Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/15/15

Iowa and Tennessee each secured wins while Myrtle Beach couldn’t get out of an early deficit Monday. South Bend’s game was cancelled in the third inning due to weather. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (34-29)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Second Place (-8.0)

Iowa claimed its fourth win in its last five contests, defeating host Omaha, 6-3.

  • LHP Drake Britton (3.42) picked up the win with five strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched, giving up two earned runs.
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.277) went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs (10), his first multi-homer game of the season. He is batting .316 (18-for-57) with five doubles and three homers in June.
  • 1B Chris Valaika (.260) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI (16).
  • LF John Andreoli (.298) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, his second straight multi-hit game.
  • C Rafael Lopez (.274) went 2-for-4 with a double (8), a run scored and an RBI (17).

Tennessee Smokies (35-29)
Southern League (Double-A)
Second Place (-4.5)

The Smokies won their third straight game versus Jacksonville, 5-1, and outscored the Suns 21-5 during that span.

  • RHP Ryan Williams (2.93) fanned seven batters in 6.0 innings, giving up one earned run to pick up the win.
  • LF Jacob Hannemann (.207) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored. He has five runs in his last five games.
  • CF Albert Almora (.254) went 2-for-4 with a triple (2), run scored and RBI (17).
  • C Kyle Schwarber (.320) went 2-for-5 with double (10) and a run scored.
  • 1B Dan Vogelbach (.294) reached twice, going 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBI (27).

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (36-27)
Carolina League (High-A)
First Place (+3.0)

The Pelicans fell behind 6-1 in the third inning and could not recover, falling 7-4 at Winston-Salem.

  • 2B Chesny Young (.368) had the team’s only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI (12). He has hit safely in eight straight games (.387/12-for-31).
  • LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.275) went 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. He has scored six runs in his last six games.
  • RHP Jasvir Rakkar (2.70) fanned two batters in a scoreless inning of relief.

 

Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/14/15

It was a good day for Cubs affiliates as all four teams picked up wins Sunday. Iowa won in extras, Tennessee and Myrtle Beach were carried by solid pitching and South Bend ended a losing streak. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa Cubs (33-29)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Second Place (-8.0)

Iowa took three of four games from visiting Colorado Springs, winning the finale, 8-7 in 10 innings.

  • RHP Dallas Beeler (7.57) gave up one earned run in 5.0 innings, striking out six in the no-decision.
  • SS Chris Valaika (.249) hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning, finishing 1-for-5 with a run and RBI.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.277) started the scoring with a three-run homer (8) in the first inning, finishing 2-for-4 with a walk, home run, run scored and three RBI (28).
  • CF John Andreoli (.292) reached base four times, going 2-for-3 with two walks, one run scored and an RBI (8).
  • RHP Gonzalez Germen improved to 4-0 as he tossed 2.0 scoreless innings (0 H, 1 SO).

Tennessee Smokies (34-29)
Southern League (Double-A)
Second Place (-4.5)

The Smokies collected their second straight win, topping host Jacksonville, 4-1.

  • Making his second rehab start, RHP Jacob Turner (2.00) threw 63 pitches in 5.0 scoreless innings.
  • CF Albert Almora (.249) went 2-for-5 with a double (8) and run scored.
  • 2B Stephen Bruno (.272) went 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI (19) and a stolen base (6). He has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 games and is batting .350 (14-for-40) in June.
  • C Kyle Schwarber (.318) went 0-for-2 but tied a season high with three walks and scored a run.
  • RF Bijan Rademacher (.232) scored two runs, going 1-for-4 with a walk and RBI (22).

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (36-26)
Carolina League (High-A)
First Place (+3.0)

The Pelicans surrendered just two hits as they rolled past visiting Lynchburg, 7-1.

  • RF Mark Zagunis (.303) went 2-for-5 with a double (13), run scored and two RBI (24).
  • LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.276) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI (14).
  • CF Trey Martin (.240) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, his sixth multi-hit game.
  • RHP Jonathan Martinez (2.62) surrendered one earned run in 6.0 innings in the win. He has gone 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA (3 ER/16.0 IP) in three June starts.
  • RHP James Pugliese (1.56) has gone at least 2.0 innings in 14 of his 19 relief appearances and has held the opponent scoreless in 10 of those outings.

South Bend Cubs (27-34)
Midwest League (Low-A)
Eighth Place (-9.0)

South Bend snapped a five-game losing skid, defeating host Peoria, 7-3.

