Minor League recap: 8/15/13

The Cubs’ minor league affiliates went 3-3 Thursday, with Tennessee, Kane County and Boise all picking up victories. Smokies shortstop Javier Baez continues to crush the ball, top draft pick Kris Bryant is on a roll, and new acquisition C.J. Edwards has been nearly unhittable. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (58-68)

The visiting Sacramento River Cats recorded 12 hits in 9-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs.

  • SS Edwin Maysonet (.225) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and his 10th double of the season.
  • CF Julio Borbon (.294) was 1-for-3 with a double (1) and an RBI (1).
  • RF Jae-Hoon Ha (.261) went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to three games. He’s hitting .316 (18-for-57) in 14 August games.

Tennessee Smokies (32-20)

Tennessee won its fifth-straight game, beating visiting Chattanooga 4-3.

  • SS Javier Baez (.288) went 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to five games with an eighth-inning solo home run. After posting a .228 batting average in July, Baez is hitting .397 (23-for-58) with eight doubles, two home runs and 14 RBI in August.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.269) went 1-for-4 and registered his league-leading 36th double of the season. He leads the Smokies with 204 total bases.
  • 1B Justin Bour (.235) recorded his 10th multi-RBI effort, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI (52).
  • RHP A.J. Morris (4-2, 5.18) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to earn his fourth win of the campaign.
  • RHP Frank Batista (2.67) converted his 16th save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning of work.

Daytona Cubs (28-18-1)

Clearwater scored three runs in the seventh inning to beat host Daytona 4-2.

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.308) went 2-for-4 with one RBI (3). He’s hit safely in three of his first four games with Daytona.
  • SS Elliot Soto (.223) snapped a three-game hitless skid, going 1-for-4 with an RBI (15).
  • DH Dan Vogelbach (.250) went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a double (1).
  • RHP C.J. Edwards has not allowed more than two hits in any of his four starts with Daytona this season (14.2 IP). He has struck out 20 hitters compared to just five walks.

Kane County Cougars (19-32)

Kane County won despite recording just three hits, beating host Burlington 1-0.

  • SS Marco Hernandez (.252) went 1-for-3 with a second-inning solo home run.
  • 1B Rock Shoulders (.255) went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to four games.
  • LHP Rob Zastryzny (1-0, 0.00) recorded his first professional victory, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings of relief and fanning four.
  • RHP Stephen Perakslis (2.94) converted his sixth save of the year with a perfect ninth inning of work.

Boise Hawks (13-8)

Boise won for the eighth time in nine games, beating visiting Eugene 8-3.

  • C Lance Rymel (.254) went 1-for-4 with a third-inning two-run homer.
  • SS Carlos Penalver (.253) extended his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games, going 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and a double (12). He’s hitting .432 (16-for-37) during the streak.
  • CF Kevin Encarnacion (.344) went 1-for-3 with two walks, a run scored, two RBI (16) and a stolen base (6).
  • RHP Dillon Maples won his fifth-straight start while punching out a season-high nine hitters. He hasn’t surrendered a home run in 28.0 innings with Boise.

Mesa Cubs (9-8)

Mesa couldn’t keep pace with the AZL Padres, as it dropped a 9-7 decision on the road.

  • CF Brian Bogusevic (.286) went 1-for-2 with three walks, two runs scored, a double (3) and one stolen base (2) in the sixth game of a rehabilitation assignment.
  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.286) and C Erick Castillo (.270) each recorded two hits apiece.
  • 3B Greg Rohan (.286) reached base four times, going 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI (4).

Iowa, Tennessee, Boise and Mesa all captured victories Wednesday night, while Daytona split its doubleheader and Kane County put itself in too big of a deficit to recover. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (58-67)

Iowa held visiting Sacramento to just four hits in a 2-1 victory.

  • RHP Casey Coleman picked up the win, striking out five over five scoreless innings and giving up one hit.
  • CF Jae-Hoon Ha (.262) went 2-for-3 with a walk and a fifth-inning, solo home run.
  • LF Dave Sappelt (.242) went 1-for-4 with a run scored. He’s hit safely in four of his last five games.
  • LHP Zach Rosscup (0.00) struck out two in a scoreless inning of relief.
  • RHP Brian Schlitter (3.15) converted his 17th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.

