Minor League recap: 7/31/13

Javier Baez boosted Tennessee to a victory with another blast, and Elliot Soto’s RBI single gave Daytona a win. Kane County and Mesa also came out on top Wednesday night. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (51-61)

Iowa lost its sixth straight game, falling at Salt Lake 6-3. The Cubs fell a season-worst 10 games under .500 while dropping their ninth consecutive road game.

  • CF Jae-Hoon Ha (.235) posted his second straight two-hit contest, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
  • C J.C. Boscan (.251) went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, a double (9) and one RBI (18).
  • LF Darnell McDonald (.218) was 2-for-4 with a run scored, a double (10) and one RBI (23).
  • RHP Marcos Mateo (0.00) struck out three while tossing 1.1 scoreless innings of relief in his Iowa debut.

Tennessee Smokies (23-15)

Tennessee jumped back into first place with a 3-2 victory over visiting Birmingham.

  • SS Javier Baez (.221) went 1-for-3 with a third-inning two-run homer. His 11 July homers tied him for first in all of Double-A baseball.
  • 3B Christian Villanueva (.263) was 1-for-3 with a double (27). He has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games.
  • LHP Jeffry Antigua (1-0, 3.38) worked 2.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn his first win of the season.
  • RHP Frank Batista (2.44) converted his 14th save of the campaign with a scoreless ninth. He’s holding right-handed hitters to a .191 batting average (22-for-115).

Daytona Cubs (21-14-1)

Daytona’s Elliot Soto ripped an RBI single in the top of the ninth to lift the Cubs over Fort Myers 2-1.

  • RHP Ivan Pineyro pitched six scoreless innings, striking out seven, walking none and surrendering three hits.
  • DH Dustin Geiger (.284) went 1-for-4 with a fourth-inning solo home run.
  • SS Elliot Soto (.243) finished 1-for-4 with a walk and the game-winning RBI (9).
  • 1B Anthony Giansanti (.268) posted a season-high three hits, going 3-for-4 with a double (2).
  • RF Pin-Chieh Chen (.260) went 3-for-3 with a run scored.
  • RHP Austin Reed (2-0, 4.25) allowed one run on one hit in 2.0 innings of relief to earn his second win of the year.
  • LHP Frank Del Valle (2.70) converted his seventh save with a scoreless ninth.

Kane County Cougars (12-25)

Kane County won its second straight, beating visiting Wisconsin 6-3.

  • RHP Felix Pena went seven innings, allowing one earned run.
  • 1B Rock Shoulders (.263) clubbed his team-leading 17th homer of the campaign. He has registered multihit efforts in five of his last eight games.
  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.255) went 2-for-4 with an eighth-inning two-run homer.
  • 2B Gioskar Amaya (.270) snapped a three-game hitless skid, going 2-for-4 with a run scored, a double (22) and one RBI (25).
  • LHP Sheldon McDonald (1-0, 0.87) earned his first win of the season with a scoreless eighth inning of work.
  • RHP Michael Hamann (0.00) converted his fourth save while extending his scoreless innings streak to 9.0.

Boise Hawks (4-5)

Boise dropped a 7-4 decision at Everett. The Hawks have alternated wins and losses in seven straight games.

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.229) went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to six games.
  • RF Yasiel Balaguert (.278) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, a home run and three RBI (32).
  • 1B Jacob Rogers (.290) recorded his second consecutive multihit game, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and one RBI (30).

Mesa Cubs (2-3)

Mesa defeated the visiting the AZL Giants 2-1.

  • LHP Gerardo Concepcion pitched two innings, surrendering one hit. He had one strikeout and no earned runs.
  • 1B Kelvin Freeman (.261) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and a season-high two doubles (3).
  • RHP Josh Davis (3-0, 0.00) earned his team-leading third win, tossing 2.0 innings of relief. He hasn’t allowed a run in 8.1 innings of work with Mesa.
  • LHP David Villegas (2.12) converted his fifth save of the year with a scoreless ninth.

Kane County was powered by strong pitching efforts from Justin Amlung and Stephen Perakslis, and a big inning gave Boise all it needed Tuesday. Iowa, Tennessee, Daytona and Mesa were on the losing side of decisions. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (51-60)

Iowa lost its fifth straight game, falling at Salt Lake, 5-4.

  • CF Jae-Hoon Ha (.224) recorded Iowa’s lone multihit effort, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double (6), a home run and two RBI (10).
  • 1B Edwin Maysonet (.246) went 1-for-4 with a run scored, a double (6) and one RBI (24).
  • LF Dave Sappelt (.246) snapped a five-game hitless skid, going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
  • RHP Brian Schlitter (2.93) struck out two in a scoreless inning of work.

