Cubs Minor League Report: 8/15/16

Iowa’s bullpen picked up the slack, Tennessee and Myrtle Beach each scored convincing wins, South Bend edged out Bowling Green, and Eugene extended its streak Monday. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor-league Cubs action.

Iowa Cubs (54-69)
Pacific Coast League (Triple-A)
Third Place (-16.0)

Iowa took the series over Fresno with a 6-4 victory, thanks in part to four scoreless innings from the bullpen.

  • C Tim Federowicz (.290) was 2-for-5 with a homer (7), three RBI (31), two runs scored and a stolen base (3). It’s his third homer in his last four games. In 38 games since rejoining Iowa on July 2, he is batting .288 (40-for-139) with five homers, four doubles and 24 RBI.
  • SS Kristopher Negron (.251) was 1-for-2 with a homer (7), two RBI (41), a run scored and a sacrifice bunt.
  • RF Bijan Rademacher (.222) had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • LF Juan Perez (.276) recorded a double (26) and scored once.
  • RHP Spencer Patton (1 IP) notched his 11th save of the season and extended his scoreless streak to 16 innings pitched by tossing a perfect frame.

Tennessee Smokies (20-29)

Tennessee staved off a sweep with a 9-4 victory over host Pensacola.

  • CF Lane Adams (.225) socked his first homer with Tennessee, a two-run shot in the seventh inning. He was 3-for-4 with three RBI (3) and three runs scored.
  • LF Kelly Dugan (.232) also had a three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with an RBI (32), two runs scored and a walk.
  • SS Carlos Penalver (.215) and 2B Chesny Young (.295) both had two hits, including a double. Young drove in two runs (28), while Penalver dove in one (32) and scored twice.
  • RHP Zach Hedges (1.50 ERA) tossed his third straight scoreless outing, going five innings and striking out four. He has not allowed a run in 19 consecutive innings.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans (32-19)

  • 2B David Bote (.317) was 2-for-4 with two doubles (19) and two RBI (26). It’s his third straight multi-hit game.
  • 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.253) and RF Jeffrey Baez (.247) both were 2-for-4. Baez added a double (14).
  • LF Daniel Spingola (.215) reached twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk. He also scored once.
  • RHP Jake Stinnett (4.27 ERA) picked up the win, tossing seven innings of one-run ball and fanning six. He has gone six or more innings in nine of his 20 starts this season.

South Bend Cubs (33-17)

Despite being outhit, South Bend came from behind to top host Bowling Green, 3-2.

  • RF Eddy Martinez (.261) was 1-for-3 with a double (21), the lone South Bend extra-base hit. He also scored a run and walked once.
  • CF Connor Myers (.266) was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI (9) and a sacrifice bunt. This year’s 27th-round pick out of Old Dominion has driven in six runs in his last five games.
  • LF Roberto Caro (.242) reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk and one run scored.
  • RHP Casey Bloomquist (2.72 ERA) surrendered one earned run in seven innings, striking out two and walking none in the win. In nine starts this season, he has yet to allow more than three earned runs.

The Ems extended their winning streak to 11 straight by beating Spokane, 6-3.

  • 2B Stephen Bruno (.368) was 4-for-5 with three RBI (5) and a run scored. He has played six games with Eugene as part of a minor-league rehabilitation assignment from Tennessee.
  • CF D.J. Wilson (.263) was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles (12) and three runs scored.
  • SS Yeiler Peguero (.257) went 2-for-4 with a double (9), an RBI (16), a run scored and a walk.
  • C Tyler Payne (.260) was 1-for-4 with a double (5) and a run scored.
  • RHP Erling Moreno has yet to allow an earned run in three starts (15 IP) with Eugene. He has punched out 11 compared to only three walks.

Mesa Cubs (5-11)

Mesa was swept in a twinbill against the AZL Giants. The second game was a makeup of a postponed contest from Aug. 2.