Tennessee Smokies (31-20)

Tennessee won its fourth straight game, beating visiting Chattanooga, 6-2.

  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.269) went 2-for-3 with a walk, two doubles (35) and a RBI (35).
  • SS Javier Baez (.280) extended his hitting streak to four games, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, two doubles (10) and three RBI (34).
  • RF John Andreoli (.293) posted his 11th, multihit effort, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double (11).
  • RHP Tony Zych (2.52) struck out two in 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. He hasn’t allowed a run in his last six appearances (9.0 IP).

Daytona Cubs (28-17-1)

GM 1: Daytona used a five-run second inning to beat visiting Clearwater, 5-1.

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.333) went 1-for-3 with a second-inning, solo home run. It was his second homer in as many days, and he’s now hit safely in 17 straight games (15 straight with Boise).
  • 1B Dustin Geiger (.284) and C Chadd Krist (.238) each had two hits apiece.
  • CF Zeke DeVoss (.261) extended his hitting streak to five games, going 1-for-2 with two walks and a RBI (48).

GM 2: Daytona managed just two hits in a 2-0 loss to Clearwater.

  • LF Anthony Giansanti (.296) went 1-for-3 with a single.
  • C Yaniel Cabezas (.247) went 1-for-2, extending his hitting streak to seven games.
  • RHP Lendy Castillo (3.21) allowed a run on four hits while striking out three in 3.0 innings of relief.

Kane County Cougars (18-32)

Kane County surrendered four, first-inning runs in a 5-4 loss at Burlington.

  • RF Reggie Golden (.238) went 1-for-3 with a fourth-inning, three-run homer.
  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.258) extended his hitting streak to three games with an eighth-inning, solo home run.
  • LHP Sheldon McDonald (1.21) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief. He’s holding left-handed hitters to a .167 batting average (5-for-30) on the season.

Boise Hawks (12-8)

A day after setting a season-high in runs (12), Boise set another one in a 13-2 rout of the Eugene Emeralds. The Hawks pounded out 15 hits for the third straight game, and have now won seven of their last eight games.

  • CF Brian Bogusevic (.263) went 1-for-5 with a walk, a run scored, a double (2) and one RBI (3) in the fifth game of a rehabilitation assignment.
  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.281), SS Francisco Sanchez (.215) and 2B Trevor Stevens (.265) all recorded multihit efforts.
  • 3B Jesse Hodges (.221) went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a career-high four RBI (19).

Tennessee continued its winning streak and Boise routed Eugene while Daytona split its Tuesday doubleheader. Meanwhile, walks cost Iowa in a defeat while Kane County and Mesa both had the day off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (57-67)

Iowa pitchers surrendered nine walks in a 6-4 loss to the visiting Sacramento River Cats.

  • 2B Edgar Gonzalez (.316) posted his second straight multihit effort, going 2-for-5 with a RBI (14).
  • C Chad Noble (.167) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI (1).
  • SS Edwin Maysonet (.216) recorded his sixth, multi-RBI game of the season, going 1-for-4 with a run scored, a double (9) and two RBI (27).
  • RHP Marcus Hatley (4.55) walked and struck out three hitters in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. He’s holding right-handed hitters to a .188 batting average (12-for-64).

Tennessee Smokies (30-20)

Tennessee won its fourth-straight game, beating visiting Chattanooga, 4-1.

  • RHP Eduardo Figueroa pitched five scoreless innings, striking out one in the win.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.266) went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and his Southern League-leading 33rd double of the campaign.
  • CF Matt Szczur (.283) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. He’s hit safely in eight of his last nine contests.

Boise Hawks (11-8)

Boise set a season-high in runs with a 12-1 rout of the visiting Eugene Emeralds. The Hawks have won six of their last seven games.

