Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/24/15

Eugene had a pair of big innings to secure its second win, and the Mesa bats led the way in a victory Wednesday. Iowa was rained out, while Tennessee, Myrtle Beach and South Bend wrapped up their All-Star breaks and will return to play Thursday. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Fourth Place (-2.0)

Eugene rallied for eight runs in the sixth and seventh innings to defeat visiting Boise, 8-3.

  • LHP Carson Sands (4.09) fanned six in 6.0 innings, giving up three earned runs in the no-decision.
  • 2B Frandy Delarosa (.240) went 2-for-4 with a triple (1) and a team-high four RBI (5).
  • SS Ho-young Son (.308) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base (2). He has three multi-hit games in his last four contests.
  • RF Ricardo Marcano (.308) went 2-for-4, his first multi-hit game of the season.
  • RHP Jae-Hoon Ha collected his first victory, striking out four batters in 2.0 hitless innings.

Mesa Cubs (2-2)
Arizona League (Rookie League)

The Mesa Cubs collected 11 hits to win their second straight, defeating the Angels, 6-5.

  • C Yohan Matos (.143) went 1-for-4 with a go-ahead, three-run homer in the fifth inning.
  • 3B Wladimir Galindo (.250) went 3-for-4 with a double (2).
  • SS Andruw Monasterio (.300) went 2-for-4 with two doubles (2) and a run scored.
  • LHP Carlos Rodriguez tossed 2.0 perfect frames to earn the win, fanning one.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/23/15

Mesa picked up its first win of the season Tuesday, Iowa got off to a slow start and couldn’t battle back, and Eugene continued its early-season struggles. Members of Tennessee, Myrtle Beach and South Bend competed in their respected leagues’ All-Star Games.

Third Place (-11.0)

Iowa was unable to overcome Omaha’s early lead and ultimately fell to the Storm Chasers, 4-2.

  • RF John Andreoli (.299) went 1-for-4 with a home run (2).
  • SS Ryan Dent (.278) went 1-for-3 with a double (3) and an RBI (3). He has recorded a hit in his last three appearances.
  • RHP Felipe Paulino (4.67) took the loss, but fanned a six batters in 5.2 innings.

Tennessee Smokies

Tennessee is off until Thursday for the All-Star break. Willson Contreras, Dan Vogelbach, Frank Batista, Corey Black, P.J. Francescon and Felix Pena represented the Smokies yesterday at the All-Star Game in Montgomery, Alabama.

  • 1B Dan Vogelbach crushed a three-run homer in the second inning to give the North All-Stars the lead. He also walked once, finishing 1-for-4.
  • C Willson Contreras went 1-for-2 and walked once.
  • RHP Felix Pena tossed a hitless frame and fanned one batter.
  • RHP Frank Batista tossed a scoreless frame, giving up just one hit and walking one batter.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

Myrtle Beach is off until Thursday for the All-Star break. Jeimer Candelario, Duane Underwood, Jonathan Martinez and Mark Zagunis represented the Pelicans at the All-Star Game yesterday in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

  • 3B Jeimer Candelario went 2-for-4 with a double.
  • RF-CF Mark Zagunis went 2-for-5 and plated one.
  • RHP Jonathan Martinez tossed a shutout inning, allowing just one hit and fanning one batter.

South Bend Cubs

South Bend is off until Thursday for the All-Star break. Cael Brockmeyer, Charcer Burks, Gleyber Torres, Jeremy Null and James Farris represented the SB-Cubs at the All-Star Game yesterday in Peoria, Illinois.

  • RHP Jeremy Null earned the win and was named game MVP after giving up just one hit and fanning three batters in a scoreless first inning.
  • RF Charcer Burks walked once and earned an RBI despite going 0-for-1.

  • RHP Adbert Alzolay (0.00) took the loss in his first outing of the season. He allowed one run off two hits and fanned four batters in 2.0 innings on the mound.

  • Mesa was 1-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

Tennessee, Myrtle Beach and South Bend all headed into the All-Star break with victories on Sunday. Iowa collected 15 hits in a losing effort, while one bad inning resulted in a Eugene loss. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa collected 15 hits and scored eight runs, but dropped a 14-8 decision at Round Rock.

  • CF Rubi Silva (.273) went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer (6), a run scored and three RBI (26).
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.267) went 3-for-6 with a double (10), a run scored and an RBI (24).
  • LF Junior Lake (.273) went 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base (5). He has hit safely in four of five games (6-for-16) since returning to Iowa.

Tennessee finished the season’s first half with its third straight win, a 9-2 triumph over Mississippi.

  • RHP Ryan Williams (2.53) gave up one earned run in 6.0 innings to pick up his third win.
  • 3B Mike Olt (.444) made his third rehab appearance, going 1-for-3 with a double (2), two walks and two runs scored. He is 4-for-9 with two doubles, one triple and five runs scored in the three games.
  • RHP Neil Ramirez (0.00) fanned all three batters he faced in his second rehab outing.
  • 2B Stephen Bruno (.290) went 3-for-4 with a double (7) and three RBI (26).

The Pelicans collected 12 hits to roll to a 4-1 victory over Lynchburg, completing the first half of the season. Myrtle Beach captured the First Half Southern Division Championship at 41-28.

  • RHP Daury Torrez (4.37) fanned five to pick up the win. He gave up one earned run in 6.0 innings of work.
  • DH Chesny Young (.364) went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored and is batting .366 (30-for-82) with 14 runs scored in 22 June contests.
  • LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.288) scored twice, going 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.273) extended his hitting streak to five games (7-for-18), going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Candelario is batting .300 (12-for-40) with six walks in 12 June games.

South Bend won its second straight game to close out the season’s first half, defeating West Michigan, 5-1.

  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.277) went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs (10), his first multi-homer game of the season. He is batting .316 (18-for-57) with five doubles and three homers in June.
  • 1B Chris Valaika (.260) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI (16).
  • LF John Andreoli (.298) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, his second straight multi-hit game.

It was a good day for Cubs affiliates as all four teams picked up wins Sunday. Iowa won in extras, Tennessee and Myrtle Beach were carried by solid pitching and South Bend ended a losing streak. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

  • SS Chris Valaika (.249) hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning, finishing 1-for-5 with a run and RBI.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.277) started the scoring with a three-run homer (8) in the first inning, finishing 2-for-4 with a walk, home run, run scored and three RBI (28).
  • CF John Andreoli (.292) reached base four times, going 2-for-3 with two walks, one run scored and an RBI (8).