  • C/PH Jhonny Pereda (.302) went a combined 3-for-4 with a double (4) and an RBI (19) between the two contests.
  • C Gustavo Polanco (.317) slugged a solo homer (1) in the second game. He was 1-for-4.
  • SS Isaac Paredes (.294) was a combined 3-for-7 with an RBI (18), a walk and a stolen base (4). He has a hit in an organization-best 13 straight games.
  • RHP Javier Assad (2.60 ERA) gave up no runs in five innings, striking out three and walking one. He has not allowed an earned run in five of his last seven starts.
  • RHP Duane Underwood Jr. tossed one scoreless inning, making his first appearance with Mesa. He is currently on a minor-league rehabilitation assignment from Tennessee. He struck out two.

All four affiliates in action picked up victories on Monday. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor-league Cubs action.

Iowa batters collected seven extra-base hits and went 7 for 13 with runners in scoring position en route to a 13-0 rout over Omaha.

  • LHP Rob Zastryzny (4.37 ERA) threw five perfect innings while striking out eight. He has allowed only two hits and two earned runs over his last three appearances (11 IP).
  • RF Juan Perez (.281) was 3 for 5 with a double (23), a grand slam (8), five RBI (46) and a run scored.
  • SS-LF Kristopher Negron (.238) went 1 for 4 with a three-run homer. Overall, he had four RBI (34), two runs scored and a walk.
  • CF John Andreoli (.253) and DH Taylor Davis (.259) both collected three hits.
  • 1B Cael Brockmeyer (.210) and 3B Jeimer Candelario (.303) each had two-hit games. Brockmeyer had two doubles (4) and two runs, while Candelario added a double (12), a homer, two RBI (26) and a run.
  • RHP Justin Grimm (1 IP, 1 H, 3 SO) made his first appearance since being optioned.

  • C Victor Caratini (.292), DH David Freitas (.304) and 3B Gioskar Amaya (.167) each had multi-hit games.

  • LF Charcer Burks (.245) tripled (4), scored a run, walked and recorded a stolen base (22).
  • 3B Jesse Hodges (.314) added a multi-hit game, going 2 for 4. It extended his hitting streak to seven straight games (.407/11 for 27).
  • RF Jeffrey Baez (.225) finished 1 for 4 with a double (9) and an RBI (27).

South Bend and Great Lakes both had seven hits but the SB-Cubs prevailed, 5-1.

  • LF Eloy Jimenez (.342) finished 2 for 5 with two doubles (35) and two RBI (72). His 72 RBI are nine more than the next-closest Midwest League batter. He also extended his hitting streak to eight games (.567/17 for 30).
  • RF Eddy Martinez (.272) was 2 for 4 with an RBI (59) and a walk.
  • 1B Alberto Mineo (.354) reached base three times, going 1 for 3 with two walks. He also scored twice.
  • LHP Justin Steele is 1-0 with a 3.57 ERA (7 ER/17.2 IP) over five starts since rejoining South Bend from Eugene after pitching five scoreless innings Monday. He struck out seven in the win.

Cubs Minor League Report: 7/13/16

Myrtle Beach battled back to pick up a win, but they were the only Cubs side to come out on top Wednesday. Here are some highlights from yesterday’s minor-league Cubs action.

The Smokies dropped the rubber game of the five-game set vs. Chattanooga, 11-1.

  • 2B Ian Happ (.364) was 2 for 4, snapping a three-game hitless skid.
  • SS Carlos Penalver (.207) went 2 for 3 with an RBI (26). It was his first multi-hit game since June 5.
  • The Smokies collected seven hits, all singles, in the setback.
  • RHP Starling Peralta (4 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 SO) tied a season-high with four scoreless innings pitched.

Myrtle Beach rallied from a 4-1 deficit to defeat visiting Frederick, 5-4.

Eugene dropped its third straight game, falling 3-2 at Tri-City to open up a five-game set.

  • SS Yeiler Peguero (.284) went 2 for 4, his eighth multi-hit game of the season.
  • LF Kevonte Mitchell (.205) and C Tyler Payne (.289) each singled and scored a run. Payne has scored a run in four straight and five of the last six games.
  • RHP M.T. Minacci (2.1 IP, 1 H, 2 SO) allowed just one hit in 2.1 innings of relief.