  • RF Yasiel Balaguert (.289) clubbed his league-leading seventh home run, going 2-for-3 with two walks, three runs scored, a double (14), the home run and three RBI (38).
  • LF David Bote (.251) went 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, two doubles (8), a season-high four RBI (24) and one stolen base (4).
  • 3B Jordan Hankins (.257) was 3-for-5 with a run scored, a double (5) and one RBI (8).
  • 2B Daniel Lockhart (.297) and 1B Jacob Rogers (.284) each recorded two hits. Rogers also drew three walks, reaching base five times during the game.

Justin Grimm was solid in a win for Iowa, Tennessee took both games in its doubleheader, Daytona continued its winning streak, Michael Heesch led Kane County to a victory and Mesa picked up a shutout win Monday. Meanwhile, Boise had the day off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (57-66)

Iowa won despite recording just five hits, beating visiting Sacramento, 2-1.

  • RHP Justin Grimm picked up the win striking out six and allowing just one earned run over 5.1 innings.
  • 3B Josh Vitters (.294) went 1-for-2 with a walk and a fourth-inning, solo home run.
  • DH Mike Olt’s fifth-inning, solo home run proved to be the game-winner. He’s homered in two of his last five games after not recording a homer in his first 13 games as a Cub (.195).
  • 2B Edgar Gonzalez (.311) extended his hitting streak to three games, going 2-for-4 with a double (7).
  • RHP Brian Schlitter (3.24) converted his 16th save of the year, tossing 1.1-scoreless innings of relief.

Tennessee Smokies (29-20)

GM 1: Tennessee defeated visiting Montgomery 3-2 in the completion of Sunday night’s game.

  • DH Javier Baez (.273) went 2-for-4 with a sixth-inning, solo home run.
  • 1B Justin Bour (.226) went 1-for-4 with a double (13) and one RBI (48).
  • LHP Eric Jokisch (10-10, 3.47) earned the win in relief, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits in 6.1 innings. Yesterday, Jokisch was named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of August 5-11. He threw a no-hitter August 6 against Jacksonville, the Smokies’ first nine-inning no-hitter since Scot Elam in 1985.
  • RHP Tony Zych (2.61) recorded the final two outs to convert his second save of the year.

GM 2: Tennessee scored six, first-innings runs for a 9-4 victory over Montgomery.

Daytona won its third straight behind a strong pitching performance by Corey Black and Mesa edged out a win Sunday. Boise split its doubleheader while Iowa had its winning streak snapped and errors cost Kane County. Tennessee was rained out. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa had its four-game winning streak snapped, falling to visiting Fresno, 4-1.

  • CF Jae-Hoon Ha (.263) extended his hitting streak to 13 games (.365/19-for-52), going 1-for-4 with a RBI (18).
  • LF Dave Sappelt (.241) went 1-for-4. He’s hit safely in four of his last five games.
  • RHP Marcus Hatley (4.85) struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning of work.
  • LHP Zach Rosscup (0.00) struck out the side in the eighth in his first game with Iowa.

Daytona Cubs (25-15-1)

Daytona won its third-straight game, beating the visiting Tampa Yankees, 5-4.

Cubs affiliates went 5-0 yesterday, as Kyle Hendricks won his Triple-A debut for Iowa, Tennessee eked out a victory, Daytona blanked Clearwater behind a strong pitching effort from Pierce Johnson, Kane County racked up its third straight win, and Boise help off Vancouver. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (54-65)

Iowa won its second game in a row, edging visiting Fresno 2-1 in a pitchers’ duel.

  • RHP Kyle Hendricks struck out five over seven innings and gave up just four hits and no earned runs to pick up the win in his Triple-A debut.
  • 1B Brad Nelson (.267) went 1-for-3 with a fourth-inning solo homer.
  • RF Jae-Hoon Ha (.250) extended his hitting streak to 10 games (.350/14-for-40), going 1-for-4 with an RBI (15).
  • RHP Alberto Cabrera (3.97) secured his second hold, walking one in a scoreless eighth frame.

