.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.259) went 1-for-4 with a fourth-inning solo home run.
  • 1B Justin Bour (.237) was 1-for-4 with a double (16) and a team-high three RBI (58).
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.270) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double (35).
  • RHP P.J. Francescon (2-0, 4.34) struck out three in 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn his second win of the year.
  • RHP Yeiper Castillo (3.79) tossed 3.0 scoreless innings to convert his first save of the season.

Daytona Cubs (38-19-1)

Daytona won its ninth straight game, beating host Brevard County 3-2.

  • RF Bijan Rademacher (.261) went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a double (7).
  • C Chadd Krist (.253) was 1-for-4 with two RBI (33).
  • RHP Corey Black won his fourth straight decision, striking out six batters and allowing one run over six innings. He has struck out 28 hitters in 25.0 innings of work in five starts with Daytona.
  • LHP Jeffrey Lorick (3.48) allowed a run on three hits in 3.0 innings of relief to convert his third save of the season.

Kane County Cougars (23-42)

Kane County dropped a 5-2 decision at Cedar Rapids.

  • DH Marco Hernandez (.256) posted his third straight multihit effort, going 2-for-4 with an RBI (33).
  • 1B Rock Shoulders (.253) went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, a double (26) and one RBI (71).
  • LHP Matt Iannazzo (4.22) tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

Boise Hawks (20-14)

Boise fell into a first-place tie with a 10-8 loss to Salem-Keizer.

  • CF Kevin Encarnacion (.368) extended his hitting streak to 11 games, going 2-for-5 with a run scored, a home run and a team-high four RBI (28). He’s hitting .431 (22-for-51) with four home runs and 12 RBI during the stretch.
  • LF Shawon Dunston (.293) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases (12).
  • 2B Dan Lockhart (.296) went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, two RBI (22) and one stolen base (7).
  • SS Carlos Penalver (.266) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Mesa Cubs (14-13)

Mesa used a four-run third inning to beat host AZL D-backs 8-1.

  • RF Ryan Sweeney (.286) went 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, a double (2) and one RBI in the fourth game of a rehab assignment.
  • 3B Luis Valbuena (.714) went 3-for-4 with a run scored, a double (2), two RBI (3) and one stolen base (1) in the second game of his rehab assignment.
  • RHP Rafael Dolis (0.00) tossed a scoreless inning of relief in his third appearance of the season.
  • RHP Ethan Elias (2-1, 5.71) threw 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn his second win of the year.

Wednesday was a great day for the Cubs affiliates. The teams went 5-0, Daytona clinched the FSL second-half title, Kris Bryant mashed another home run, and Scott Baker had his best rehab start of the season. Both Tennessee and Mesa had the day off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (64-75)

Iowa won its third straight game, beating visiting Omaha 5-2.

  • RF Ty Wright (.279) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a team-high three RBI (36).
  • DH Edgar Gonzalez (.267) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two doubles (9).
  • 3B Mike Olt (.197) reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored.
  • RHP Kyle Hendricks tossed a season-high 8.0 innings, marking his third straight quality start. He has allowed just one home run in 34.0 innings of work with Iowa.
  • RHP Brian Schlitter (3.10) converted his 20th save of the year with a perfect ninth inning.

Daytona Cubs (37-19-1)

GM 1: Daytona clinched the Florida State League second half title with a 6-2 victory over visiting Dunedin.

  • DH Kris Bryant (.340) went 1-for-3 with a third-inning two-run homer.
  • 1B Dustin Geiger (.281) homered for the second straight game, going 1-for-3 with a first-inning two-run blast.
  • 3B Ben Carhart (.251) went 2-for-3.
  • RHP Lendy Castillo (2-0, 3.32) tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn his second win of the year.

GM 2: Daytona won its eighth straight game, beating Dunedin 3-0.

  • SS Wes Darvill (.256) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a double (13).
  • RF Bijan Rademacher (.256) was 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI (18).
  • RHP Ryan Searle (2-2, 5.09) struck out four in 3.0 scoreless innings of work to earn his second win of the season.

