Cubs Minor League Recap: 7/8/15

The lower level clubs managed wins, but Iowa, Tennessee, Myrtle Beach and South Bend were unable to secure victories Wednesday. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Third Place (-9.0)

Iowa had its three-game winning streak snapped, falling at Omaha, 7-2.

  • C Kyle Schwarber (.351) homered for the second straight game, going 1-for-4 with a solo shot in the first inning.
  • LF Anthony Giansanti (.125) went 1-for-3 with a double and his first RBI of the campaign.
  • Iowa managed just one baserunner after the second inning. The club had three hits in the setback.

Tennessee Smokies (6-6)

Third Place (-3.0)

Tennessee lost for the fourth time in five games, falling at Birmingham, 4-3.

  • LF Bijan Rademacher (.249) had a game-high three hits, going 3-for-4 with a run and a RBI (26).
  • RF Billy McKinney (.308) and 2B Sutton Whiting (.667) had two hits apiece.

Eugene won its fourth straight contest, topping Vancouver, 8-4. The Emeralds scored eight runs in the sixth inning.

It was a successful day for Cubs minor league squads, with affiliates going 5-1 overall on Tuesday. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa won its third straight game, besting New Orleans, 8-3, and taking the five-game series, 3-2.

  • C Kyle Schwarber (.358) went 3-for-5, blasted a solo homer (2) and two doubles (7) while plated two (9) and scoring twice. He has four games of three or more hits at Iowa.
  • CF Matt Szczur (.293) went 2-for-4 with a leadoff home run (5), a double (7), an RBI (19), two runs scored and one walk. He has a four-game hitting streak (5-for-14).
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.257) had his sixth three-hit outing, going 3-for-5 with a stolen base (12) and two runs scored.
  • 1B Christian Villanueva (.267) went 2-for-5 with a three-run double (15).

Tennessee snapped a three-game losing skid, topping Birmingham on the road, 3-1.

  • RHP Pierce Johnson (1.14) picked up his third straight win and tossed a season-high 7.0 innings, giving up just one earned run. He has allowed just three runs in his last three outings (15.2 innings) and has yet to surrender a home run.
  • C Willson Contreras (.329) went 2-for-4, crushed a double (19) and plated two (39).
  • SS Elliot Soto (.264) went 3-for-5 with an RBI (16), a double (6) and one run scored.
  • LF Bijan Rademacher (.333) went 2-for-4, knocked a double (8) and scored once.

Myrtle Beach dropped its second straight game, falling to Winston-Salem, 3-1. The Pelicans were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

  • 1B Jacob Rogers (.256) went 1-for-3 with a double (14), an RBI (51) and a walk.
  • DH Mark Zagunis (.308) went 2-for-5, knocked a double (18) and scored once.
  • RHP Brad Markey (1.50) drew a no-decision in his first outing with the Pelicans and tossed a quality start, allowing just one run on four hits and fanning two batters.

South Bend scored two runs in the seventh to top Fort Wayne in a 2-1 come-from-behind victory.

  • 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.289) went 1-for-3 with a game-winning two-run homer in the seventh inning,  extending his hitting streak to five games (8-for-19/.421).
  • RHP Zach Hedges (3.84) earned the win and tossed a season-high 8.0 innings. It marked his fourth straight outing with 6.0 or more innings pitched and his third quality start in that stretch.
  • LHP Tyler Ihrig (2.04) completed his second save of the season after tossing a hitless frame and fanning two batters.

Eugene Emeralds (12-8)

First Place (+1.0)

Eugene won its third straight contest, topping Vancouver, 6-4. The Emeralds wrap up the five-game series against the Canadians tonight.

  • 2B Frandy Delarosa (.288) went 2-for-3 with a double (4), RBI (11), a walk and one run scored. It extended his hitting streak to a team-leading 11 games (13-for-38/.342).
  • LHP Justin Steele (1.23) earned his third consecutive win, striking out six in 5.0 innings while giving up one earned run. He has fanned 27 batters in four games (22.0 innings).
  • 1B Matt Rose (.308) went 1-for-4 with an RBI double (2) that plated two (9) and one run scored.
  • CF Ian Happ (.230) earned an RBI (8), scored once and drew two walks, despite going 0-for-3.
  • DH Ian Rice (.350) went 2-for-4, knocked a double and an RBI (3).

1B Jose Paniagua (.286) blasted the team’s first grand slam of the year in the third inning, helping the Cubs to a 9-2 victory over the AZL Padres.

