1000 Words: Moon over Wrigley

In the upcoming December issue of Vine Line, we’ll be featuring the photos of the year from 2012. We couldn’t find space in the magazine for all the great shots, so we’ll start posting some of the extras here on the blog. Now that the holidays are fast approaching and the days are getting alarmingly short, this one seemed appropriate to start us off.

1000 Words: Cutler and the Shark

Jeff Samardzija and Bears quarterback Jay Cutler dominated the gridiron, the hardwood and the baseball diamond in their Indiana high school days more than a decade ago. And they continue to dominate their respective sports. Samardzija was solid in his first year in the Cubs’ rotation, while Cutler currently has the 6-1 Bears sitting atop the NFC North division. Cutler stopped by Wrigley Field in July to throw out the first pitch and sing the stretch.

1000 Words: Bryan LaHair walks off as season winds down

With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth of Wednesday’s season finale, Bryan LaHair ripped a single to right field to give the Cubs a 5-4 victory. The 2012 All-Star also hit a solo home run in the second inning to knot the game at 1-1.

1000 Words: Cubs walk off in Game 162

Despite a difficult year on the field in 2012, the Cubs ended the season in exciting fashion, when Bryan LaHair smacked a bases-loaded line drive into right field to give the Cubs a walk-off 5-4 victory over the Astros at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs finished the 2012 season with a 61-101 record.

1000 Words: Volstad gets the ‘W’

What’s an extra 30 minutes when you’ve already waited 413 days? Right-hander Chris Volstad (1-9) earned his first win in a Cubs uniform—and his first in 24 starts—yesterday in a rain-shortened 5-0 affair with the Colorado Rockies. Volstad scattered three hits over 6 2/3 innings for his first victory since July 17, 2011, when he was a member of the then-Florida Marlins. The game was delayed for more than two hours at the outset, and was finally called after eight innings and another 30-minute delay.

1000 Words: Hero’s Welcome

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo launched a two-run, walk off home run in the 10th inning Sunday to lead the Cubs to a 4-2 win over the division rival Cardinals. In 27 games, Rizzo is batting .333 with 7 home runs and 17 RBI.