Kane County Cougars (23-41)

Kane County snapped its three-game losing streak, beating host Cedar Rapids 9-1.

  • RHP Scott Baker earned his first win after tossing his best rehab start of the year. Baker retired the first 13 hitters of the game.
  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.254) went 2-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored, a double (35), a home run and a team-high three RBI (57).
  • C Carlos Escobar (.232) went 1-for-5 with a fourth-inning two-run homer.
  • DH Rock Shoulders (.252), 1B Willson Contreras (.250) and CF Jose Dore (.230) all had a hit and one RBI.

Boise Hawks (20-13)

Boise used a 14-hit attack to beat visiting Salem-Keizer 10-6.

  • 1B Jacob Rogers (.287) and RF Yasiel Balaguert (.269) each hit their eighth homer of the season.
  • DH Justin Marra (.239) went 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, a double (3), a home run and a team-high three RBI (15).
  • CF Kevin Encarnacion (.367) extended his hitting streak to 10 games, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base (9). He’s hitting .435 (20-for-46) with 11 runs scored, three doubles, three home runs and eight RBI during the streak.
  • RHP Carlos Martinez-Pumarino (4-2, 5.04) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn his fourth win of the year.

Iowa captured a win despite some defensive issues, Tennessee’s second inning proved to be the difference, Daytona took both games of its doubleheader and Mesa cruised behind a big first inning Tuesday night. Only Kane County was on the wrong end of the scoreboard. Boise had the day off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (63-75)

Iowa won its second straight despite committing five errors, beating visiting Omaha 7-6.

  • RHP Justin Grimm picked up a win, giving up one earned run over five innings and striking out two.
  • C Luis Flores (.217) went 1-for-4 with a third-inning solo home run.
  • SS Edwin Maysonet (.235) went 1-for-3 with a team-high three RBI (30).
  • DH Dave Sappelt (.244) and 2B Edgar Gonzalez (.260) each recorded two hits and drove in a run.
  • LF Julio Borbon (.250) reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored and two stolen bases (5).
  • RHP Brian Schlitter (3.18) tossed 1.1 innings of relief to convert his 19th save of the year.

Tennessee Smokies (38-26)

Tennessee plated three second-inning runs to defeat visiting Mobile 4-2.

  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.268) went 1-for-4 with a fifth-inning solo home run.
  • 3B Jonathan Mota (.274) recorded Tennessee’s lone multihit effort, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
  • C Rafael Lopez (.252) snapped a four-game hitless skid, going 1-for-2 with a walk and one RBI (42).
  • LHP Eric Jokisch tossed his fifth straight quality start to earn his team-leading 11th victory of the season, pitching six scoreless innings and surrendering just two hits. He’s 3-2 with a 1.78 ERA (7 ER/35.1 IP) in August.
  • RHP Frank Batista (2.66) recorded the final two outs to convert his 18th save of the campaign.

Daytona Cubs (35-19-1)

GM 1: Daytona defeated visiting Dunedin 6-4 in the completion of Monday’s game.

  • RHP Pierce Johnson pitched three scoreless innings, surrendering two hits and striking out three.
  • 1B Dustin Geiger (.279) went 2-for-4 with a sixth-inning solo home run.
  • C Chadd Krist (.252) went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored, a double (13), a home run (5) and one RBI (30).
  • RF Pin-Chieh Chen (.273) recorded a team-high three hits, going 3-for-4 with two RBI (10).
  • RHP Ben Wells (9-6, 3.35) tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn his ninth win of the season.
  • LHP Frank Del Valle (2.29) struck out the final two batters to convert his ninth save of the year.

GM 2: Three Daytona pitchers combined on a seven-inning no-hitter to beat Dunedin 1-0. Daytona’s magic number to clinch the Florida State League second half title is two.

  • RHPs Ben Wells and Zach Cates (4.19) each worked a perfect inning, while LHP Kyler Burke (5-1, 3.00) tossed 5.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory and preserve the no-hitter. Burke struck out four and walked two.
  • LF Anthony Giansanti (.295) went 2-for-3 with two doubles (6).
  • 3B Kris Bryant (.357) went 1-for-3 with a double (2). He’s hit safely in 10 of his first 12 games with Daytona.
  • 1B Dustin Geiger (.281) went 1-for-3 with one RBI (79).