  • All told, Paniagua went 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.
  • CF Robert Garcia (.372) went 2-for-5, crushed a triple (3), swiped a base (2) and scored twice.
  • RF Alex Bautista (.250) went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored.
  • RHP Jesus Camargo (1.29) earned his second win after tossing 4.0 scoreless innings of relief while fanning a season high seven batters. He has allowed just one earned run in 9.0 innings of relief.

Iowa took both games of its doubleheader and Eugene edged out a win Monday. But Tennessee, Myrtle Beach and South Bend all lost one-run contests while Mesa had the day off. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

  • LHP Jeffry Antigua (3.42) earned the win in Game Two, pitching 5.1 scoreless innings and adding three strikeouts.
  • 2B-CF Arismendy Alcantara (.251) went a combined 3-for-7 with three doubles (13) and an RBI (26).
  • LF Junior Lake (.283) went a combined 2-for-6 and hit a two-run homer (2) in the seventh inning of Game One.
  • C Taylor Davis (.283) and RF Jonathan Mota (.258) each went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the nightcap.

  • 2B Daniel Lockhart (.236) and CF Trey Martin (.245) each had RBI.
  • RHP Jeremy Null made his second start with Myrtle Beach, collecting his first quality start by pitching 6.0 innings, giving up two earned runs.

South Bend tallied nine runs and 14 hits but dropped a 12-inning contest against Fort Wayne, 10-9.

  • C Kyle Schwarber (.356) reached base twice, going 1-for-2 and walking once. He has reached base safely in six straight games.
  • 1B Taylor Davis (.281) also recorded a hit for the I-Cubs, going 1-for-3.
  • RHP Donn Roach tossed his sixth consecutive quality start but took the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work.

Tennessee was unable to overcome Birmingham’s early lead and fell to the Barons, 9-4.

Mesa dropped its second straight game following a four-game winning streak, falling to the AZL Mariners, 3-1.

  • LF Alex Bautista (.308) went 2-for-4 and drove in one run (2).
  • 3B Wladimir Galindo (.310) went 1-for-4 with a double (4) and one run scored.
  • RHP Jesus Camargo (1.80) gave up just one run while fanning five batters in 5.0 innings of relief.
  • RHP Jesus Castillo (7.36) tossed 2.0 scoreless frames and allowed just two hits.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/28/15

Iowa battled back for a win and Tennessee split a doubleheader, but everybody else was on the losing end Sunday. Here are some notes from yesterday’s action:

Iowa rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat New Orleans, 6-5.

  • LF Junior Lake (.306) went 2-for-4 with a double (7), two RBI (16) and a run scored. He has gone 9-for-14 (.643) with three doubles and four runs scored in his last four games.
  • 1B Mike Olt (.286) finished 2-for-4 with a double (3) and a run scored in his sixth rehab game with Iowa.
  • RF Rubi Silva (.268) collected two hits, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • SS Ryan Dent (.269) went 2-for-4 with a triple (1), a run scored and a season-high two RBI (5).

The Smokies split their doubleheader at Mobile, taking Game 1, 5-4, before falling in Game 2, 7-3.

  • 1B Dan Vogelbach (.286) went a combined 2-for-4 with a double (13), a home run (5), three walks, two runs scored and three RBI (34). His home run was a two-run shot in the second game.
  • C Taylor Davis (.348) went 2-for-3 with a solo home run (3) in Game 2. He is 6-for-12 with two doubles and three home runs in his last three starts.
  • C Willson Contreras (.330) and 2B Stephen Bruno (.293) each went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Game 1.

Myrtle Beach dropped its fourth straight game to begin the second half, falling 3-2 at Winston-Salem.

  • SS Chesny Young (.348) went 2-for-5 for his 11th multi-hit game in June.
  • 2B Daniel Lockhart (.222) extended his hitting streak to six games (9-for-22), going 2-for-4 with a double (8) and an RBI (15).
  • RHP Jonathan Martinez struck out five in 7.0 innings, giving up one earned run in the no-decision. He has allowed just one earned run in four of his last five outings and went 2-0 with a 2.42 ERA (7 ER/26.0 IP) in five June starts.

South Bend dropped its first game of the second half, falling 6-3 at Lake County.

  • SS Gleyber Torres (.319) went 2-for-3 with a walk, a home run, a run scored and two RBI (42).
  • DH Kevin Encarnacion (.267) went 2-for-4.
  • C Erick Castillo (.273) collected his first multi-hit game at South Bend, going 2-for-4.

