Five minutes with … Daryle Ward

Ward_Daryle4.jpgChicago enjoyed beautiful weather the last few weeks. Even though fall weather brings exciting baseball, we are still hanging on to the final days of the warm season. I asked Daryle Ward to reflect on the highlights of summer as we approach Labor Day weekend.

Vine Line-Online: What’s best on the grill?

DW: I like barbecued chicken or steak. They are about equal to me.

VL: You’re chasing after the ice cream man? What do you order when you catch up?

DW: It’s been so long since I’ve done that. I like the sundae cone, the Drumstick.

VL: You’re at the beach. What are you doing?

DW: Probably throwing around a football. I don’t play football that much, but at the beach, it’s fun. Once in a while I’ll play volleyball.

VL: What’s the perfect temperature to play baseball in?

DW: 79 degrees. Warm, but just not too hot where it feels like you might pass out.

VL: You’re parched on a scorching summer day. What is the most refreshing beverage?

DW: Definitely an ice-cold glass of lemonade.

VL: Describe your ideal off day.

DW: I love to go to Dave & Buster’s. I can eat, play video games all day and have a cocktail if I want. I try to win a lot of tickets so I can get a prize. I play a lot of skee ball.

Not a Chicago lightweight

HOY Diaz.jpgChicago native and WBC lightweight champion boxer David Diaz is on the cover of today’s HOY newspaper wearing a Cubs jersey. He’s been sporting Cubby Blue in Las Vegas this week leading up to his pay-per-view fight tomorrow night with Manny Pacquiao.

Diaz threw out a first pitch at Wrigley Field earlier this month, and it’s great to see him give a shoutout to his hometown team before the “biggest fight of [his] life.”

By the way, the headline reads, “I am going to return with my belt.”

Happy Birthday

Daryle Ward turns 33 today, and Jim Edmonds is 38. The two are batting back-to-back in the batting order today against the White Sox.

I’ll be getting some pre-game interviews at U.S. Cellular Field tomorrow for an upcoming issue of Vine Line, so keep your eyes out for a blog tomorrow afternoon.

Pair of moves

General manager Jim Hendry shuffled the roster a little this evening, recalling left-hander Sean Marshall and activating Daryle Ward from the disabled list. To make room for them, Reed Johnson was placed on the 15-day DL, and Micah Hoffpauir was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Marshall will be making the start tonight against the Orioles, taking Big Z’s spot in the rotation. He was 1-1 with a 3.41 ERA (12 ER/31.2 IP) for Iowa.

Honoring a baseball great

Today, April 15, marks the second Jackie Robinson Day. Following a tradition started last year, players around the league will be wearing the MLB-retired No. 42.

The Cubs’ Derrek Lee, Daryle Ward, and coaches Gerald Perry and Lester Strode will be honoring Robinson. For the Reds, Ken Griffey and Dusty Baker will sport the special jerseys.