Kane County Cougars (22-41)

Kane County committed six errors in an 8-7 setback at Wisconsin. The Cougars (22-41, 52-77 overall) set a franchise record for losses in a season, eclipsing the previous mark set by the 1992 club that went 61-76.

  • RF Reggie Golden (.225) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a home run and a team-high two RBI (29).
  • DH Jeimer Candelario (.252) went 2-for-5 with a double (34) and a ninth-inning solo home run.
  • LF Jose Dore (.225), SS Marco Hernandez (.253) and 3B Giuseppe Papaccio (.266) all recorded two hits apiece.
  • RHP Justin Amlung (3.78) struck out two in 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.

Mesa Cubs (13-13)

Mesa used a five-run first inning to beat the visiting AZL Mariners 8-3.

  • RF Ryan Sweeney (.200) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, a double (1) and one RBI (1) in the third game of a rehabilitation assignment.
  • DH Luis Valbuena (.667) went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, a double (1) and one RBI (1) in the first game of his rehabilitation assignment.
  • RHP Rafael Dolis made his second relief appearance as part of a rehab assignment, tossing a scoreless inning and fanning one.
  • 3B-C Mark Malave (.263) went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored, two doubles (5) and two RBI (15).
  • 1B Kevin Freeman (.272) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI (19).
  • RHP Johermyn Chavez (1-1, 8.53) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn his second win of the year.

Iowa continued to make a late playoff push behind the pitching of Yoanner Negrin, RHP Matt Loosen boosted Tennessee into the playoffs with a strong effort that secured the Smokies the second half title of the Southern League and Boise pulled into a three-way tie for first with a win Monday. Kane County couldn’t get the bats going while Daytona’s game was suspended in the fourth inning and Mesa’s game was cancelled due to rain. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (62-75)

Iowa won for the fourth time in five games, beating visiting Omaha, 2-1.

  • RHP Yoanner Negrin tossed his first-career, nine-inning complete game, allowing one run on six hits while fanning six. It was the second complete game by a starter for Iowa this season (Chris Rusin, June 17 vs. Omaha).
  • RF Ty Wright (.275) extended his hitting streak to five games, going 3-for-4 with a run scored, two doubles (14) and one RBI (33).
  • CF Jae-Hoon Ha (.248) snapped a three-game hitless skid, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • 2B Edgar Gonzalez (.254) went 1-for-4 with one RBI (18).

Tennessee Smokies (37-26)

Tennessee won the Southern League second-half title with a 6-0 victory over visiting Mobile. The Smokies clinched a playoff berth for the fourth time in five years.

  • RHP Matt Loosen pitched seven scoreless innings, striking out six and allowing just three hits to pick up the win.
  • SS Javier Baez (.308) homered for the fourth time in his last six games, going 2-for-4 with the blast and a team-high four RBI (48). It was his 13th, multihit effort of the month, and he’s now hitting .390 (39-for-100) with seven home runs and 27 RBI in 25 August games.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.260) went 1-for-3 with a RBI (67) and his Southern League-leading 40th double of the season.
  • CF Matt Szczur (.280) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. He’s hit safely in seven of his last eight games.
  • RHP’s Armando Rivero (1.50) and Frank Batista (2.69) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

Kane County Cougars (22-40)

Kane County lost for the seventh time in nine games, falling at Wisconsin, 4-2.

  • C Willson Contreras (.250) recorded his second-straight, multihit effort, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and one stolen base (8).
  • SS Marco Hernandez (.251) and CF Oliver Zapata (.246) each recorded two hits.
  • LHP Andrew McKirahan (2.95) tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
  • With the loss, the Cougars tied a franchise record for losses in a season (22-40, 52-76 overall) set by the 1992 club that went 61-76.

Boise Hawks (19-13)

Boise pulled into a three-way tie atop the Northwest League South Division with a 4-3 victory at Hillsboro.