Eugene surrendered eight runs in the eighth and ninth innings, falling 8-2 vs. Tri-City.

  • CF Ian Happ (.278) hit his third home run, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
  • C Ian Rice (.333) reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk.
  • LHP Andin Diaz has allowed just two earned runs on six hits in 9.2 IP in his first two starts after pitching 5.2 scoreless innings Sunday.

Mesa had its four-game winning streak snapped, dropping an 11-6 contest against the Giants.

  • SS Carlos Sepulveda (.296) went 2-for-5 with two RBI (3). He has hit safely in all six games (8-for-27).
  • CF Robert Garcia (.333) went 2-for-3 with a triple (1), a run scored and two RBI (7). Garcia is 5-for-8 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and six RBI in his last two games.
  • RHP Dylan Cease threw 2.0 perfect innings, fanning two batters.

Cubs Minor League Recap: 6/25/15

Iowa took both games of a doubleheader, and Tennessee, South Bend, Eugene and Mesa all captured victories as well on Thursday. Only Myrtle Beach was on the losing side. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

Iowa swept a doubleheader against visiting Omaha, winning Game 1, 3-2, in 10 innings on a Kyle Schwarber walk-off double. The I-Cubs then blanked the Storm Chasers in Game 2, 1-0.

  • RHP Dallas Beeler (6.79) struck out six in 6.1 innings of the first game, giving up two earned runs in the no-decision.
  • RHP Carlos Pimentel (3.15) fanned nine batters in 6.0 scoreless innings to pick up his sixth win of the year. He’s gone 4-1 with a 0.95 ERA in five June starts.
  • 3B Mike Olt (.429) went 3-for-4 with a home run (1) in Game 1 and followed that up with a pair of walks in the second game. He is 3-for-9 with a double and a home run in three rehab games at Iowa.
  • RHP Neil Ramirez (0.00) allowed one hit and fanned one batter in 0.2 scoreless innings in Game 1. It was his first rehab outing with Iowa (third overall).
  • DH Kyle Schwarber (.222) went 2-for-5 with a triple (1) and a walk-off RBI double in Game 1.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.277) went 2-for-2 and drove in the only run in the nightcap.

Taylor Davis hit two solo home runs to lift the Smokies past host Mobile, 2-1.

  • C Taylor Davis (.286) went 2-for-4 with the two home runs (2). He has five RBI in four games with the Smokies after starting the season at Triple-A Iowa.
  • LF Billy McKinney (.319) went 3-for-4, extending his hitting streak to six games (13-for-20), including three three-hit efforts. McKinney is batting .339 (20-for-59) in 18 June contests.
  • RHP Tayler Scott (2.30) collected his third win, striking out four batters in 2.1 scoreless frames.

The Pelicans dropped a 2-1 decision at Carolina to open the season’s second half.

  • LF Pin-Chieh Chen (.294) went 2-for-4 with a stolen base (10). He has five multi-hit games in his last nine contests and is hitting .321 (26-for-81) in 23 June games.
  • DH Daniel Lockhart (.214) went 2-for-4, extending his hitting streak to three games (5-for-11).
  • RF Mark Zagunis (.319) went 1-for-4 and scored the Pelicans only run.

South Bend Cubs (1-0)

South Bend opened the second half with a 4-3 victory at Lake County.

  • 3B Jason Vosler (.261) went 2-for-4 with his first homer of the season and two RBI (16).
  • SS Gleyber Torres (.315) went 2-for-4 with a triple (3) and a run scored. He has three multi-hit games in his last four contests.
  • RHP Zach Hedges tossed his fourth quality start of the season to collect the win, striking out five in 6.2 innings.

Eugene won its second straight game, topping visiting Boise, 3-1.

  • LHP Justin Steele (0.82) has allowed one earned run in 11.0 innings to begin his campaign. He struck out six in 6.0 innings, giving up just one earned run.

The Mesa Cubs scored three runs in the first inning and held on for a 6-4 win over the Angels.

  • 1B Joe Martarano (.294), LF Jose Paniagua (.267) and SS Carlos Jimenez (.429) all had multi-hit games.

Eugene had a pair of big innings to secure its second win, and the Mesa bats led the way in a victory Wednesday. Iowa was rained out, while Tennessee, Myrtle Beach and South Bend wrapped up their All-Star breaks and will return to play Thursday. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor league action:

  • RHP Jae-Hoon Ha collected his first victory, striking out four batters in 2.0 hitless innings.