  • SS Gleyber Torres (.319) collected a career-best five hits as he went 5-for-5 with a double (11), two-run homer (1), two runs scored and three RBI (35).
  • RF Yasiel Balaguert (.295) went 3-for-5 with a double (12) and run scored. Balaguert has hit safely in five straight games (9-for-22), including two three-hit efforts.
  • 2B Andrew Ely (.259) went 2-for-5 with a double (7) and two runs scored.
  • 1B Jesse Hodges (.238) went 2-for-4, his 10th multi-hit game of the season.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/11/15

Tennessee and Myrtle Beach were the only squads that took the field Thursday, though neither was able to pick up the win. Both Iowa and South Bend were rained out, which each team playing a doubleheader Friday. Here are some notes from yesterday’s Cubs minor league action:

Tennessee Smokies (32-28)
Southern League (Double-A)
Second Place (-3.5)

Tennessee dropped the series opener at Jacksonville, 5-2. The Smokies were 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

  • SS Elliot Soto (.274) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
  • LF Jacob Hannemann (.191) went 2-for-4 and scored once.
  • RF Bijan Rademacher (.234) went 1-for-1 with a walk and a RBI (21).
  • RHP Pierce Johnson (0.00) drew a no-decision in his first outing with the Smokies, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings and allowing just three hits.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (35-24)
Carolina League (High-A)
First Place (+5.0)

Myrtle Beach fell to Frederick in the series finale, 7-4. The two teams split the four-game series, 2-2.

  • RF Mark Zagunis (.308) went 2-for-5 with two doubles (12) and one run scored. It marked his second consecutive multi-hit game.
  • LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.271) went 1-for-4 with two RBI (13) and scored once.
  • 3B Chesny Young (.373) went 2-for-4 with a double (3) and a walk, marking his third consecutive multi-hit game (6-for-12/.500).
  • C Victor Caratini (.253) went 2-for-5 and scored once, improving his hitting streak to four games.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/10/15

Myrtle Beach won in extra innings Wednesday, but South Bend gave up a few runs late in a loss. Meanwhile, Iowa had the day off and Tennessee was postponed due to a sprinkler system malfunction. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (35-23)

First Place (+5.0)

The Pelicans prevailed over host Frederick, 9-6 in 11 innings. The teams combined to score 10 runs in the final three innings with four Pelicans registered three-hit games.

  • RHP Duane Underwood (2.08) gave up one earned run in 6.0 innings, striking out three.
  • DH Mark Zagunis (.305) went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI (24).
  • 1B Jacob Rogers (.253) extended his hitting streak to five games (7-for-16) with a three-hit game, going 3-for-6 with three RBI (34).
  • CF Trey Martin (.243) went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and a stolen base (8).
  • RF Kevin Brown (.237) went 3-for-5 with a run scored, snapping a five-game hitless skid.
  • LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.272) and 3B Chesny Young (.367) each went 2-for-5 with a walk and two runs.

South Bend surrendered three runs in the eighth inning, falling 6-4 at Burlington.

Iowa was the only affiliate in action Monday, but the I-Cubs represented the organization well with a victory. Tennessee, Myrtle Beach and South Bend were all rained out yesterday. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa recorded just four hits, topping Memphis, 2-1. The I-Cubs lead the four-game series, 2-1.

  • PH Rafael Lopez (.264) went 1-for-1 and drove in the winning run (16) in the eighth inning.
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.281) went 1-for-4 with a double (6) and one run scored.
  • RF Rubi Silva (.276) went 1-for-3 and scored off a fielding error in the first inning.

Iowa was victorious in walk-off fashion, and Myrtle Beach mustered just enough offense to secure a win Sunday. Meanwhile, Tennessee couldn’t get the bats going, and South Bend’s winning streak came to an end. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Taylor Teagarden hit a walk-off single in the ninth inning as the I-Cubs topped Memphis, 3-2.

  • C Taylor Teagarden (.292) went 3-for-4 with the walk-off single, a home run and all three RBI (16).
  • 3B Javier Baez (.314) went 1-for-3 with a stolen base before leaving the game with a fractured finger.
  • RHP Donn Roach (2.07) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up one earned run and striking out five. He has allowed one earned run or fewer in at least 6.0 innings in five of his last seven starts and eight of 12 overall. He has allowed just 16 earned runs in 69.2 innings pitched.

Tennessee Smokies (31-26)

Second Place (-2.0)

The Smokies collected seven hits but zero runs, falling 1-0 in 11 innings to Birmingham.