  • CF Kevin Encarnacion (.352) went 1-for-4 with a fourth-inning, solo home run.
  • SS Carlos Penalver (.259) reached base four times, going 2-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and a stolen base (8).
  • LF Shawon Dunston (.291) and 2B Dan Lockhart (.293) each drove in a run.
  • RHP Jasvir Rakkar (4-1, 3.63) struck out six in 3.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn his fourth win of the season.
  • RHP Eddie Orozco (4.50) converted his third save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning of work.

Sunday was a rough day for the Cubs’ minor league affiliates, as they posted a 1-5 record overall. The only squad on the positive side of the ledger was Daytona, which extended its winning streak to four games behind another strong effort by first-round pick Kris Bryant. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (61-75)

Visiting Memphis recorded 16 hits to beat Iowa 11-5.

  • CF Dave Sappelt (.241) went 2-for-4 with a double (14) and a seventh-inning two-run homer.
  • 1B-LF Greg Rohan (.105) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • 2B Edgar Gonzalez (.254) went 1-for-4 with a walk and one RBI (17).

Tennessee Smokies (36-26)

Tennessee lost its fourth-straight game, falling to visiting Mobile 2-0.

  • SS Javier Baez (.302) was 1-for-4. He has hit safely in 19 of 24 August games.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.259) went 1-for-3 with a stolen base (5).
  • RHP Yeiper Castillo (3.99) tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, scattering three hits.

Daytona Cubs (33-19-1)

Daytona won its fourth game in a row, plating seven third-inning runs in an 11-2 victory at Tampa.

  • DH Kris Bryant (.368) extended his hitting streak to seven games, going 2-for-4 with a double (3) and two RBI (9).
  • 3B Ben Carhart (.248) and 2B Wes Darvill (.253) each recorded two hits while driving in two runs apiece.

Boise fell behind by eight runs early, but still managed to pull off a win. Unfortunately, the Hawks were the only side to come away victorious Thursday. Iowa fell in the ninth, Tennessee couldn’t muster much offense despite a strong outing from LHP Eric Jokisch, Kane County got shut out, and Mesa continued its losing streak. Meanwhile, Daytona was rained out again. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (59-74)

Visiting Memphis scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Cubs 4-3.

  • RHP Justin Grimm gave up two earned runs over six innings, striking out four.
  • 1B Brad Nelson (.269) recorded a season-high in hits, going 4-for-4.
  • RF Dave Sappelt (.237) went 1-for-5 with a fourth-inning solo home run.
  • PH Ty Wright (.266) went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit RBI (31) single.
  • RHP Marcos Mateo (1.59) struck out a season-high four in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

Tennessee Smokies (36-23)

Tennessee managed just four hits in a 4-2 loss at Birmingham.

  • SS Javier Baez (.306) went 1-for-4 with a run scored. He’s hitting .400 (34-for-85) in 21 August games.
  • SS Arismendy Alcantara (.271) went 1-for-4 with a double (34) and one RBI (66).

Kane County lost its fifth-straight game, falling to visiting Beloit 4-0.

Boise Hawks (16-12)

Boise erased a 9-1 second-inning deficit to beat host Salem-Keizer 16-11. The teams combined for 27 runs on 39 hits (Boise 18, Salem-Keizer 21), and 12 players posted multihit efforts.

Tennessee racked up 17 hits and scored nine runs en route to a win Monday, but the Smokies were the only minor league team in the organization that came away victorious. Meanwhile, Daytona had the day off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (58-72)

Iowa lost its fifth straight, falling at New Orleans 3-2.

  • RF Dave Sappelt (.242) went 1-for-4 with an RBI (37) and one stolen base (3). He has hit safely in six of his last seven games.
  • 3B Mike Olt (.122) snapped a five-game hitless skid, going 1-for-3 with a walk.
  • C Luis Flores (.214) went 1-for-2 with a walk to extend his hitting streak to six games.
  • RHP Casey Coleman gave up one earned run on five hits over six innings, striking out three. He owns a 0.82 ERA (1 ER/11.0 IP) in his last two starts.