Kane County captured its second win in a row, and a few big innings were enough for Mesa Wednesday. Meanwhile, Daytona couldn’t hold a lead while Iowa, Tennessee and Boise were all off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Daytona Cubs (22-15-1)

Daytona couldn’t hold a 5-2 seventh-inning lead, falling at Clearwater 6-5 in 10 innings.

  • CF Zeke DeVoss (.259) reached base five times, going 3-for-4 with two walks, a double (14) and two runs scored.
  • DH Anthony Giansanti (.278) reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base (1).
  • LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.277) reached base three times as well, going 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.

Kane County Cougars (16-28)

Kane County won its second game in a row, collecting 12 hits in a 7-4 victory over visiting Burlington.

  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.256) reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk, a triple (1), a run and an RBI (45).
  • C Carlos Escobar (.263) went 2-for-3 with a double (9) and a run scored.
  • RF Jose Dore (.222) added two hits, going 2-for-3.
  • LHP Sheldon McDonald (2-0, 1.42) picked up the win, tossing 2.2 innings of one-run, one-hit relief, while walking one and fanning four.
  • RHP Stephen Perakslis (3.06) converted his fifth save, allowing one hit while fanning two in a scoreless ninth inning.

Mesa Cubs (6-5)

Mesa plated four runs in the third inning and seven more in the fifth, pounding the host AZL Brewers 11-4.

Iowa’s offense was powered by a strong effort from Edgar Gonzalez, Eric Jokisch was literally unhittable for Tennessee, Kane County’s bats came alive and Boise was well-represented in the Northwest League All-Star Game Tuesday. Meanwhile, Mesa had its winning streak snapped while Daytona had the day off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (53-65)

Iowa belted a season-high six home runs in a 10-3 victory at Tacoma.

  • 2B Edgar Gonzalez (.324) went 5-for-6 with three home runs, three runs scored and four RBI (13). It was the I-Cubs first three-homer game since Ian Stewart accomplished the feat on June 8 vs. Round Rock. It was the I-Cubs first five-hit game since Alfredo Amezaga on April 15, 2012, at Round Rock.
  • DH Ty Wright (.273) reached base four times, going 3-for-5 with a walk, a double (11) and two runs scored.
  • LF Darnell McDonald (.236) went 2-for-6 with a homer, a run scored, two RBI (26) and a stolen base (8).
  • RF Dave Sappelt (.240) went 2-for-6 with a homer, a run scored and two RBI (36).
  • CF Jae-Hoon Ha (.250) extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine games (.361/13-for-36), going 1-for-5 with a walk and a run scored.
  • RHP Nick Struck (6-8, 6.17) earned the win in relief, walking one and fanning one in 1.0 scoreless inning.

Tennessee Smokies (25-19)

Making his first start since being placed on the disabled list July 31 with arm fatigue, LHP Eric Jokisch tossed a no-hitter as Tennessee blanked host Jacksonville 10-0.

  • LHP Eric Jokisch faced 31 batters, throwing 108 pitches, 69 for strikes. Of the 13 balls put into play, nine were groundouts and four fly outs. It marks Tennessee’s first no-hitter since Mark Holliman accomplished the feat in a seven-inning, 3-0 victory against Huntsville in 2007. Jokisch (.250) also went 2-for-4 with a walk, a run and an RBI (1) at the dish.
  • SS Javier Baez (.273) recorded his fourth straight multihit effort, going 4-for-6 with two doubles (8), three runs scored, three RBI (27) and a stolen base (5).
  • RF Rubi Silva (.288) reached base four times, going 3-for-5 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI (45).
  • CF Matt Szczur (2-for-5, BB, 2B, R), C Rafael Lopez (2-for-4, BB, R, RBI) and 2B Jonathan Mota (2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI, SB) added two hits apiece.

Kane County Cougars (15-28)

Kane County collected 11 hits in a 6-2 victory at Clinton.

  • 2B Gioskar Amaya (.269) went 3-for-5 with a double (23), two runs scored, an RBI (26) and a stolen base (12).
  • CF Oliver Zapata (.253) reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk, a homer, a run scored, three RBI (42) and a stolen base (11).
  • C Carlos Escobar (.252) went 2-for-4 with a double (8) and a run scored.