  • CF Jacob Hannemann had the team’s only extra-base hit, going 1-for-3 with a double (4).
  • C Kyle Schwarber went 1-for-4 with a walk. He has hit safely in five straight games (8-for-19).
  • RHP Frank Batista tossed 7.0 scoreless frames for the second time this season.
  • RHP Tayler Scott allowed just one run in 4.0 innings, but took the loss.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (33-22)

The Pelicans scored four runs on just five hits, defeating visiting Carolina, 4-1.

  • DH Mark Zagunis (.302) went 2-for-4 with a home run (3), a double (10), a run scored and two RBI (22). He has scored a run in five of the last six games.
  • 1B Jacob Rogers went 1-for-4 with a go-ahead, two-run double in the sixth inning.
  • LHP Michael Heesch improved to a perfect 4-0 record with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.
  • RHP James Pugliese collected his fourth save, allowing just one hit and no runs in 2.2 innings.

South Bend Cubs (26-30)

Seventh Place (-6.5)

South Bend saw its three-game winning streak snapped, dropping an 8-3 decision vs. Quad Cities.

  • 3B Jason Vosler (.271) went 1-for-3 with a double (7), a run scored and an RBI (11). Vosler has hit safely in three straight games (5-for-11).
  • 1B Cael Brockmeyer (.302) reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI (28). He is 7-for-15 with four runs scored and four RBI in his last four games.
  • LF Kevin Encarnacion (.321) went 1-for-3 with a walk and continued his six-game hitting streak (7-for-20).
  • RHP Ryan McNeil (3.93) tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit and one walk.

Iowa and Tennessee rolled, while South Bend held on to pick up a win on Thursday. However, Myrtle Beach couldn’t bounce back from an early deficit. Here are some notes from yesterday’s Cubs minor league action:

Iowa cruised past Albuquerque for an 8-2 victory. Christian Villanueva homered in his fourth consecutive game, and the I-Cubs had eight extra-base hits.

  • Villanueva (.301) finished 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, three RBI, one walk and three runs scored. He has gone 12-for-27 (.444) with 14 RBI, four homers three doubles and a triple in his last six games.
  • 2B Chris Valaika (.248) went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and one run scored, extending his hitting streak to six games (9-for-24/.375).
  • C Rafael Lopez (.265) went 3-for-5 and drove in one.
  • LHP Eric Jokisch (3.66) pitched 5.0 innings, surrendering two earned runs in the win. He also  knocked his first career home run and hit a sacrifice bunt for a season high two RBI.

Tennessee rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to top Chattanooga, 6-1. The Smokies have won six of their last seven games.

  • LF Chris Denorfia (.333) went 1-for-3 with an RBI double, scored once and walked once in his first rehab game with the club.
  • DH Kyle Schwarber (.327) went 2-for-4 and plated two.
  • RHP Felix Pena (3.32) tossed his fifth quality start of the campaign, going 7.0 innings and striking out seven. He has fanned 22 batters in the past three games (17.0 innings).

First Place (+5.0)

Myrtle Beach gave up an early lead, falling to the Carolina Mudcats, 3-2.

  • C Victor Caratini (.243) went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI and one walk.
  • DH Chesny Young (.371) finished 2-for-4 and scored once.
  • LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.281) went 2-for-3 and walked once.
  • LHP Daury Torrez (3.91) tossed a quality start but took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) off four hits while walking two and fanning six in 6.0 innings of work.

Seventh Place (-7.5)

South Bend scored four runs in the first inning and hung on to top Cedar Rapids, 6-4.

  • C Cael Brockmeyer (.298) went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, two RBI and one run scored, snapping a five-game hitless skid.
  • LF Rashad Crawford (.278) went 2-for-3, knocked a double, plated one, swiped a base and walked once.

  • RHP Trevor Clifton (3.83) snapped a three-game skid, earning the win with 5.0 innings of work.

Tennessee picked up another road win, but Iowa’s winning streak was stopped and South Bend gave up a late lead on Thursday. Myrtle Beach was off and will resume play Friday. Here are some notes from yesterday’s Cubs minor league action:

  • CF Rubi Silva (.290) collected his first four-hit game of the season, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, two runs scored and three RBI.
  • 1B Christian Villanueva (.295) homered for the third consecutive game, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI. He is 9-for-19 with three homers and 10 RBI over his last four games.
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.283) went 2-for-5 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base in his fifth multi-hit game in his last six outings.
  • LF Adron Chambers recorded his fourth straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Chambers has hit safely in seven straight games (.481/13-for-27).
  • SS Chris Valaika (.241) extended his hitting streak to five games (7-for-20), going 2-for-4.