Tennessee Smokies (35-21)

Tennessee used a 17-hit outburst to rout host Birmingham 9-2.

  • SS Javier Baez (.298) recorded his 10th multihit game of the month, going 3-for-4 with a walk and two doubles (14). He’s hitting .397 (29-for-73) with 11 doubles, three home runs and 17 RBI in August.
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.268) went 2-for-5 with a double (31) and a sixth-inning solo home run.
  • CF Rubi Silva (.288) reached base five times, going 3-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored, a double (28), a triple (8) and two RBI (50).
  • 1B Justin Bour (.244) extended his hitting streak to nine games, going 2-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and a double (15). He’s hitting .371 (13-for-35) during the streak.
  • LF Matt Szczur (.281) and RF John Andreoli (.295) both posted multihit efforts.

Kane County Cougars (20-35)

Visiting Clinton used a four-run, first inning to roll past the Cougars 9-2.

  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.253) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double (32).
  • 1B Rock Shoulders (.253) recorded his 18th multi-RBI game of the season, going 1-for-4 with two RBI (65).
  • SS Giuseppe Papaccio (.260) went 1-for-4. He has hit safely in five of his last six games.
  • RHP Justin Amlung (4.14) and LHP Al Yevoli (4.73) each tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

Boise Hawks (14-11)

Boise dropped its third straight, falling at Tri-City 6-3.

  • 1B Jacob Rogers (.278) snapped a two-game hitless skid, going 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI (39).
  • CF Kevin Encarnacion (.327) went 1-for-4 with a run. He has hit safely in seven of his last eight games.
  • 2B Dan Lockhart (.293) extended his hitting streak to four games, going 1-for-3 with an RBI (17).
  • RHP Zack Godley (2.08) struck out three in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. He hasn’t allowed a home run in 21.2 innings of work with Boise this season.

Mesa Cubs (11-9)

Mesa dropped a 5-4 decision at the AZL Athletics.

  • LF Charcer Burks (.283) and CF Jeffrey Baez (.296) each recorded two hits.
  • 1B Kevin Brown (.229) went 1-for-3 with two walks, a double (4) and a team-high three RBI (12).
  • RHP Trevor Clifton (8.53) struck out two in 2.0 scoreless innings of work.

Tennessee and Daytona both made the most of big innings to secure wins Sunday, but Iowa, Kane County and Boise all were on the wrong end of the scoreboard. Meanwhile, Mesa had the day off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa lost its fourth-straight, falling at New Orleans, 4-3 in 16 innings.

  • CF Brian Bogusevic (.317) went 1-for-5 with a walk in the eighth game (first with Iowa) of a rehabilitation assignment.
  • 1B Brad Nelson (.262) went 1-for-7 with a first-inning, two-run homer.
  • LF Julio Borbon (.321) reached base five times, going 3-for-6 with two walks, a run scored and one stolen base (2).
  • SS Edwin Maysonet (.240) extended his hitting streak to six games, going 3-for-7 with a run and a double (11).
  • RHP’s Brian Schlitter (2.97) and Eduardo Sanchez (3.50) each tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

Tennessee Smokies (34-21)

Tennessee scored four runs in the ninth inning to beat host Birmingham, 5-2.

  • RHP Eduardo Figueroa tossed six scoreless innings, striking out five and walking just one.
  • C Rafael Lopez (.260) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, a double (21) and a season-high four RBI (39).
  • 3B Jonathan Mota (.274) extended his hitting streak to eight games, going 2-for-4 with a double (13) and a RBI (38). He’s hitting .522 (12-for-23) with two home runs and 12 RBI during the streak.
  • RHP Tony Zych (4-4, 2.42) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to earn his second win of the season. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last seven appearances (10.0 IP).

Daytona Cubs (30-19-1)

Daytona used a five-run, seventh inning to beat visiting Brevard County, 5-3.