Tennessee Smokies (22-15)

Visiting Birmingham scored four runs in the top of the 13th inning to beat the Smokies 9-6.

  • 1B Justin Bour (.245) reached base four times, going 3-for-6 with a walk, a run scored, a double (11) and one RBI (40). He has hit safely in eight of his last nine games.
  • C Rafael Lopez (.251) posted his second straight multihit game, going 3-for-6 with a walk and a run scored.
  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.275) went 2-for-5 with two walks, a double (29) and two RBI (57).
  • RF Brett Jackson (.300) went 2-for-6 with a walk and one RBI (1).

Daytona Cubs (20-14-1)

Daytona dropped its second straight, falling at Fort Myers 5-2.

  • LF Taiwan Easterling (.219) went 1-for-4 with a run scored. He has hit safely in seven of his last eight games.
  • RHP Dayan Diaz (2.45) struck out a season-high seven hitters in 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.
  • LHP Jeffrey Lorick (2.90) extended his scoreless innings streak to 8.0 with a spotless ninth inning of work.

Kane County (11-25)

Kane County scored two runs over the final two frames to beat visiting Wisconsin 4-2.

  • RHP Justin Amlung pitched three scoreless innings, striking out three.
  • RF Reggie Golden (.252) went 1-for-4 with a second-inning solo home run. Five of his six homers this season have been solo shots.
  • C Carlos Escobar (.258) registered his seventh multihit game, going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
  • LHP Nathan Dorris (6-3, 2.81) allowed two runs on six hits in 4.0 innings of relief to earn his sixth win of the year.

Boise Hawks (4-4)

Boise used a five-run sixth inning to defeat visiting Spokane 5-3.

  • 3B Kris Bryant (.226) recorded his first professional multihit game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and his third double of the campaign. He has hit safely in five straight contests.
  • 1B Jacob Rogers (.283) and C Cael Brockmeyer (.319) each recorded two hits.

Of the Cubs minor league affiliates, only Tennessee picked up a win yesterday, moving them back into first place in the Southern League’s North Division. But there was some good news. Scott Baker had an effective rehab start in Daytona, Dan Vogelbach mashed his 16th home run, and Kris Bryant continued to get his feet under him at Boise. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (51-59)

Iowa lost its fourth straight game, falling at Oklahoma City 4-3.

  • RF Ty Wright (.268) went 2-for-4 with a fourth-inning, solo home run.
  • 2B Logan Watkins (.246) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double (18). He has hit safely in seven of his last eight games.
  • 1B Edgar Gonzalez (.311) recorded his second straight two-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a stolen base (2).
  • SS Donnie Murphy (.263) was 1-for-4 with a run scored, a triple (2) and one RBI (41). He has registered a hit in 14 of his last 15 contests.

Tennessee Smokies (22-14, second half)

Tennessee jumped back into first place with an 8-4 victory over visiting Birmingham.

Daytona had its five-game winning streak snapped in a 5-0 loss at Fort Myers.

  • RHP Pierce Johnson (2.90) made his first relief appearance of the season, striking out seven and allowing three runs in 4.0 innings of work.
  • CF Zeke DeVoss (.250) recorded three of Daytona’s five hits, going 3-for-4 with two doubles (11).
  • LF Taiwan Easterling (.218) went 1-for-4. He has hit safely in six of his last seven games.

Kane County Cougars (10-25, second half)

Kane County managed just four hits in a 14-1 setback at Peoria.

  • DH Dan Vogelbach (.290) extended his hitting streak to five games with a sixth inning solo home run.
  • 1B Rock Shoulders (.261) went 1-for-3. He has hit safely in seven of his last eight contests.
  • LHP Al Yevoli (2.70) allowed a run on four hits in 2.1 innings of relief.

Boise Hawks (3-4, second half)

Boise recorded only two hits in a 5-2, 11-inning loss to Spokane.

  • LF Jose Dore (.200) went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to three games.

The Cubs minor league affiliates played .500 ball Sunday, with Daytona, Kane County and Boise all picking up wins. Newcomer C.J. Edwards, acquired in the Matt Garza trade, made an impressive debut with Daytona, Javy Baez continues to crush the ball, and top draft pick Kris Bryant homered for the second time in three games. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (51-58)

Iowa lost its third straight game, falling at Oklahoma City 4-3.