Cubs Minor League Report: 5/4/16

Iowa got a big game from one of its top prospects, and Myrtle Beach grabbed a shutout victory Wednesday. Tennessee surrendered the lead late, while South Bend gave up one big inning in a loss. Here are some notes from yesterday’s minor-league Cubs action:

  • DH Dan Vogelbach (.354) went 3 for 5 with a go-ahead grand slam in the sixth inning, five RBI (21) and two runs scored. He has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games.
  • C Willson Contreras (.338) did not record an official at-bat, picking up four walks and two runs scored. He already has two games this season with four walks drawn.
  • RF John Andreoli (.202) went 1 for 3 with a walk and two RBI (13).

RF Eloy Jimenez hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth to lift South Bend to a 7-6 victory.

  • CF Eddy Martinez (.375) went 2 for 4 with a solo homer (1) in the fourth inning, his first professional home run. He has three multi-hit efforts in four games this season.
  • LF Donnie Dewees (.353) went 2 for 5 with a double (1) and two RBI (3).
  • SS Bryant Flete (.625) went 2 for 3 with a double (1) and two runs scored. He has gone 5 for 8 in his first three games.
  • All nine starters either reached base or scored a run.

Iowa held off a short-lived comeback attempt, Daytona battled back to grab a win, Kane County’s late push fell short and Tennessee was rained out. Here are some highlights from Sunday’s action:

Iowa Cubs (16-24)

Iowa led 7-2 after five innings and held on for a 7-3 victory over Tucson, splitting the four-game set.

  • 1B Brad Nelson (.286) went 2-for-4 with a double (8), a homer (7), two runs and a season-high five RBI (31).
  • CF Dave Sappelt (.225) collected his second multi-hit effort in his last three games, going 2-for-4 with two runs.
  • SS Donnie Murphy (.284) singled and homered in four at-bats, hitting safely for the eighth time in nine games.
  • RHP Nick Struck earned his second consecutive win after starting the season winless in his first five starts.

Daytona Cubs (21-20)

Daytona came from behind to defeat Lakeland 5-4, sweeping the four-game, road series.

  • DH Dustin Geiger (.333) blasted a go-ahead, solo home run in the eighth inning, extending his hitting streak to seven games (.536/15-for-28).
  • 1B Taylor Davis (.240) collected his first multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • SS Javier Baez (.256) extended his hitting streak to six games (.360/9-for-25), going 1-for-3 with a walk and a run.
  • LHP Jeff Lorick (2-0, 0.00) scattered three hits in two scoreless frames, earning the win in relief. He has yet to allow a run in 5.1 innings this season (four appearances).
  • RHP Luis Liria (2 IP) converted his first save in his third-straight, scoreless appearance (5 IP).

Kane County Cougars (20-21)

Kane County scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning, tying the game 7-7 at Cedar Rapids, but fell in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth, 8-7.

  • RF Bijan Rademacher (.343) collected his third, multi-hit effort in his last six games, going 2-for-4 with two runs.
  • 3B Jeimer Candelario (.248) went 2-for-4 with a double (15) and a run scored. He has hit safely in five-straight games (.400/8-for-20).
  • LF Rock Shoulders (.300) hit his 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth inning.
  • SS David Bote (.182) went 1-for-4 with his first home run of the season, a game-tying, two-run blast with two outs in the ninth inning.

Iowa, Daytona and Kane County were all off Wednesday, while Tennessee’s late-innings comeback was stopped short. Here are the highlights from last night’s Smokies game:

Tennessee Smokies (11-9)

Tennessee scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning and had the winning run at the plate, but lost 5-4 to visiting Montgomery.

  • RHP Matt Loosen (0-0) went 4.2 innings, striking out three and surrendered two earned runs.
  • SS Arismendy Alcantara (.288) went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double (2), an RBI (14) and a stolen base (12). He leads the Southern League in stolen bases (12) and has not yet been caught stealing.
  • 1B Ty Wright (.222) singled, doubled and knocked in two runs in four at-bats in his second game with Tennessee after starting the season at Iowa.
  • RF Matt Szczur (.295) went 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. He has scored a run in 15 of 20 games this season and leads the Southern League with 20 runs.
  • C Rafael Lopez (.186) extended his hitting streak to four games (.417/5-for-12) with a fifth-inning double (4). He went 1-for-2 with two walks.