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.360) went 1-for-3 with a walk and a seventh-inning, solo home run. He’s hit safely in six of his first seven games with Daytona.
  • DH Dan Vogelbach (.296) went 1-for-4 with a seventh-inning, two-run homer.
  • CF Zeke DeVoss (.258) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double (16).
  • RHP Scott Baker allowed one run on three hits in 3.0 innings of work.
  • RHP Pierce Johnson (6-1, 2.36) won his third-straight decision, allowing two runs on three hits while fanning six in 4.0 innings of relief.
  • RHP Austin Reed (4.40) converted his fourth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

Kane County Cougars (20-34)

Kane County dropped a 4-2 decision at home against the Clinton LumberKings.

The Cubs’ minor league affiliates went 3-3 Thursday, with Tennessee, Kane County and Boise all picking up victories. Smokies shortstop Javier Baez continues to crush the ball, top draft pick Kris Bryant is on a roll, and new acquisition C.J. Edwards has been nearly unhittable. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (58-68)

The visiting Sacramento River Cats recorded 12 hits in 9-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs.

  • SS Edwin Maysonet (.225) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and his 10th double of the season.
  • CF Julio Borbon (.294) was 1-for-3 with a double (1) and an RBI (1).
  • RF Jae-Hoon Ha (.261) went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to three games. He’s hitting .316 (18-for-57) in 14 August games.

Tennessee Smokies (32-20)

Tennessee won its fifth-straight game, beating visiting Chattanooga 4-3.

  • SS Javier Baez (.288) went 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to five games with an eighth-inning solo home run. After posting a .228 batting average in July, Baez is hitting .397 (23-for-58) with eight doubles, two home runs and 14 RBI in August.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.269) went 1-for-4 and registered his league-leading 36th double of the season. He leads the Smokies with 204 total bases.
  • 1B Justin Bour (.235) recorded his 10th multi-RBI effort, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI (52).
  • RHP A.J. Morris (4-2, 5.18) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn his fourth win of the campaign.
  • RHP Frank Batista (2.67) converted his 16th save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning of work.

Daytona Cubs (28-18-1)

Clearwater scored three runs in the seventh inning to beat host Daytona 4-2.

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.308) went 2-for-4 with one RBI (3). He’s hit safely in three of his first four games with Daytona.
  • SS Elliot Soto (.223) snapped a three-game hitless skid, going 1-for-4 with an RBI (15).
  • DH Dan Vogelbach (.250) went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a double (1).
  • RHP C.J. Edwards has not allowed more than two hits in any of his four starts with Daytona this season (14.2 IP). He has struck out 20 hitters compared to just five walks.

Kane County Cougars (19-32)

Kane County won despite recording just three hits, beating host Burlington 1-0.

  • SS Marco Hernandez (.252) went 1-for-3 with a second-inning solo home run.
  • 1B Rock Shoulders (.255) went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to four games.
  • LHP Rob Zastryzny (1-0, 0.00) recorded his first professional victory, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings of relief and fanning four.
  • RHP Stephen Perakslis (2.94) converted his sixth save of the year with a perfect ninth inning of work.

Boise Hawks (13-8)

Boise won for the eighth time in nine games, beating visiting Eugene 8-3.

  • C Lance Rymel (.254) went 1-for-4 with a third-inning two-run homer.
  • SS Carlos Penalver (.253) extended his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games, going 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and a double (12). He’s hitting .432 (16-for-37) during the streak.
  • CF Kevin Encarnacion (.344) went 1-for-3 with two walks, a run scored, two RBI (16) and a stolen base (6).
  • RHP Dillon Maples won his fifth-straight start while punching out a season-high nine hitters. He hasn’t surrendered a home run in 28.0 innings with Boise.

Mesa Cubs (9-8)

Mesa couldn’t keep pace with the AZL Padres, as it dropped a 9-7 decision on the road.

  • CF Brian Bogusevic (.286) went 1-for-2 with three walks, two runs scored, a double (3) and one stolen base (2) in the sixth game of a rehabilitation assignment.
  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.286) and C Erick Castillo (.270) each recorded two hits apiece.
  • 3B Greg Rohan (.286) reached base four times, going 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI (4).