  • RF Ty Wright (.261) recorded a season-high-tying three hits, going 3-for-4 with a run scored, three doubles (11) and one RBI (19).
  • C Luis Flores (.189) went 2-for-4 with one RBI (13).

Iowa, Tennessee, Daytona and Kane County all picked up wins Thursday, while Boise lost a one-run game and errors proved costly for Mesa. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (51-55)

Iowa split the four-game series against New Orleans with a 4-3 victory.

  • RHP Jake Arrieta picked up the win, going 6.2 innings with one earned run and eight strikeouts.
  • SS Donnie Murphy (.264) extended his hitting streak to 12 games, going 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a double (16). He’s hitting .278 (15-for-54) with seven RBI during the streak.
  • 3B Josh Vitters (.289) went 1-for-2 with one RBI (11).

Only Tennessee managed a win on Wednesday, snapping a three-game skid, while Iowa, Kane County and Boise ended up on the wrong side of the ledger. Daytona’s game was canceled due to unplayable conditions, and Mesa had the day off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa dropped its fifth game in its last six contests, falling in 10 innings at home against New Orleans 2-1.

  • 1B Brad Nelson (.265) went 3-for-5, recording his second straight multihit game.

It was a good day for the Cubs’ minor league affiliates. Iowa earned a walk-off win, Daytona split a doubleheader, Boise opened up the second half with a victory and Mesa cruised. Tennessee was unable to snap its losing streak while Kane County had the day off. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (50-54)

Iowa snapped its four-game losing streak, defeating visiting New Orleans 1-0 in walk-off fashion.

  • RHP Guillermo Moscoso gave up one hit in five scoreless innings of work, striking out nine. He’s 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA (7 ER/30.1 IP) and 29 strikeouts in five July starts.
  • 3B Edwin Maysonet’s (.260) two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Cubs. He finished 1-for-4 with the RBI (23), extending his hitting streak to three games.
  • 2B Logan Watkins (.247) recorded his 22nd multihit game, going 2-for-4.

GM 2: Daytona used a three-run first inning to cruise past St. Lucie 7-0.

  • RF Taiwan Easterling (.208) went 1-for-3 with an RBI (24) and two stolen bases (8).

  • RHP Pierce Johnson recorded his third straight victory and has now allowed just one earned run in his last 16.0 innings of work (0.56 ERA).
  • LHP Frank Del Valle (2.83) preserved the shutout with two scoreless innings of relief.

Boise Hawks (1-0)

Boise opened the second half of the season with their third straight shutout, beating host Eugene 6-0. The Hawks have won 10 of their last 11 games.

  • LF Charcer Burks (.179) and 1B Kelvin Freeman (.264) each recorded a hit while driving in a run.

The lower levels were victorious, as Boise wrapped up its first half with a win and Mesa secured a one-run victory Monday. Iowa, Tennessee and Kane County all lost, and Daytona was rained out. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (49-54)

Iowa dropped a 9-2 decision to visiting New Orleans in a rain-shortened, seven-inning affair. The Cubs have lost four straight games.

  • SS Donnie Murphy (.264) extended his hitting streak to nine games with a third-inning solo home run. He’s hitting .300 (12-for-40) with two home runs and six RBI during the streak.
  • 1B Brad Nelson (.259) recorded his 22nd multihit game of the season, going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double (16).
  • LF Edgar Gonzalez (.381) went 1-for-3 with a double (4) and an RBI (2). He’s hit safely in five of his last six games.

Tennessee Smokies (18-11)

Visiting Jacksonville used a three-run eighth inning to beat the Smokies 5-4.

  • 1B Justin Bour (.233) went 2-for-4 with a fourth-inning solo home run.
  • C Rafael Lopez (.229) was 2-for-4 with a double (18) and a season-high three RBI (27).
  • LF/RF Rubi Silva (.278) went 2-for-4 with a run scored, extending his hitting streak to eight games. He’s hitting .313 (10-for-32) during the streak.
  • RHP Kyle Hendricks received a no-decision despite allowing no earned runs in seven innings. The All-Star owns a 0.60 ERA (2 ER/30.0 IP) with 26 strikeouts in his last five starts.

Kane County Cougars (7-22)

Kane County had its two-game winning streak snapped with a 5-2 loss to Lansing.

  • LF Reggie Golden (.240) homered for the second straight game, going 1-for-4 with the clout and two RBI (13).
  • 1B Dan Vogelbach (.293) extended his hitting streak to nine games, going 1-for-3 with two walks. He’s hitting .500 (16-for-32) during the streak.
  • DH Rock Shoulders (.248) doubled for the second straight game, going 1-for-5 with his 17th two-bagger.
  • RHP Justin Amlung (4.88) and RHP Stephen Perakslis (3.45) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

Boise Hawks (21-17)

Boise wrapped up the first half of the season, recording its second straight three-hit shutout to beat visiting Everett 10-0. The Hawks have won nine of their last 10 games.