Tennessee picked up its third straight win at Chattanooga, topping the Lookouts, 6-3.

  • RHP Ryan Williams earned the win in his Double-A debut. He was named the Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May, posting a 1.59 ERA in five starts with South Bend.
  • DH Kyle Schwarber picked up his sixth three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI after being named Cubs Minor League Player of the Month for May (.297 AVG, 8 HR).
  • C Willson Contreras (.328) hit a three-run homer in the third inning as part of a 1-for-4 night that also included a walk. He has hit safely in six-straight games (.458/11-for-24).

South Bend Cubs (23-29)
Midwest League (Low-A)
Seventh Place (-7.5)

South Bend surrendered six runs in the eighth inning to drop a 9-5 decision to Cedar Rapids.

  • C Gioskar Amaya (.236) extended his hitting streak to four games (5-for-14) with a three-run homer in the second inning, his second of the season.
  • LF Kevin Encarnacion (.353) went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
  • 3B Jason Vosler (.263) went 2-for-4, recording his 11th multi-hit game of the season.
  • CF Charcer Burks (.282) went 1-for-4 with a walk, a double, a run scored and two stolen bases.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/2/15

  • LF Adron Chambers (.280) recorded a season high four hits, including a double, drove in one and scored twice. It extended his hitting streak to six games (11-for-24/.458).
  • CF Arismendy Alcantara (.279) went 3-for-4 with a home run, one walk and a season high four runs scored. He has recorded multi-hit games in four of his last five.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.290) went 2-for-5 and hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning, marking his third consecutive multi-hit game.
  • RHP Donn Roach (2.12) gave up one earned run in 6.0 innings pitched and improved to a perfect 6-0 record, tossing his ninth quality start.

  • DH Willson Contreras (.329) went 3-for-5 and plated one, marking his second consecutive three-hit game.
  • RHP Frank Batista (1.67) earned the win, giving up just two runs off six hits in 5.2 innings of work.

G1: Myrtle Beach fell to Potomac in 11 innings, dropping the third game of the series 4-3.

  • RHP Jen-Ho Tseng (4.14) gave up two earned runs in 5.1 innings in the no-decision.
  • DH Chesny Young (.371) went 2-for-4, swiped a base, walked once and scored twice.
  • CF Pin-Chieh Chen (.271) went 2-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base.
  • RF Mark Zagunis (.306) went 2-for-5 and added a walk and a run scored.
  • C Victor Caratini (.233) went 1-for-4 with a two-run double and a walk.

G2: Myrtle Beach got out to an early lead, but dropped the second game of the day to Potomac 4-3.

  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.273) went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and one run scored.
  • 1B Jacob Rogers (.247) went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
  • C Victor Caratini (.241) went 2-for-4 and scored once.
  • SS Carlos Penalver (.254) recorded a double and scored once, finishing 2-for-3.
  • RHP Jonathan Martinez (2.86) delivered a season high six strikeouts and walked none in 5.0 innings to get the no-decision.

Minor League Recap: 6/1/15

It was a good day all around for the Cubs minor league affiliates Monday, as Iowa and Tennessee each won by 10 runs and South Bend took both games of a doubleheader. Myrtle Beach was suspended due to rain with the game tied in the 10th inning. They will resume play prior to tonight’s game. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa scored 14 runs on 15 hits to top El Paso, 14-4. Every I-Cub in the starting lineup recorded a hit.

  • RHP Carlos Pimentel (3.99) picked up the win, pitching 7.0 scoreless innings and striking out five.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.286) went 3-for-5 with a home run, a triple, a double, three RBI and a season-high three runs scored.
  • CF Matt Szczur (.330) crushed a three-run homer in the third inning, extending his hitting streak to seven games (11-for-29/.379).
  • LF Adron Chambers (.255) went 2-for-4, plated two and scored twice.
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.267) went 2-for-5 with a triple, swiped a base and scored twice.

G1: South Bend scored four runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and top Lake County, 5-4.

  • C Gioskar Amaya (.234) went 2-for-3, plated one and scored once.
  • LF Kevin Encarnacion (.273) went 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and one run scored.

G2: South Bend blanked Lake County in the second game of the day, topping the Captains, 4-0.

  • RHP Erick Leal (4.27) gave up no earned runs in 5.0 innings to pick up the win.
  • 2B Andrew Ely (.353) went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double, plating two and scoring once. It extended his hitting streak to five games (10-for-20/.500).
  • LF Rashad Crawford (.270) went 2-for-3, swiped a base and scored once.