Boise Hawks (6-7)

The South beat the North 8-7 in the Northwest League All-Star Game at Everett Memorial Stadium.

  • 1B Jacob Rogers (1-for-3, RBI) was the lone Hawks position player to record a hit.
  • C Lance Rymel went 0-for-2 with a run scored, SS Carlos Penalver and DH Yasiel Balaguert each went 0-for-2, and 2B David Bote went 0-for-1. Balaguert also competed in the Home Run Derby, hitting two homers.
  • RHP James Pugliese secured a hold (0.2 IP, 1 K).
  • RHP Tyler Bremer converted the save (0.1 IP, 1 K).

Mesa Cubs (5-5)

Mesa’s three-game winning streak came to an end, as the Cubs dropped a 2-1 pitchers’ duel at the AZL Dodgers.

  • 1B Kevin Brown (.200) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • C Wilfredo Petit (.203) was 2-for-4 with a double (1) and an RBI (11).

Mesa was the only squad to pick up a win Monday, as Iowa lost in walk-off fashion, Tennessee continued its losing streak and Kane County couldn’t wake up its bats. Daytona was rained out for the third day in a row while Boise is at the All-Star break. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (52-65)

Tacoma’s Brad Bantz belted a walk-off, solo home run in the ninth inning to beat the Cubs, 6-5. Iowa has lost 10 of its last 11 games.

  • LF Darnell McDonald (.233) recorded a season-high four hits, going 4-for-5 with a run scored, a double (13), a home run and one RBI (24).
  • 1B Brad Nelson (.267) went 2-for-4 with a fifth-inning, solo home run.
  • 2B Dan Lockhart (.444) posted his second straight multihit game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and one stolen base (1).
  • CF Jae-Hoon Ha (.252) extended his hitting streak to a season-high eight games, going 1-for-4 with a run scored and a double (9). He’s hitting .387 (12-for-31) during the streak.

Tennessee Smokies (24-19)

Tennessee dropped its fourth straight game, falling at Jacksonville, 6-4.

  • SS Javier Baez (.252) registered his third straight multihit effort, going 2-for-4 with a walk, a double (6), one RBI (24) and a stolen base (4).
  • RF John Andreoli (.301) went 3-for-4 with a double (9), two RBI (13) and one stolen base (9).
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.263) went 1-for-5 with a double (29), extending his hitting streak to four games.
  • RHP Tony Zych (2.74) tossed 1.1-scoreless innings of relief. He’s holding right-handed hitters to a .206 batting average (22-for-107) this season.

Kane County Cougars (14-28)

Kane County managed just four hits in a 12-4 loss at Clinton.

  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.253) went 1-for-4 with a first-inning, solo home run.

Iowa finally snapped its ugly losing streak behind a strong outing from right-hander Jake Arrieta, Boise overcame a four-run deficit and Mesa made it back-to-back wins Sunday. Tennessee and Kane County were both on the losing end however while Daytona’s game was postponed due to excessive flooding. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (52-64)

Iowa snapped its 12-game road losing skid, outslugging host Tacoma 8-4.

  • RHP Jake Arrieta gave up two hits, no runs and struck out 11 in five innings.
  • LF Darnell McDonald (.222) went 3-for-5 with a double (12) and a team-high three runs scored.
  • CF Jae-Hoon Ha (.252) extended his hitting streak to a season-high seven games (.407/11-for-27), going 3-for-5 with a double (8), two runs scored and a team-high three RBI (14).
  • 3B Mike Olt (.198) went 2-for-5 with a double (16), a triple (1) and two RBI (34).
  • 2B Dan Lockhart (.400) went 2-for-5 with a double (1) in his first game with Iowa.
  • C J.C. Boscan (.253) was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Tennessee Smokies (24-18)

Tennessee dropped its third straight game, surrendering six first-inning runs in a 10-4 loss at Jacksonville.