  • 1B Jacob Rogers (.287) went 2-for-5 with a double (5), a home run and one RBI (25).
  • 2B Dan Lockhart (.310) and DH Lance Rymel (.324) recorded two hits apiece while driving in a run.
  • C Cael Brockmeyer (.352) recorded his fourth multihit effort in his last five games, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI (8).
  • 3B Jordan Hankins (.247) went 2-for-5 with a run scored, a double (3) and one RBI (4).
  • LHP Sam Wilson (1-0, 0.00) earned his first professional win, tossing two scoreless innings of relief while striking out four.

Mesa Cubs (12-13)

Mesa got past the visiting AZL Royals with a 2-1 victory.

  • CF David DeJesus (.375) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double (2) and one stolen base (1) in the third game of his rehabilitation assignment.
  • 3B Kris Bryant (.167) recorded his first professional hit and RBI, going 1-for-3 with a double (1) and two RBI (2). He has since been promoted to Boise.
  • RHP Josh Davis (2-0, 0.00) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief, earning his second win of the season.
  • RHP Trevor Graham (1.50) recorded the final six outs to convert his first save.

Kane County won in walk-off fashion and Boise’s bats came, but Iowa, Tennessee, Daytona and Mesa all took losses Sunday. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa (49-53)

Iowa dropped its third straight game, falling at Round Rock 3-0.

  • RHP Barret Loux gave up three hits over five innings, striking out five and walking five.
  • DH Donnie Murphy (.264) extended his hitting streak to eight games, going 1-for-4 with a double (15). He’s hitting .306 (11-for-36) during the streak.
  • 3B Josh Vitters (.306) was 1-for-2 with a walk. He’s hit safely in five straight games.
  • RHP Alberto Cabrera (0.00) struck out two while tossing two scoreless innings of relief in his Iowa debut.

Tennessee Smokies (18-10)

Tennessee managed just three hits in an 8-1 setback versus Jacksonville. The Smokies were outhit 18-3 and committed six errors.

  • 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.284) went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a double (26). He has recorded a double in three straight games.
  • SS Javier Baez (.216) extended his hitting streak to three games, going 1-for-4 with a double (2).
  • LF Rubi Silva (.276) went 1-for-4 with a double (20), extending his hitting streak to seven games.
  • LHP Hunter Cervenka (4.84) struck out two in two scoreless innings of relief.

Daytona Cubs (15-11-1)

Daytona failed to win its fifth straight game (including one tie), dropping a 7-5 decision to St. Lucie.

  • SS Elliot Soto (.267) went 1-for-3 with a run scored, two RBI (8) and one stolen base (2).

Kane County Cougars (7-21)

Kane County defeated visiting Lansing 6-5 in walk-off fashion (10 innings).

  • DH Dan Vogelbach (.292) knocked in the game-winning run with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning. He finished 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI (62).

  • RF Reggie Golden (.240) went 2-for-5 with a second-inning solo home run.
  • RHP Michael Hamann (1-0, 0.00) allowed three hits in two scoreless innings, earning his first win of the year.

Boise Hawks (20-7)

Boise collected 16 hits in a 7-0 victory over visiting Everett.

  • LF Yasiel Balaguert (.276) went 1-for-4 with a walk, a run scored, a double (7) and one RBI (25).

Iowa rallied from behind while Boise extended its winning streak and Mesa picked up a victory in the ninth Thursday. Tennessee and Kane County both fell, and Daytona was rained out. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s action.

Iowa Cubs (49-50)

Iowa plated two runs in the sixth inning and four more in the eighth, rallying past host Round Rock 6-3.

  • SS Donnie Murphy (.261) went 2-for-4 with a double (14), a homer, two runs scored and four RBI (38).
  • RHP Yoanner Negrin (3-3, 4.57) earned the win in relief, allowing a hit while fanning two in a scoreless seventh frame.
  • RHP Brian Schlitter (1.52) converted his 12th save, striking out the side in a perfect ninth inning of relief.

Tennessee Smokies (16-9)

Tennessee committed four errors in a 7-6 loss to visiting Jacksonville.

  • 1B Justin Bour (.231) went 2-for-4.

Boise extended its winning streak to six games, plating three seventh-inning runs to rally past visiting Everett 3-2.
